(KGTV) -- A cluster of ten church-run thrift shops at a Poway shopping center, described as a “Disneyland” for discount hunters, will begin to close early next year.In preparation for redevelopment, the owners of the Carriage Center West Shopping Center near Poway and Carriage roads have informed all the tenants that their leases will expire in 2020.While some of the stores will move to new locations, at least four of the church-run thrifts are in danger of closing permanently.“It would take a miracle to find a place that we could afford to move to,” said Marcia Harrod, who has volunteered for 19 years at St. Bartholomew's Thrift Shop.St. Bart’s has operated a thrift shop for 53 years.Sumner Rollings, the president of the thrift shop, said a committee of volunteers spent 18 months searching for a new location, without luck.“The biggest factor has been the cost per square foot of space,” he said.The shop’s lease will expire in February.Built in 1974, the Carriage Center is considered a “mecca” for thrift store fans because it offers 10 stores within walking distance, along with restaurants and other service businesses.“It’s really sad,” said one customer named Tina who said she shops at the Carriage Center weekly. “I’m retired and this is my Disneyland.”St. Michael’s Thrift Shop is also in danger of closing permanently.“We don’t charge Nordstrom prices so we can’t pay Nordstrom rent either,” said volunteer Ken Baumann.Sales at St. Michael’s keep 1,000 kids in Haiti clothed, he said.St. Bart’s raised ,000 for church services last year, said Rollings.“It’s been an incredible run as far as supporting the outreach of the church, and all good things come to an end,” Rollings said. “Something else will take its place.” 1766

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said on Twitter he received a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding this week's covert visit by North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to Beijing.Trump said Xi told him that his meeting with Kim went "very well" and that "KIM Looks forward to his meeting with me." POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - The city of Poway is applying for a 2 million dollar FEMA grant to take down hazardous trees along Espola and Twin Peaks Roads. The trees are considered a fire hazard on a popular fire evacuation route. Wildfire is a major concern in Poway. Twelve years ago, the Witch Creek Fire destroyed 90 homes. Four years earlier, driven by Santa Ana winds, the Cedar Fire roared through Poway destroying 53 homes.Adrian Burfield drives Twin Peaks every day and says a lot of trees need to come down.Adrian Burfield says, “It’s long overdue. Some of the trees are leaning. I just drive by there and see future problems. So yeah I’m glad to see it happen.”The application deadline is April 18th, and they will know something by the end of this year.If they get approved, the trees will start coming down next Spring. 838

POMONA (CNS) - A 38-year-old man was charged today with the murder of a 9-year-old girl whose body was found partially inside a large duffel bag near an equestrian trail in the Hacienda Heights area.Emiel Lamar Hunt -- who is believed to be the boyfriend of Trinity Love Jones' mother -- was arrested early Saturday in connection with the girl's death. Sheriff's officials said Hunt was found sleeping in his vehicle in a lot near San Diego International Airport. The arrest was assisted by the Port of San Diego Harbor Police. Hunt appeared briefly in a Pomona courtroom Tuesday, but his arraignment was delayed until April 16. He remains jailed in lieu of million bail.The criminal complaint alleges that Hunt has a 2005 conviction for child abuse from San Diego County. He could face up to 50 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.Sheriff's officials said earlier that two "persons of interest'' had been detained for questioning in the case, but only Hunt was charged Tuesday.Sheriff's officials said they were not disclosing any additional information about the second person of interest, pending further investigation. The victim's relatives told reporters the girl's mother was the second person beingquestioned, but sheriff's officials would not confirm those reports, and there is no record of her being arrested.County workers clearing some brush in the area found the girl's body found about 10 a.m. March 5. The girl was partially inside a black roll-away- type duffel bag, with her head and upper body protruding from the partially zipped bag left at the bottom of an embankment close to Colima Road and the 3400 block of Hacienda Boulevard, near the His Lai Buddhist Temple, authorities said.The coroner's office ruled her death a homicide, but officials have not said how the girl died.Sheriff's detectives initially asked for the public's help in identifying the girl, releasing a composite sketch of the child and photos of the clothing she was wearing. Family members who created a memorial of candles, flowers, balloons, stuffed animals and photos near where the girl's body was found eventually confirmed her identity."Words can't explain what I'm feeling right now,'' Anthony Jones, Trinity's father, said at the memorial site. ``I just want answers. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A top official says federal militarized officers will remain in Portland, Oregon, until attacks on the U.S. courthouse cease. The mayors of six U.S. cities are appealing to Congress to make it illegal for the U.S. government to deploy militarized agents to cities that don’t want them. The mayors of Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Kansas City, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Washington wrote to leaders of the U.S. House and Senate pushing for limits on agent deployments. Early Monday, U.S. agents repeatedly fired what appeared to be tear gas, flash bangs and pepper balls at protesters.Portland Police also reported that Molotov cocktails and firearms have been confiscated near the courthouse.
