SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say a dead Cooper's hawk found in Ramona has tested positive for West Nile Virus.The hawk is the second bird to test positive for the virus in San Diego County in 2019. Two county residents have also tested positive for the virus this year, but officials say both were bitten and contracted the virus in other counties. Across the state, 184 people have tested positive for the virus and five people have died this year.County health officials are now reminding the public to protect themselves from mosquitoes that may be carrying the potentially deadly virus.West Nile virus is mainly a bird disease but can be transmitted to humans via mosquitoes who feed off an infected animal. Symptoms include headache, fever, nausea, fatigue, skin rash or swollen glands.Locals can prevent mosquitoes from breeding by removing any water that is sitting outside of homes or by using mosquito fish to control the bugs in stagnant water sources, like pools, ponds, or fountains. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the U.S. prepares for the possibility of a coronavirus vaccine, San Diego County public health officials detailed what groups will see the vaccine first.San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said the state anticipates receiving 327,000 doses in mid-December, with about 28,000 doses heading to San Diego County.According to the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the phases for vaccine distribution will follow:Phase 1A: Healthcare personnel, nursing home residents, nursing home employeesPhase 1B: People with underlying medical conditionsPhase 2: Teachers, school staff, child care workers, food supply chain workers; Critical workers in industries essential to the function of society; People in and staff working at correctional facilities; All older adults not in Phase 1Phase 3: Children and young adults 30 and younger, critical workers not in Phase 1 or 2Phase 4: Everyone else living in the U.S.Wooten added that the county's first round of vaccines will have to go toward Phase 1A, and that there are well over 28,000 people in the first phase alone."It's not just doctors and nurses, it's other healthcare personnel that might take food to individuals in their room that would have COVID-19 or maintenance or janitors," Wooten said of the Phase 1A group on Wednesday. "So those are at the top of the list, acute healthcare facilities. Again, it is going to be very challenging. We are working out the numbers and working out the process now. But the good news is that the first shipment isn't going to be our last shipment."Wooten said that the second round of vaccine distribution will likely be within three weeks after the first round. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Continuing its success breeding the first southern white rhino through artificial insemination, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomed a second rhino to the mix last week.The unnamed female rhino was born on Nov. 21 just after midnight at the zoo, becoming the 100th southern white rhino born overall at the Safari Park.The rhino's mother, 11-year-old Amani, gave birth to the calf at the park's Nikita Kahn Rescue Center, where she did extremely well during labor and is now bonding with the new calf, the zoo says.RELATED: San Diego Zoo's baby southern white rhino charges into life at the parkThe rhino is the second southern white rhino born via hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination in North America. The calf is up and walking, and nursing frequently, which are all good signs. Not only are we thankful for this healthy calf, but this birth is significant, as it also represents a critical step in our effort to save the northern white rhino from the brink of extinction.”Southern white rhinos are designated as "near threatened" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. There are an estimated 18,000 southern white rhinos left in the wild.San Diego Zoo hopes that the science used to successfully breed the southern white rhino lead to the genetic recovery of the subspecies northern white rhino, of which only two remain on the planet and are females. Once the science is perfected, the zoo says southern white rhinos could serve as surrogates for embryos of their northern counterparts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dangerous rescues are on the rise on the cliffs along San Diego's coastline.Broken bones, medical emergencies, even death: these are just some of the calls to San Diego Lifeguards, tasked with performing these rescues. According to a recent Team10 investigation, those calls to lifeguards have doubled in the past four years."We're out here assisting people on a weekly basis," lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero said. "It's pretty dangerous; people can fall, people have fallen, people have died, people have suffered traumatic injuries."Romero said lifeguards average 70 to 100 rescues a year at Sunset Cliffs and Black's Beach. The less-serious calls have been anything from people getting stuck, to medical emergencies, to hikers simply getting lost. The more serious calls involved traumatic injuries and death.RELATED: Cliff, air rescues on the rise in San Diego CountyAccording to data 10News requested from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego Lifeguards, there have been 74 cliff rescue calls from June 2017 to the beginning of October 2018. Black's Beach had 11 serious injury calls.Romero said the uptick could be explained as the secret spots no longer being secret."We've seen population growth, tourism growth, social media growth...all affect just more people coming down," Romero said.Lifeguards are on duty 24/7 to help in these situations. Cliff rescues have become so common, rope skills are now as basic for them as work in the water.Carrying 40 to 50 pounds of gear each, typically seven lifeguards and three trucks respond to most cliff rescues. Romero said while each rescue is different, most take 45 minutes to an hour to complete.Resources are pulled from other areas along the beach. If rescue crews need to use a helicopter, the cost is more than ,000 an hour to operate.The rescues are paid for by taxpayers, provided by the city, no matter if the patient is a victim of an accident or reckless."We just ask people to bring their cell phones, pay attention to where they're going, have sturdy footwear," Romero said. 2193
