College football player Ryan Arnold dreams of playing in the NFL. While chasing his goal, he’s trying to avoid CTE, a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated hits to the head. “When it comes to concussions, I’ve taken some shots,” the linebacker said. “Your body gets hot. Everything pretty much shuts down. Your brain is rattled.” Concussion-related injuries are getting more attention lately. The CDC estimates about 3.8 million sport-related concussions happen each year, with almost half going unreported. “When you have a concussion, there’s many levels to the problem,” said Tony Megna, DACM, MSOM.Megna played football at the University of Wisconsin, but he had his college career derailed by concussions. He is now using traditional Chinese medicine in an attempt to help manage concussion-related injuries of other athletes like Arnold. “We can use acupuncture and Chinese medicine to help facilitate the restoration of the brain, not just to mask some of these pains,” Megna said. But does this kind of old-school, eastern medicine really work?For that answer, we went to UCHealth and spoke with a modern western doctor.“We have an extensive toolbox that we use for headache, but we need more tools,” said Dr. Lauren Grossman, MD, MS.Grossman is the medical director of UCHealth’s integrative medicine center and says traditional Chinese medicine is another way to combat concussion problems. “It’s not like writing a prescription for a pill that either works or doesn’t in one dose,” she said. “In traditional Chinese medicine, we usually recommend the patient have four to six treatments before they decide whether it’s been successful or not.” Back at Megna’s Integrated Heights Wellness and Healing Center, he is practicing acupuncture on Arnold. These athletes swear by the treatment, saying it’s also a lot better than the alternatives. “Is it the answer to everything?” Arnold asked about traditional Chinese medicine. “You don’t know until you try it. Among them is Walter S. Arnold in Chicago. “I am a sculptor and a stone carver. Traditionally, those were two separate professions,” said Arnold. “The sculptor was the creative person who made the model, like a composer for music, and the stone carver was like the musicians in an orchestra.”Arnold believes art is one of the things that define humanity. “You know, building on the old traditions and learning from them are all a part of it. 100, 150 years ago there were thousands of carvers in this country,” said Arnold. “There might be a few dozen now.”People have kind of lost the eye for it, according to Arnold.“People no longer grew up around it,” said Arnold. “Walk around an old city like Chicago and look up and you'll see carving everywhere.”Arnold has been carving all his life.“I think I first took a chisel to a piece of stone when I was about 12 and ended up going to Italy when I was about 20 near the quarries near Carrara where the marble is quarried.”Arnold says gargoyles in particular appeal to him.“They appeal to my imagination, sort of on the edge between what is recognizable and real and natural and human, and what is imaginary and supernatural,” he said. Throughout history, Arnold says our earliest records of civilization come to us through carving and it has been a part of civilizations all over the world throughout history as a way to communicate. “The painter Delacroix, a French painter in the 1800s, once said that the last few brush strokes that will finish a painting and kill it. So, in a way for me, the last few chisel strokes are when I pass it on from me and then it becomes your responsibility to see which piece appeals to you or speaks to you or is important to you.”Arnold says his message is to look at the world with a sense of wonderment, to see things that you don’t expect “To be delighted and surprised, to see the world in three dimensions.” 2089

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Clinton Township man has been charged with operating as a health professional without a license after a search indicated he was running a dental practice in the basement of his home.Police say they served a search warrant on an unnamed suspect at his home. In the basement, they a dentist chair, an X-ray machine, dentistry utensils and molds for teeth among other items.Reports allege that receipts for equipment and supplies were found outside the home as well.According to police, the suspect stated he was seeing one to two patients in his home per day, using his church as a word-of-mouth referral service.“We are thankful that someone had the courage to come forward and report the defendant for his criminal behavior,” Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith said. “The wanton disregard for the law by the defendant is disturbing.”The suspect faces up to 4 years in prison for the felony. 931
