KABUL, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese hostages who have been held by Afghan militants for over three months were released Saturday, the Chinese embassy said here Sunday.Yin Juming, the embassy charge d'affaires, told Xinhua that the two Chinese nationals working with the China Railway 14 Bureau were set free by the militants in western Afghanistan's Faryab province.Zhang Fengqiang, an engineer, and Wu Yulin, a worker, were seized by militants who claimed to be Taliban insurgents on Jan. 16 enroute from the working site to the residence camp in the province, said the Chinese diplomat.The duo were awaiting the journey back to China to reunite with their families, he said.

BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday called for more efforts to cut emissions and conserve energy to meet the country's target set by the 11th Five-Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.The task of fulfilling the goal was still tough , Wen said at a State Council meeting, adding that this year would be particularly difficult as the first quarter had already seen rising energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) in the major industrial sectors.In the first three months, six major industries, including steel, power and non-ferrous, saw a 3.2 percent growth in energy consumption per unit of GDP, Wen said.  Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (C) addresses a State Council meeting of conserving energy and cutting emissions in Beijing, China, on May 5, 2010. BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhua) -- China is disappointed the European Union (EU) has decided to launch an anti-subsidy investigation into imported Chinese coated paper, Ministry of Commerce (MOC) spokesman Yao Jian said Saturday."China will closely follow this issue and reserves its right to take necessary measures in accordance with WTO rules," Yao said.He said the coated paper probe is the EU's first anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese products.The EU launched an anti-dumping investigation on Chinese coated paper two months ago, he said.Increased trade protectionism is a major threat to the world economy recovery, Yao said."To create a win-win situation, China and the EU should settle trade disputes cooperatively," he added.MOC data shows the EU initiated seven anti-dumping investigations against China in 2009.The EU is China's largest trade partner, with bilateral trade volume exceeding 360 billion U.S. dollars last year.

BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- China hopes that the deal Iran struck with Brazil and Turkey will help advance the process of resolving the Iran nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Tuesday.Yang made the comments in telepone conversations with his Turkish and Brazilian counterparts, Ahmet Davutoglu and Celso Amorim.Yang said that China has always sticked to the "dual-track" strategy in seeking a solution to the Iran nuclear issue and China appreciates the mediation efforts made by Turkey and Brazil.China attaches importance to and welcomes the agreement the two countries signed with Iran on supplying nuclear fuel for the research reactor in Tehran, he added.Davutoglu and Amorim briefed Yang on the efforts Turkey and Brazil have made concerning the Iran nuclear issue.They stressed that the deal the two countries reached with Iran is an important and positive step, which offers a new chance for the international community to peacefully solve the Iran nuclear issue through diplomatic means.Iran signed an accord with Turkey and Brazil in Tehran on Monday under which it will ship most of its low enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for the 20-percent uranium fuel needed for its Tehran reactor.

BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Growth in China's consumer price index (CPI) is likely to see a reverse "V" shape this year and the possibility of a serious inflation is easing, said Ha Jiming, chief economist at the China International Capital Corp. (CICC).Speaking at an investor education activity in Beijing Saturday, Ha expected China's CPI to increase 3.2 percent in May from a year earlier, and said the CPI annual growth rate would even peak at 4 percent in June and July.The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March and the growth for April accelerated to 2.8 percent, according to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics.The pick-up in CPI growth was a result of lower comparison base last year and the risk for a serious inflation in short term was defusing because both the global commodity prices and domestic meat and vegetable prices were falling, he said.In China, food prices accounted for one third of the CPI weight.The CICC has cut its estimate for China's economic growth this year to 9.5 percent from 10.5 percent, he said.Interest rate hikes would be unlikely this year as growth in consumer prices was expected to fall in the second half, he said.
