HANGZHOU, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A new regular direct passenger sea route between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan was officially opened Saturday after a ship safely returned from Taiwan.The passenger ship, Coscostar, returned to the Damaiyu Port, Taizhou City of eastern Zhejiang Province Saturday, making it the second port on the mainland that has served the regular direct sea route with Taiwan, said He Jinliang, deputy head of the city's Taiwan affairs office.On June 26, the ship, carrying more than 500 passengers, traveled about 302 km to the Keelung Port of Taiwan, He said.With a tonnage of 26,800, the ship, owned by the China Ocean Shipping Companies Group, could carry about 600 passengers, 256 containers and 150 automobiles.The COSCO Star Passenger Ro-Ro Ship is berthed inside the Dabaiyu Port, prior to its maiden voyage to Keelung of Taiwan, at Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, June 26, 2010.The ship is scheduled to shuttle once a week. It will depart from Damaiyu in Yuhuan County on Saturday night and return the following Friday. The single trip would take eight to nine hours, traveling at various speed.Wang Yihao, deputy head of Yuhuan County, said the standard ticket costs 600 yuan (88.6 U.S.dollars) and the deluxe class ticket costs 1,000 yuan."The prices are nearly half that of airline tickets. PARIS, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The Paris-based Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on Tuesday welcomed China's announcement of increasing the exchange rate flexibility of its currency yuan.The move was helpful not only to China's sustainable growth but also the world economy, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria said."A combination of sustained fiscal expansion, continued structural reform and exchange rate flexibility, should provide a strong contribution from China to the achievement of a strong, sustained, and balanced growth of the world economy," Gurria said in a statement.Richard Herd, an economist heading the OECD's China and Asia Unit, said it was impossible to achieve yuan appreciation over one night."The policy is not a political gesture; the policy is a sound economics-based effort," Herd said in an interview with Xinhua, rebutting reports interpreting the statement as just lip service.China's central bank announced over the weekend it would push forward reform of the yuan exchange rate and ruled out a one-off revaluation.

UNITED NATIONS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A veteran Chinese diplomat and an expert of international law, Xue Hanqin, was elected judge of the International Court of Justice here Tuesday.Xue, a member of the International Law Commission, was elected by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council in separate voting.Xue won all 15 votes in the Security Council on Tuesday morning, Claude Heller, the Mexican UN ambassador who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for June, announced after the 15- nation Council cast the secret ballots.Heller, at the open Council meeting, also read a letter from the president of the General Assembly, Ali Treki, who said that Xue won a majority of votes in the 192-nation UN body.Xue "was elected member of the International Court of Justice," Heller said.The election was conducted under the relevant Security Council resolution to fill the vacancy after Judge Shi Jiuyong, a Chinese, resigned on May 28.She is the only female among the 15 judges of the International Court of Justice, and the third Chinese to serve on the Court.Xue told reporters here that she thanked all those who voted for her and said that she will carry out her duty under the UN Charter and the Statute of the Court.

BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese banks should set up an independent risk management system in line with its strategic expansion plan as part of efforts to ward off financial risks, China's banking regulator said Wednesday.The breakout of the global financial crisis highlighted the necessity of increasing management of differentiated sovereign risks, the China Banking Regulatory Commission said in a guideline published on its website.Just as Chinese banks were expanding throughout the world, the overseas risks they were facing were on the rise, the guideline noted.Sovereign risks refer to ones that banks are exposed to when overseas borrowers or debtors are unable to repay debt because of their countries' economic, political and social changes.Chinese lenders were required to differentiate risks according to the countries involved and make policies on the minimum potential loan loss provisions ranging from 0.5 percent to 50 percent, according to the guideline.The banks must meet the requirements under the guideline by June 1, 2011.
