Police departments across the country have been getting more diverse, but there are conversations happening now about further improving diversity in new officer hiring.A new analysis from The Washington Post finds many major police forces are still whiter than the communities they serve.For example, in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, 49% of residents are racial minorities, but 83% of officers are white. And in Philadelphia, 77% of the population is non-white, but 59% of officers are white.University of Maryland criminal justice professor Maria Velez has been researching the impact of this as it relates to crime.“In communities that are predominantly African American, as percentage black goes up in a neighborhood, that's often been thought of as a risk factor for violent crime, but what we find is that in cities where there is, representation in terms of the city council, having a black mayor, having a civilian review board, having prior levels of unrest actually renders that relationship insignificant,” said Velez.She says when cities have more minorities on their police force, that signals accountability and receptiveness. And that filters down to the neighborhood level where it starts to create a sense of trust.“At the end of the day, this is good for both the communities and the police right, because the police need to be able to do the work that they need to do to help with things related to crime, but they can only do that if the community trusts them and is willing to engage with them and work with them,” said Velez.She stresses having more black and Latino officers is a step in the right direction. Police have arrested a dog groomer and her boyfriend for stealing a dog from a salon in Mesa, Arizona last month.Mesa police say Izabella Bujanda, an employee at the Animal Clipper grooming salon where Bebe?was dropped off on Feb. 24, confessed to concealing the 2-year-old Biewen Terrier and handing the dog to her boyfriend as he waited outside the business that Saturday morning.Bujanda's boyfriend, Anthony Barrera, was interviewed Thursday and confessed to his part in the crime.According to the suspects, both 20, they decided to get rid of Bebe after the publicity the case started receiving in the media.On Tuesday, Barrera reportedly drove Bebe to a neighborhood near Power and Thomas roads, where he said she was released near the front yard of a home.Police say Bebe has still not been located, and they are asking residents in the Las Sendas area to help bring Bebe home to her owner.Barrera and Bujanda have both been charged with theft.  984

PARKLAND, Fla. — The brother of the man accused of killing 17 people at a Florida high school in February was arrested on Monday for reportedly trespassing at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where his brother allegedly carried out the attack.According to a Broward Sheriff's Office arrest report, Zachary Cruz, 18, trespassed on school grounds after being warned to keep away from the school. PHOENIX, Ariz. -- A 17-year-old is in custody after reportedly firing a rifle at Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers Thursday morning in Phoenix, and authorities are searching for a second suspect in connection with the incident.According to DPS Captain Jesse Galvez, on Thursday morning, two uniformed troopers were in their vehicle near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street when suspects in a vehicle passed and stopped nearby.The driver honked the horn as the teen got out and started firing an assault rifle, according to DPS.The troopers were able to exit their vehicle and return fire. At that point, the driver reportedly sped off, leaving the teen behind. He was then taken into custody. 706

People living in the Florida Panhandle are scrambling to prepare their homes and businesses for Hurricane Michael.The Category 2 storm is currently in the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s expected to gain strength as it makes landfall Wednesday.Officials ordered an evacuation by noon Tuesday in Pensacola Beach, but for those residents staying, they are spending the day preparing.Randall King lived through Hurricane Opal, a Category 3 storm that hit the coast in 1995. He says his Pensacola home took in about 6 feet of water during that devastating storm. That’s why he doesn’t take warnings lightly.“If you're that close to the cone of uncertainty, always be certain to be prepared,” he says. However, everyone didn’t spend the day preparing for the storm. A group of people were seen on the beach.“It’s not too bad right now,” says Abisai Avelar, a Pensacola resident. “Just for the thrill of it, for the experience. Couple guys wanted to come out.
