SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has pardoned 13 former prisoners, including three whose immigration status may benefit from the decision. He also commuted the sentences of 21 current inmates on Friday, including several who killed their victims and had been serving life-without-parole sentences. One of those pardoned was deported to Cambodia in 2011 but wants to rejoin her 16-year-old son in the United States. Two others are attempting to avoid deportation to Cambodia. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom is defending the state's pace for reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic. He says the economic harm the shutdown inflicted has negative health outcomes, too. Newsom's Monday comments come days after the state entered its broadest phase of reopening yet. Most counties are now cleared to allow the opening of bars, gyms, hotels, day camps, zoos and other attractions. Newsom and state health officials say the percentage of positive tests for the virus and hospitalizations are key metrics that have remained stable. While no votes were changed, states are now trying to prepare for what could happen this year.“States are going to need the federal government to step up, because states can’t defend against a nation state as big as Russia,” says Becker.Congress approved 0 million in election security funding for states.
