At Allan Hancock College’s Fire Academy, Battalion 146 recently went through some intense rescue scenarios.“Help a brother out. Come on,” shouted an instructor.The person responsible for training the future firefighters is academy coordinator Andy Densmore, who has been in this industry for almost four decades and is retiring at the end of this year.“There’s nothing you can do about it,” he said. “We have to make the change.”Changes due to COVID-19.Since the pandemic hit, academy class sizes have been cut by a third, cadets are screened before they enter the facilities, they socially distance themselves once they’re in and wear masks when they’re not in face pieces.“The nice part is we asked these kids for their commitment the first day that we meet them and we said, ‘there’s only one variable in this entire program and it’s you,’” Densmore said.As Densmore’s career comes to a close during this crisis, Camila Schafer, class president of Battalion 146, is just starting hers.“Whether it’s a pandemic, it’s a fire, it’s a surf rescue, we’ll answer that call,” she said.Schafer says instructors can control all aspects of a cadet’s day while on campus but once they leave the academy, however, cadets are committed to an individual responsibility.“On weekends, we’re studying. we’re hitting the books,” she said. “We’re making sure that we’re not out there putting our battalion in jeopardy and possibly getting this virus.”Employment of firefighters is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations across the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistcs.While this fire academy is training with new challenges, Densmore believes smaller class sizes could make cadets like Schafer better prepared than firefighters of the past.“We don’t graduate mediocre,” he said. “Our standards are really, really high. Authorities in India have decided to hold off retrieving the body of the American national feared killed on North Sentinel Island amid concerns about a possible confrontation with the tribe that lives there.John Allen Chau is believed to have been killed by Sentinelese tribespeople after he visited their island home in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago in November, breaching local laws strictly prohibiting contact with the isolated people.Indian police say Chau found local fishermen who agreed to take him near the island, before using a canoe the rest of the way. Days later, the fishermen -- who have since been arrested for facilitating his trip -- say they saw the tribespeople dragging his body around the island."We want to avoid direct confrontation with the tribespeople," Dependra Pathak, director general of police of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, told CNN when asked about the latest efforts to retrieve Chau's body. "We do not want to go there and create an unhappy situation."The decision to avoid a direct confrontation with the isolated tribe came after a series of meetings and reconnaissance trips made by the officials. Anthropologists and tribal experts were also consulted.By Sunday, authorities had mapped out the area with the help of the fishermen and observed several members of the tribe walking around the area where eyewitnesses claim to have seen Chau's body dragged and buried.However, despite ruling out any immediate attempts to land on the island, local police would not categorically rule out retrieving the body at a future date. AURORA, Colo. -- It’s a common work-from-home scam that has duped many, but this time it has a cryptocurrency twist.A couple in Aurora, Colorado who did not wish to be identified, shared their story with Scripps station KMGH in Denver about being tricked into laundering thousands of dollars, in order to keep others from falling for the scam as well. KMGH changed their names and disguised their identities to protect them. "It all fell apart so quickly," said John, who along with Marie, ignored the red flags all around them. "We don't want to go to jail. We laundered money and we stole money from people, that's what it could look like to someone."They thought they had found the perfect job: working from home as “financial agents” for a company called Golden Potatoes. At the time, never meeting their boss in person made sense because the company was headquartered out of state and the website looked legitimate.A Colorado Bureau of Investigation spokesperson told KMGH she sees these schemes often, so does Krista Ferndelli with the Better Business Bureau."The contact information. The three people on the site, they may be actual people but they look very much like stock photos," said Ferndelli.The couple interviewed over the phone and received paperwork detailing the benefits, the salary and the company car. Marie was asked to send a selfie photo of herself holding her ID.John said his boss “Alex” instructed the couple to open up bank accounts. They would then receive deposits from customers who they believe were paying for a shipment of potatoes or olive oil."I felt like it was a prayer answered. Like honestly. This money was real," said John. “This money is legit. This is real cash. This is not a check. Nothing is bouncing. Nothing is being drawn to my attention. I’m going to Wells Fargo. They’re handing me ,000 in cash. They’re not saying anything to me.”They would then convert the money to Bitcoin currency and then send it back to "Alex." John and Marie would also get to keep 5 percent of each check, they were told."We hear a lot about Bitcoin because it's so new. People are uninformed and unaware. It’s hard to trace. It’s kind of the ideal payment method for fraud," Ferndelli said. The couple had processed close to 0,000 when the strangers started calling."One of the customers that was supposed to be paying for potatoes and oil says, 'where's my car?'" said Marie.John and Marie said someone posing as them on Craigslist pretended to sell high ticket items like an ATV or SUV and an interested buyer would pay for it.“The couple thought they had purchased an ATV for ,000 off of Craigslist and that, you know, I had sent them my information to confirm that I’m a real person and to put that money into my account.”The bank froze their accounts and unfortunately, John and Marie had mixed their own money into those accounts, too."We have no money because the bank took all of our money," said Marie.They contacted the FBI and local law enforcement. KMGH reached out to the FBI about John and Marie's case, but they wouldn't comment. KMGH also emailed and called Golden Potatoes, but received no response and were hung up on, respectively."I took the brunt of this. I don't want it to happen to anyone else," said John.Silver Oils and Platinum Oils are both companies linked to Golden Potatoes and have the same address listed for business in Portland. As tensions between law enforcement and the public rise, more cops are saying they need help mentally.For decades, mental health in law enforcement has been stigmatized, says Lieutenant Alexis Zellinger with the Atlantic City Police Department in New Jersey, and she says it has led to suicide being the leading cause of death among officers for the last few years.According to the group Blue H.E.L.P., which has tracked officer suicide since 2015, 2019 was the deadliest year for police in the United States as 228 took their own lives. The organization also reported 172 officer deaths due to suicide in 2018, 168 in 2017, and 143 in 2016.Lt. Zellinger says traumatic incidents on the job can occur several times in one day and are not always related to use of force situations.“I was on a call where we had to perform CPR on an infant,” said Lt. Zellinger. “Going through something like that as a police officer and a woman who has gone through a miscarriage not too far along from that moment; it is something that can be traumatizing."“The climate of the country right now, it’s not great for law enforcement,” added Deputy Chief Bridget Pierce with ACPD.In 2018, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal instituted the Officer Resiliency Program as a way to help offer supports to law enforcement personnel who may need it. The program places at least one officer trained to understand and deal with mental health issues inside each department in the state. Grewal says the program traces back to an encounter he had in 2018 with Pablo Santiago, a deputy with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department in the state.Only a few weeks after the two met and Santiago invited him to a homeless feeding, Grewal says Santiago shot and killed himself in the parking lot outside of his office on the day after Christmas.“He was the picture of community service,” said Grewal. “[He was] vibrant. You never knew anything was affecting him. There is an argument to be made that it’s a line of duty death because it is the trauma and stress of the job.”In Atlantic City, Deputy Chief Pierce and Lt. Zellinger volunteered to become the department’s first two resiliency officers. They started counseling officers within the department only two weeks ago.“In my career [at ACPD]- I’ve been here 24 years- there have been 6 officers who have committed suicide,” said Pierce. “When one of your own takes his own life, you feel partially responsible that you should have seen it coming. One of the officers that we lost years ago was one of my very good friends, who I worked side by side with, rode in the car with, and for a long time that haunted me.”Since the death of George Floyd, Attorney General Grewal says calls to resiliency officers and state hotlines have increased by thousands.“It’s tough.
