It's not the best idea to take your pet out on the Fourth, but if you do, always use a leash. Once the fireworks begin, bring your pets inside, pull drapes to keep bright lights out, and turn on "white noise" to help dampen the sound. While classical music has been clinically shown to be calming, you can also find playlists or CDs arranged specially to help keep pets more relaxed.If your pet escapes, begin looking for them right away. Contact all area shelters as soon as they're open, and post information in community forums and groups online immediately. Remember that a frightened pet can travel pretty far or be picked up by someone out of the area, so cover nearby areas as well. Cats tend to hide when lost or frightened, so post flyers in your neighborhood and ask neighbors to check sheds, garages, and other possible hiding places.Keep looking. Pets can be found weeks and months after they're lost and are usually reunited because of a microchip.Remember - fireworks aren't the only hazard. While parties may not be as common this year because of social distancing, even small family gatherings can be troublesome. The first day of October might seem like an odd time to talk about summer camp, but one business has found a way to keep its operation running overtime during the COVID-19 pandemic.Camp Sea Gull is located on a remote part of the North Carolina shore. Typically, it accommodates thousands of campers a year. But once COVID-19 hit, that changed and put the camp in a precarious position along with so many other businesses.“It was really difficult,” said camp director Allison Simmons.Simmons said the camp was able to open this summer but only with a fraction of its normal participants. So, to try to attract more people, she had the idea of opening the bunks to families who wanted a change of scenery as they work or learn from home.“To me, this is giving a lot of our parents and students some hope in breaking up the monotony of whenever their school started,” said Simmons.The reservations allow families to stay at Camp Sea Gull for up to seven days, and Simmons, along with other administrators, came up with five different activity programs for families.The camp installed high-speed WiFi throughout its buildings so parents and their kids could access it during working hours, while it worked to offer activities afterward.A normal day might include opportunities to fish, sail, canoe, and play games from 3 p.m. to sundown.“[Before coming to camp] my kids were all sitting in their rooms by themselves for 6 or 8 hours a day in front of a screen, and that’s just not normal for kids,” said Stan Coerr.Coerr says he has been coming to Camp Sea Gull for 40 years--first as a camper, then as a counselor, and now as a dad who wants to plan a getaway with his three sons ages 20, 16, and 14.“I told my boys [the pandemic] won’t be the worst thing you go through but it will probably be the weirdest,” said Coerr. “And as much as I can get them out and doing things as a family, which is kind of rare these days, I will definitely take that opportunity.”Coerr says the four of them stay in the same bunk and have each claimed a portion of it for their work. The FDA said on Wednesday that some vials of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine, which began being administered to health care workers earlier this week, are overfilled with doses. These doses, the FDA says, can be used for additional vaccinations, which will help expand the supply.Each vial of the Pfizer vaccine contains five doses. But after the vaccine is thawed and administered, those administering the vaccine discovered it is possible to get a sixth, or even seventh dose from the vaccine.This discovery could potentially allow more health care workers to become vaccinated, extending the supply of the vaccine.“However, since the vials are preservative free, it is critical to note that any further remaining product that does not constitute a full dose should not be pooled from multiple vials to create one,” the FDA said.A Pfizer spokesperson said that each dose of the vaccine must contain .3 mL of the vaccine. The daughter of a hiker who was missing in Zion National Park for nearly two weeks has told CNN that her mother injured her head and became disoriented during the hike.Holly Courtier, 38, was found Sunday after having not been seen since she was dropped off by shuttle on Oct. 6. Courtier's daughter, Kailey Chambers, pleaded with volunteers to help find her mother during the disappearance, saying Courtier was an experienced hiker who would not have gone missing as she did without a reason.In text messages with the cable network, Chambers gave an explanation for what happened to her mother during the two weeks she was missing."She injured her head on a tree," Chambers texted. "She was very disoriented as a result and thankfully ended up near a water source -- a river bed. She thought her best chance of survival was to stay next to a water source."In the texts, Chambers says her mother went without food the entire time she was missing."She was too weak and disoriented (to seek help)," she said. "She was unable to take more than a step or two without collapsing. This prevented her from being able to seek out help.
