(AP) -- Health officials have confirmed a case of plague at South Lake Tahoe -- the first in California in five years.El Dorado County officials said Monday the California Department of Public Health notified them of the positive test of a local resident who is under medical care while recovering at home.Plague bacteria are most often transmitted by fleas that have acquired it from infected squirrels, chipmunks and other wild rodents.Health officials believe the South Tahoe resident may have been bitten by an infected flea while walking a dog along the Truckee River corridor or in the Tahoe Keys area on Tahoe's south shore. 664

(KGTV) - A beloved monitor lizard that slinked away from an East County pet store has been found."Bubbles," a six-year-old black-throated monitor lizard, disappeared from Mike's Pets in Spring Valley on Sunday, according to the store's owner Mike Estevez.Security camera footage inside the store captured Bubbles slip away out a back door and the cage propped against the open entrance.RELATED: Beloved lizard missing from Spring Valley pet storeEstevez told 10News that Bubbles was found Thursday by a volunteer searcher from Los Angeles. (AP) — California firefighters are battling destructive new wildfires north of San Francisco as strong winds fan flames in the already badly scorched state.The fires erupted Sunday in the famed Napa-Sonoma wine region north of San Francisco and in far Northern California's Shasta County, forcing hasty neighborhood evacuations.The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the flames in wine country engulfed a winery, an inn and multiple homes.A hospital suspended care and transferred patients elsewhere and residents of a senior citizens home were evacuated.
