One person was killed Tuesday and three others injured in an explosion in a medical building in Aliso Viejo, California, authorities said. The explosion blew out walls and windows, heavily damaging the first floor corner of the two-story building and hurling debris outside, said Capt. Tony Bommarito, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.Authorities have not found any explosive devices in the area, and Bommarito said there didn't appear to be a gas leak.FBI spokesman Mike Gifford said there was no initial indication of terrorism."We do not know at this time whether this was an intentional detonation of a device or whether it was an accident," said Orange County Sheriff's Department Commander Dave Sawyer, who added that officials are not ruling out anything.Sawyer said it appears the blast was concentrated in a suite on the first floor of the office building. The victim, who was killed, and the three survivors were likely close to the explosion, Sawyer said.He said investigators are interviewing the three survivors. Two survivors had critical injuries "that were consistent with an explosion, but not necessarily consistent with a bomb," said Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The sheriff's department is partnering with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who will assist the investigation, Sawyer said.Bommarito said firefighters responded to a call of an explosion shortly after 1 p.m. local time. About 10 engines and 70 firefighters were dispatched. There is a daycare and preschool nearby, but Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy said no children were injured and all are accounted for.Aliso Viejo is about 7 miles northeast of Laguna Beach. 1799

OLATHE, Kan. — Court documents released Monday say a Johnson County, Kansas mom was nearly successful in killing at least two of her children last month.Therese Roever faces three counts of attempted capital murder for allegedly drugging her three children on February 19.It wasn’t until her ex-husband arrived to pick up the kids that anyone knew something was wrong.Court documents indicate the ex-husband tried to get into the house for more than an hour but Roever did not open the door or answer the phone. When Roever finally let the ex-husband inside, he found his ex-wife “drugged and groggy.”First responders arrived to find the couple’s 7-year-old daughter on a bed not responding. Their 5-year-old initially got up from the bed but then stumbled to the ground. A third child, 7, was found in the bathroom crying. While the kids were en-route to the hospital, paramedics used Narcan – a drug commonly used to reduce the symptoms of opioid overdose – on two of the kids.Doctors told investigators that had police not arrived when they did, two of the children would have died.Roever remains in the Johnson County Jail on a million bond. She’s scheduled to be back in court for a preliminary hearing on April 20. 1259
OAKLAND, Tenn. – A dog that recently turned 20 years old is believed to be the oldest living golden retriever in the world. The retriever, named August or “Augie,” lives in Oakland, Tennessee, with her owners, Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt. The Hetterscheidts adopted Augie when she was 14 from the Golden Retriever Rescue Southern Nevada, which Jennifer co-founded before retiring and moving to Tennessee. On April 24, the family celebrated Augie’s 20th birthday, a major milestone, because experts say the average golden retriever lives to be about 10 to 12 years old. They went all out for the celebration, giving Augie a special carrot cake and having a banner made to wish her a happy birthday. She was also surrounded by the family’s three other retrievers, whose ages range between 7 and 10.As Augie got older, Jennifer told the Today Show that she did a little research to see what the age was of the oldest golden retriever. She came across the GoldenHeart Golden Retriever Rescue’s website, which said the oldest was believed to be 19 years old. Jennifer then contacted the rescue to share Augie’s story. On June 20, the Maryland-based rescue announced that “Augie is the oldest golden retriever in history!” 1224
ODESSA, Texas (KGSTV) - A man with San Diego ties who survived the Texas shooting rampage Saturday is recounting the moment he drove into the crosshairs.Daniel Munoz, 28, moved from San Diego to Texas a year ago to work in the oil industry. He was in his car on the way to meet a friend for a drink, when he yielded to a car coming off an interstate. He immediately saw what appeared to be a rifle barrel in the hands of a driver and the shooter, Seth Ator.Earlier, the shooting spree had started with a routine traffic stop, when Ator suddenly started shooting at officers. During the ensuing chase in the Odessa/Midland area, he shot at other drivers. One of those drivers was Munoz. After he saw the rifle barrel, he told the Associated Press, "This is my street instincts. When a car is approaching you and you see a gun of any type, just get down. Luckily I got down … sure enough, I hear the shots go off. He let off at least three shots on me."Munoz believes one shot hit the engine, another struck the driver's side window, and a third hit a rear window. Some shattered glass punctured his left shoulder, causing him to bleed heavily. As he made the frenzied drive to a hospital, the shooting rampage continued. The gunman would hijack a mail truck, before ramming police vehicles outside a theater, where police would shoot and kill him. In the end, Ator would kill seven and injure 22. As for Munoz, he says he's physically okay but shaken."I'm just trying to turn the corner and I got shot. I'm getting shot at? What's the world coming to? For real? I'm just minding my own business," he told the Associated Press.Officials have identified another man, 62-year-old San Diegan, Marco Corral, as among the injured. 1731
