In proximity, the United States and Canada couldn’t be closer.  But when it comes to gun control, the two countries couldn’t be further apart. “A majority of the people do not feel the need to have a gun because we’re quite safe,” says Debbie Thorburn, a Windsor, Ontario resident.In Canada, they talk about guns differently because they look at guns differently.“You have the Second Amendment,” said Brian Green, a manager at General Guns in Windsor. “We don’t.”Detroit, Michigan saw 302 homicides in 2016, with most involving a firearm. Across the river in Windsor, during the same time, there were only three. “I would think that most Canadians are squeamish around firearms and don’t want any part of it,” said Al Frederick, Windsor’s police chief. “The difference, I think in my view, is the accessibility to firearms,” he said. “We don’t have a culture of people that are eager to carry or seek out to carry a firearm.”In Canada, unlike the U.S., it’s a crime for the average citizen to even walk around with a gun.  But that’s far from the only thing separating the two countries.A first-time gun buyer in the United States can walk into a store and leave with a gun the same day; in Canada, it can take months.The U.S. still allows for some gun purchases without a background check. That’s not the case in Canada, where they’re mandatory for any gun license. “Your file is given to an officer and it’s their job to go through it and prove that you are able to have a license,” said Brian Green of General Guns.While there’s often a push to expand gun rights in the U.S., in Canada there are few leading that fight. As one Canadian told The Now this week, “Guns are a right where you live. That is when the FDA will hold a hearing on Pfizer's vaccine. Moderna's vaccine will get a hearing on December 17. The hearings are being conducted by the “Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee,” and they could give approval within 72 hours of the first hearing taking place. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER FDA APPROVAL After FDA gives the go ahead, the CDC will finalize who should get it first. The good news is that the CDC have already released who they think should be first in line. Earlier this week, an advisory committee to the CDC recommended health care workers and those in nursing homes receive access almost immediately. Ultimately though, governors will serve as "air traffic controllers" directing which specific facility has access to the first doses of vaccines. If the current timeline holds, those orders could start going out on December 11 or December 12. AVERAGE AMERICANS TIMELINE AND POTENTIAL ISSUES If you are not deemed a high priority, it will still likely be months before you are able to get a vaccine. Some analysis point to Februrary, but other analysis point to April or May. Some potential issues for distribution include the temperature the vaccines must be stored at. The Moderna vaccine can stay in traditional refrigerators at around 40 degrees or so but Pfizer's must be stored at -94 degrees, which may be trickier to transport in more rural parts of the country. Another big question mark is will Americans actually want to be the first to take the vaccine? "All the science in the world isn’t going to matter if you can’t people to be immunized against COVID," Dr. John Brownstein of Boston Children's Hospital said. Former Presidents George W. Infectious disease experts say the threat of superbugs is growing. They're bacteria that have evolved so that existing medications no longer work to treat infections.“This is made worse by the overuse and inappropriate use of antibiotics and it has become a crisis here in the United States and around the world,” said Dr. Helen Boucher, Chief of Infectious Disease at Tufts Medical Center.Boucher says antibiotic-resistant bacteria can affect treatment for patients with skin infections or cause urinary tract infections in otherwise healthy women.Superbugs are also well-known for their presence in hospitals, causing serious problems, like pneumonia.That's a big issue amid the pandemic, because hospitalized COVID-19 patients may face getting a secondary infection, putting them at a greater risk of dying.Boucher says the emerging threat of superbugs has gotten to the point where physicians have had to tell some patients their infection can't be treated because there's no effective antibiotic. That could mean a denial for an organ transplant or chemotherapy.“And that is nothing that any of us in the infectious disease business ever, ever want to face,” said Boucher. “And we know that if don't continue to advocate and act and really change this problem, that could get worse.”Boucher is working with the Partnership to Fight Infectious Disease to advocate for change in Congress.She says people should make sure to take any prescribed antibiotics appropriately and talk to their doctor about how much is truly necessary. 1540

It was that a hacker had gotten into her computer, where he could have accessed all sorts of personal information."You don't know who has access and who can use your computer," she said.Fortunately, the security site Krebs on Security says this is just a scam that uses a password stolen from a data breach, possibly the 2012 LinkedIn breach.Wihl didn't send money; she knew the hackers didn't really have anything with which to embarrass her.
