SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego plans to close Thursday as the county prepares for a storm. According to a news release, the theme park made the decision due to heavy rain and strong winds that could sweep through San Diego. The park plans to re-open Friday, November 30. Showers are expected to develop Wednesday night, becoming widespread and heavier by Thursday. Rainfall totals are expected to average between .50” to 1.50” for the coast and valleys with 2” to 4” in the mountains and .50” in the deserts. Strong winds will also accompany the storm. A wind advisory is in effect for the coast and valleys Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and for the mountains and deserts from 6 a.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Board of Supervisors announced 11 legally enforceable health orders to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.The new health orders included:All public or private “gatherings,” defined as any event or convening that brings together 50 or more people in a single room or single space at the same time, such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, theater, church, casino, large conference room, meeting hall, cafeteria, or any other theater, church, casino, large conference room, meeting hall, cafeteria, or any other indoor or outdoor space, are prohibited. All non-essential gatherings of any size are strongly discouraged;All bars, adult entertainment establishments, and other business establishments that serve alcohol and do not serve food, shall close;All restaurants and other business establishments that serve food shall close all on-site dining. All food served shall be by delivery, or through pick-up or drive thru. Social distancing shall be required for persons picking up food on site.All businesses shall enact social distancing, increased sanitation standards, and shall make every effort to use telecommuting for its workforce. All businesses shall suspend any policy or procedure requiring doctor verification for sick or other leave approval;All public or private schools, colleges, and universities shall not hold classes or other school activities where students gather on the school campus. Parents of school-aged minor children shall take steps to ensure said children are not participating in activities prohibited by the Order and that social distancing requirements are practiced;A strong recommendation is made that all persons who are 65 years old or older, have a chronic underlying condition, or have a compromised immune system self-quarantine themselves at home;“Non-essential personnel,” defined as employees, contractors, or members of the public who do not perform treatment, maintenance, support, or administrative tasks deemed essential, are prohibited from entry into any hospital or long-term care facility. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released details Friday about the controversial arrest of a man and woman in Chicano Park involving use of force. Georgina Mercado, 35, interfered with a traffic stop being conducted Thursday, police said. Her three children, ages eight, seven, and four, were with her at the time. 22-year-old Eddie Alvarez arrived on scene with another woman who said they would take custody of the three children, according to SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi. Alvarez wore a bandana over his face and refused to identify himself, police said. Officers “could not release the children to the custody of Alvarez without knowing who he was,” said police. “This contact escalated to the point that officers arrested Alvarez for interfering,” Takeuchi wrote in a news release. Police said Alvarez refused to put his hands behind his back and struggled with officers. “Officers used strikes while they forcefully moved his arms behind his back,” police said. Alvarez was handcuffed and taken to jail. “Anytime force is used, we take it extremely seriously. We have initiated an internal investigation into the force that was used last night,” Takeuchi said. Hours after the arrest, dozens of people gathered outside the San Diego Central Jail downtown to demand Alvarez’ release. The group said Alvarez had been recording the arrest of Mercado, who they described as a community activist. One demonstrator said, “While he (Alvarez) was filming police, they came out and told him to stop recording. He said, ‘No, I don’t feel safe, I’m going to keep recording, especially with my girlfriend right here with the kids,’ and they didn’t like that … The cops ended up jumping him and rushed him to the ground and started punching him in the ribs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting Sunday night and going until May 30, construction crews will close either northbound or southbound lanes of I-5 overnight to begin construction of the Mid-Coast Trolley.Drivers will see heavy equipment and machinery on the freeway, and residents can expect to hear loud construction noise during the closures.The project will start with a large support column for the trolley bridge in the freeway center divider.The trolley is being built to extend the Blue Line eleven miles north from the Old Town Transit Center to University City, running through Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego and Westfield University Town Center Mall.The Mid-Coast Trolley is expected to start running in fall 2021. 748
