EL CAJON (CNS) - A man was struck and killed by an SUV as he crossed a street in El Cajon, police said today.The man, believed to be 50 to 60 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. Stephen Kirk of the El Cajon Police Department said.The motorist is cooperating with police and investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor, Kirk said. Police said the man was crossing Jamacha Road at the intersection with Granite Hills Drive at 10:15 p.m. Saturday and was struck by a 38-year-old El Cajon woman driving a 2019 Bentley SUV north on Granite.At the time of the collision, the man was walking outside the crosswalk, police said.The crash remains under investigation and Jamacha Road is expected to be closed in both directions between Granite Hills Drive and Washington Avenue until at least 4 a.m.The El Cajon Police Department is asking anyone with information to call 619- 579-3311. 914

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- An El Cajon police officer responding to a traffic-related call was hospitalized Monday morning after being dragged by an SUV and then struck by another vehicle. Police have identified the suspect as 41-year-old David Francis Cepeda Pangilinan. He is a 5'6" Guamanian male with short brown hair and brown eyes. El Cajon police said officers were called to the 100 block of Washington Avenue at around 8:30 a.m. in response to a vehicle blocking the street with the driver “asleep or unresponsive behind the wheel.”Officers arrived to find the driver and a female passenger asleep inside a black 2019 Volkswagen SUV with California license plate 8LCE117.According to El Cajon police: “When officers woke the occupants, the driver provided identification for someone other than himself and officers began to investigate.During this contact, the driver suddenly started the vehicle and began to put it into gear. One of the officers attempted to detain the driver and keep him from fleeing the scene.In doing so, the officer was trapped in the vehicle and dragged for a distance as the driver fled.As the driver fled with the officer still partially inside the vehicle, the officer was struck by another vehicle that was traveling in the roadway.The officer was ejected from the vehicle and sustained significant injuries.”According to police, the injured officer was taken to the hospital and is in critical but stable condition. No other injuries were reported.A neighbor was doing yard work when the incident happened and watched it unfold."I heard my son scream and crying so I turn around and I see officer down. I run to the officer but the other police man came. The guy was out, completely out. Blood was coming out of his nose, his mouth and his head. And his eyes were rolled in the back of his head. The other officer came and put his hand on his head. I start praying for the guy, the next thing we know we see him move. DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three fires burned in rural East County Wednesday afternoon as Cal Fire worked to extinguish the flames. According to Cal Fire, all three of the fires sparked in the community of Dulzura along Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Freezer Road. Video of the blaze shows traffic in the area backed up for several miles after crews closed Highway 94 between Otay Lakes Road and Barrett Lake Road. Around 5:30 p.m., Cal Fire said crews were able to stop the forward rate of spread of all three fires. In total, all three fires burned slightly less than 32 acres. Sky10 was live over the fire. (KGTV) - A husband pleaded guilty Tuesday to trying to poison his wife with a heavy metal at their East County home, court officials said.Race Uto, 27, admitted to three counts of premeditated attempted murder in an El Cajon courtroom, according to San Diego County District Attorney's office spokesperson Tanya Sierra.Prosecutors said Uto gave his wife thallium, a metal found in rat poison and ant killers.RELATED: Warrant reveals troubled marriage in poisoning case10News obtained a search warrant indicating Brigida Uto became mysteriously ill in September 2017. She suffered weakness and hair loss, and was eventually near death, according to the warrant. Friends also indicated in a GoFundMe account she suffered nerve and organ damage.Investigators with the FBI, NCIS and San Diego County HazMat determined Brigida had been poisoned by someone with access to her food and drinks. The warrant also showed that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy, and that the couple had gone through counseling.Race Uto was arrested in March 2018. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Mar. 14.Brigida Uto is a special education teacher in the Mountain Empire School District and the mother of a young boy, according to the GoFundMepage.
