SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cockatiels rescued from unsanitary conditions in a Rancho Bernardo apartment are now available for adoption, the San Diego Humane society announced Tuesday. Humane Society Law Enforcement Officers seized more than 80 birds from one unit Jan. 23. They were flying freely through the home, creating an unhealthy situation, shelter officials said.Veterinarians cleared the birds for adoption. The cockatiels will need socialization and time to adjust to their new homes, according to the Humane Society. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California Highway Patrol has identified the man who died after slamming into a tree on the Sea World Drive on-ramp Saturday. CHP says 26-year-old Jacob Eugene Arnell was killed when the Cadillac Escalade he was driving at a high rate of speed overturned and hit a tree. The crash happened around 9 a.m. Saturday on the right shoulder of Sea World Drive. Arnell was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time, it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved. The medical examiner’s toxicology report in pending, CHP says. Arnell was the only one inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. 618

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Chicano history will be celebrated in San Diego this week at one of the city's most historic parks.On April 20, the Logan Heights community will celebrate the 49th annual Chicano Park Day at the famed park underneath the Coronado Bridge. The free festival brings together community members annually for art, education, entertainment, and honoring Chicano culture and the park.This year theme will be "Danzantes, Protectors of Our Traditions and Chicano Park, 500 Years of Anti-Colonial Struggle."Performances are scheduled by a lineup of traditional and cultural dance groups and one of the largest Aztec Indigenous dance performances by Danza Azteca Calpulli Mexihca. In addition to dancing, kids art workshops, speakers, and more than 325 classic lowrider cars and bikes will be on display. Attendees can also visit various arts and crafts, and informational booths throughout the colorful park.And, of course, there's the food, which will be sprinkled throughout the park at various booths.The event comes a couple days before the official establishment of Chicano Park on April 22, 1970, by activists. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Councilman Scott Sherman's newly announced candidacy will alter the race to become San Diego's next mayor.Sherman, termed out from City Council, is the first household Republican to run to lead America's eighth largest city. Sherman announced he would run just before the Dec. 6 deadline to file for the March 2020 primary. Current Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, is termed out. In an interview, Sherman said he did not want the mayoral debates to be dominated by two big-name Democrats: State Assemblyman Todd Gloria and City Council President Pro-Tem Barbara Bry. "There's a very good chance that he will get in the runoff."The top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, will move on to the November primary. In September, a 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll showed Gloria leading Bry by a two-to-one margin, with 31 percent of voters supporting Gloria, and 15 percent supporting Bry.
