SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego could become the first local police department to provide a low-cost, late-night daycare facility for officers' kids. The San Diego Police Officers Association (SDPOA) has a new plan to help struggling offers who are trying to make it in San Diego.Kelly Stinnette has two full-time jobs. She's a mother to her toddler, Landon, and she’s a detective with San Diego Police Department's Sex Crimes Unit. At times, she can be on-call for 24-hour periods.“It's a lot of anxiety and stress because you're thinking [that when] somebody's called the police [it] could be the worst day of their life and I need to be there 100% for them but still taking care of my son,” she tells 10News.To complicate matters, her husband is an SDPD SWAT officer.“With his team, they basically need to be able to respond at anytime, anywhere in the City of San Diego,” says Det. Stinnette.Parenting gets difficult when both she and her husband have to rush to work but need someone to watch Landon. “We basically have to have friends or family on backup,” she adds.“There's obviously an overwhelming need,” says Det. Jack Schaeffer with the San Diego Police Officers Association. He’s referring to the need for a special daycare for officers’ kids. He’s now working to make it a reality.“Our goal is to basically cut the cost in half or better for our members while staying open for 20 hours a day,” he tells 10News.According to a report from childcareaware.org, the cost of infant care in California averages more than ,000 a year.Det. Schaeffer adds, “Some of our members are spending around ,000 a month to have their kids watched if they have two or three kids.”The idea is that a low-cost daycare for officers’ kids would attract more applicants in a department that's faced a shortage of officers.“It not only does good things for recruiting, but for our mental wellness,” says Det. Stinnette.Det. Schaeffer's team is building the program from scratch. Initially, it'll only be available to San Diego police officers who are members of the SDPOA. “This is going to be the first big city that I know of that'll have something like this,” adds Det. Schaeffer.A location for the daycare has not been finalized. If all goes as planned, the daycare could be open within a year.The SDPOA already received a generous grant from San Diego’s Cushman Foundation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Rallies were held in six different states in what organizers are calling "The March for Reparations to African people."Crowds gathered at the waterfront in downtown San Diego Saturday afternoon wearing masks with signs in hand.Among them was Wendy Craig, who is part of the UHURU Solidarity Movement, the group that organized the rally. Craig says they’re calling on people to do more acting and less talking. You have to take a material stand of solidarity and turn over the stolen resources."Craig says many people that registered to participate in this event also raised money towards a collective reparations goal. She says there’s been an increase in involvement this year, which she believes is attributed to current events. "Four years ago when we organized a march for reparations we did not have a lot of success. But that was shifted through the George Floyd protests, and Breonna Taylor. That shift has brought a lot of unity to what we’re doing," Craig said.Collectively, this organization had set a goal of raising ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego gun owners could soon face more requirements when it comes to storing their firearms.City Attorney Mara Elliott announced the proposal Tuesday. It would require gun owners to store their guns in a Department of Justice approved lockbox or trigger lock, unless the owner or authorized user is carrying the firearm or it is in their immediate control. Elliott said state law requires locks to accompany guns sold in California but does not always require their use. "Safe storage laws work when it comes to protecting our kids," said Elliott, who made the announcement next to a playground at Mission Bay. Elliott pointed to the 2013 death of 10-year-old Eric Klyaz, who was fatally shot when playing with a gun in a friend's garage. "Two families were torn apart that day, but the impact of his death cut deeper than that," Elliott said. Violators would face up to six months in jail and a ,000 fine. Elliott said police wouldn't be doing door-to-door checks, but could cite someone when responding to a different call.Still, Michael Schwartz, who heads the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC, said law is duplicative and that education is the better approach. "This is something that invades someone's choice in their home," he said. "Whether or not you have a child, maybe you're a single woman who lives at home, and now she's taking away a number of choices that a single woman has to be able to defend herself in her own home."The proposed ordinance says it will not substantially burden a person's ability for self-defense at home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ranked seventh in the state, an Oceanside High School wrestler makes daily sacrifices to be an elite athlete. But in a recent tournament, Shane Hansen put sportsmanship above being number one. After four matches, Hansen made it to the finals in the La Costa Canyon tournament. However, the final match was getting away from him. "It was the third period, the last period, I was down 12-3, I believe, we went out of bounds, and he ended up dislocating his shoulder," said Hansen. RELATED: Community helps man devoted to keeping park cleanHansen's opponent was not able to recover in the injury time allotted and was therefore forced to default match, meaning Hansen took first place. "I felt pretty bad because obviously, he was winning that match, and it wasn't my match to win."Hansen tried to forfeit himself from the match but was not allowed. "When he came up to me and was like, I want to trade my medal, I want to trade my medal, I was just kind of taken aback that in the moment, so quickly, he was wanting to do that," said Hansen's coach, Dustin Long. During the award ceremony, Hansen gave his gold medal to his opponent in exchange for the silver medal. Hansen held up two fingers representing second place in the podium photo, a symbolic gesture to his injured opponent.
