SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Toni Beery and her husband Jonathon have their hands full trying to get Old Town’s Hungry’s Kitchen and Tap back up to speed.“There’s just not a lot of foot traffic, still, during the week especially,” Toni says. “We’re just trying to take it day by dayThey're trying to bring employees back and working to survive amid social distancing requirements. One new task on their plate is employee temperature checks and monitoring.New technology, however, is doing that for them. It’s called the GoSafe, a stand-alone tablet two San Diego companies developed. Using Qualcomm's chips, San Diego-based OneScreen built a device that takes temperatures and uses facial recognition to allow or deny access to different workplaces and schools.Additionally, the GoSafe can assist health investigators in contact tracing. If someone shows an elevated temperature, it will have a record of who else scanned in around the same time.“It is not only a race against the vaccine, it is a race to go back to normalcy,” said Sanjeet Pandit, Qualcomm’s director of smart cities.San Diego’s Fluid Sound is now working to install the devices at businesses around our region. It recently did so as a test at Hungry’s, and demonstrated how it can reject access for people without masks. The device’s MSRP is ,995.“If you think about the labor cost associated with implementing a health screening process for any business, big or small, it's a significant labor cost,” said Dennis Pappenfus, CEO of Fluid Sound. “This is more of a one-time cost and you've got a pretty good process off to the races."Nationwide, 2,000 of the devices have already sold.In addition to Hungry’s, a spokesman for Fluid Sound says the devices are installed, or could soon be, at places such as Qualcomm headquarters, The Port of San Diego, and the University of San Diego. In a statement from USD, a spokesperson says GoSafe is one device they've considered in their reopening plans."As the University of San Diego prepares for the re-opening of our campus in August, the Return to Work Task Force is looking at a variety of devices and safety procedures to keep our students and employees safe as they return to the office and the classrooms. While GoSafe is one device we have been presented with, it is not the only temperature device we are currently assessing and demoing, no purchases have been made yet. We continue to search for the best technology available to keep our campus community safe and healthy," Lissette Martinez, senior director of media relations, said.A spokeswoman for the Port of San Diego says the agency ordered three of the devices, which will be delivered Tuesday. 2672

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris projected to take the White House, Harris will have to resign her seat in the U.S. Senate. The power to fill that seat would fall to Governor Gavin Newsom, and the political jockeying for his pick is well underway.“This is one of the best jobs in American politics, one of the most prominent jobs in American politics and every California political leader wants it,” said UC San Diego political science chair Thad Kousser.Kousser expects Newsom will want to make history with the diversity of his pick, should he have the opportunity.Others are thinking along the same lines. Groups like Equality California have sent the governor a list of their preferred LGBTQ candidates, which would be a first for California.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez tweeted out her own list Friday of Latino candidates, another potential first for the state.“We are the largest demographic in this state, and growing,” she wrote. “It’s time we have a Latino/a US Senator.”Political analyst Laura Fink says the governor is going to have to balance a lot of competing interests.“First and foremost, what's going to be best for California? And then of course, what's going to be best for Governor Newsom moving forward as he looks toward his political ambitions,” Fink said, referring to the possibility that Newsom could run for president. There have been dozens of names floated as potential picks, including California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra. Both are sons of Mexican immigrants who would be the first Latino senators in California history. But don’t pencil either in just yet, according to Fink.“Kamala Harris is leaving one of only 26 women in the Senate. That's one out of four. Last time I checked, [women] are north of 50 percent of the population. So that is something that will need to come into consideration,” she said.Rep. Karen Bass is another top contender. She’s the head of the Congressional Black Caucus. There’s also State Senator Toni Atkins of San Diego, who could also make history as California’s first openly gay senator.“She's been the first a lot of times,” Fink said. “First lesbian Speaker of the State Assembly. First Madam President Pro Tem of the State Senate. This would be another first for her should she ascend to that seat.”Atkins declined to say if she was interested in the job or being vetted.“Right now, my focus is on the work before us, and the path ahead of us," she said in a statement to ABC 10News.Atikins said she was “focused on the outcome of the election and our state Senate races, looking forward to a Biden/Harris administration, and continuing our work here in California.”The power to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat comes from the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. States have their own laws that shape the process.Five states require Senate vacancies to be filled by a special election. Nine states allow the governor to appoint a replacement, but require a special election shortly after. The remaining 36 states, including California, allow governors to appoint a replacement to serve out the remainder of the term.Newsom’s pick would serve out the remaining two years on Harris’s term, then go up for reelection in 2022 as an incumbent. Incumbency carries significant advantages in name recognition, fundraising and image, said Kousser.“You are getting that news coverage. Somebody is probably playing you on Saturday Night Live for two years, and that elevates you above all the other contenders,” he said. With California a reliably blue state, experts say Newsom’s pick could hold the job for decades. 3685

San Diego (KGTV)- A new affordable housing building with studio- style apartments will be coming soon to East Village. The building will be used to house the homeless. City leaders and developers broke ground on the project this morning. “Every time we get the chance to break ground on another supportive housing opportunity means that we’re going to be able to help dozens of San Diegans who need that supportive services and housing,” says Council Member Chris Ward. The building will have over 70 units for people who have experienced homelessness. There will be at least a dozen more units for those who earn 50% or less of the median average income in San Diego. The 7-story building, which includes parking, will have a glass-encased lobby, community room, laundry facilities, and counseling offices. The project aligns with the mayor’s budget proposal. In the plan, .2 million will be used for homeless programs. City leaders say combating this issue is a priority and San Diegans could see more housing, like The Link building, in the future. “If we can do this one project at a time, we can actually get to the number of units that we need in 2 years to house all of the unsheltered, chronic homeless that we see every day,” says Ward.Developers hope to have the project done by early 2021. 1312

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Coast Guard crew members rescued seven people off the coast of La Jolla from a sinking yacht Friday. The vessel began taking on water Friday morning when the call for help came in. Coast Guard, San Diego Lifeguards, and U.S. Navy members all responded."You have to be pretty Johnny-on-the-spot whenever you're hovering over a boat like that," pilot Treston Taylor said. "Especially lowering and hoisting people up and down."A water pump was also lowered to the sinking ship to help buy crews time."For those people on that vessel, they were very excited. Their adrenaline was pumping," Lyman Dickson, the Coast Guard swimmer lowered to the yacht, said. "It's a very intense situation for them."No injuries were reported during the rescue. 795

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Young adults in the U.S. are moving more frequently than they did in 1960, according to a new report by Zillow. Data from San Diego, however, paints a different picture. According to the site, 33.8 percent of young adults in 1960 lived in their current home for less than two years. In 2017, more than 45 percent of young adults had lived in their current home for less than two years. San Diego, however, bucks the trend. In America’s Finest City, in 2017 the share of young adults who lived in a home less than two years is 50.6 percent, down from 54.4 percent in 1960. The data show that young San Diegans are moving less than in 1960. Among young adults who recently moved in the San Diego area, more than 68 percent moved within the metro, while 9.4 percent moved from a different metro in the state and 22.3 percent moved from outside the state. According to Zillow, changes in workplace norms have contributed to the changes in housing tenures. Zillow also says that, rather than climb the corporate ladder, many young adults move from one role or job to the next. The typical employed Millennial has been with their current employer for 2.8 years, according to Zillow. 1205
