SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former investigator with the Department of Homeland Security was sentenced today to more than a decade in federal prison for taking drug money seized during his work as a federal agent, then laundering the funds that he used for personal expenses.Tyrone Cedric Duren, 50, who pleaded guilty to nearly 20 federal counts last year, was sentenced to 130 months in custody, plus three years of supervised release.U.S. District Judge John Houston also ordered the forfeiture of Duren's Bonsall home, a 5,000 money judgment and restitution to the Internal Revenue Service, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Duren was assigned to a bulk cash smuggling task force and, as part of his work, would investigate suspected drug traffickers transporting cash.After seizing money during those investigations, he would deliberately fail to report the cash and used the money for his and his families' own personal expenditures, including real estate and international travel, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Over the course of several years, Duren also placed GPS trackers on vehicles used to move drug proceeds, prosecutors said.Prosecutors cited an example from 2014, in which Duren tracked a vehicle heading toward Mexico, which was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint.After Duren seized cash found hidden in laundry detergent boxes in the vehicle, he took more than 0,000 for himself, which was later deposited into business and personal accounts to conceal those thefts,'' the U.S. Attorney's Office said.In addition, prosecutors say he didn't file taxes in 2013 to hide stolen funds and lied ``numerous times'' to investigating agents. 1675

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of robbing a Cherokee Point smoke shop at knifepoint, police said.The robbery was reported shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday at MA Smoke Shop, 3543 University Ave., San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The suspect, later identified as Mario Chavez, walked into the smoke shop and selected several items from a display, the officer said.He then allegedly walked up to the clerk holding a knife and demanded a lighter, Heims said. The clerk contacted police while the suspect was standing at the counter, then officers arrived a short time later and arrested Chavez, who was still in the store.Chavez was booked into San Diego Central Jail around 3:40 a.m. Friday on suspicion of robbery, according to jail records. 799

SAN DEIGO (KGTV) - A family in City Heights is going to save about 90% on their electric bill thanks to the non-profit GRID Alternatives. The organization installed free solar on their roof for Mother's Day. Erika Rodriguez is a single mother of three and she told 10News she would not have been able to afford solar without the program. She'll own the panels as long as she lives at the house. If she moves, the panel stays. The construction team doing the work is a team of all women volunteers. GRID Alternatives is also hoping to get more women into solar-related jobs. Currently, women only make up 27% of solar jobs.  661

SAN DIEGO — (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Fairgrounds is weighing its legal options after the KAABOO Music announced that it would move to Petco Park in 2020, the venue's CEO told 10News.Fairgrounds chief executive Tim Fennell declined a formal interview, but pointed to language in the Fairgrounds' contract with KAABOO that blocks the festival from holding a similar event within a 75-mile radius the year it cancels the contract. SAN DIEGO — The County Office of Education is taking its annual job fair entirely online, with already more than 800 registered job seekers. The job fair, which is regularly held at Liberty Station, will instead feature virtual lobbies and virtual tables. Dr. Sheiveh Jones, who organized the fair for the office of education, said more than 25 school districts and charter schools are participating. She said there may not be as many openings as in prior years because of temporary budget uncertainty, but that could change by the end of the summer. "When a position does open, the district may invite you to apply or they may just recognize your name when they look at the applications," she said. Jones said the districts are hiring for both academic and non-academic positions. She added there is always demand for bilingual, special education, STEM and substitute teachers. She said her best advice is to check out the posted jobs online ahead of time at Edjoin, so jobseekers can be better prepared to meet hiring managers, or even apply before the fair.
