New spikes in COVID-19 cases have reinforced the importance of basic disinfecting and cleaning our homes to stop the novel coronavirus spread.But how do we know that the cleaners we have are effective in killing COVID-19 and other viruses?"One of the things that's important to know: Is there is a lot of good evidence that the coronavirus is one of the easiest types to kill?" said Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Patrick Larkin.Yes, he said. He believes most household cleaners will destroy the virus.He said the best chemicals to use for disinfecting are, bleach, ammonia, and alcohol. However, he does warn that precautions be taken with alcohol concentrations."For example with isopropyl alcohol, you need at least a 50 percent solution; and ethanol [or ethyl] alcohol, you want at least 60 percent," he said.But, take note -- there also are guidelines for how you should clean, so it can be the most effective."CDC guidelines say you should clean the surface with soap and water first, and then apply your sanitizing or disinfectant solution," said retired Certified Industrial Hygienist Tom Samson. "Leave it on for at least one minute, and then you can rinse it off."Samson said not all household cleaners are the same, and do not have the same contact-surface time that is required. He recommends reading the labels of the cleaner you intend to use.Larkin and Samson said it is easy to make your own cleaners at home. However, be cautious about mixing chemicals, and be aware what you are cleaning with."The chemistry of mixing a chlorine-based cleaner with an ammonia-based cleaner can be deadly to those in the immediate area," said Samson. "The reaction of these two cleaners is to release chlorine products into the surrounding environment, in some cases, enough to cause severe injury or death. NEW YORK (AP) — Keith Raniere, a self-improvement guru whose organization NXIVM attracted millionaires and actresses among its adherents, was sentenced Tuesday to 120 years in prison.The 60-year-old was convicted of charges accusing him of turning some of his followers into sex slaves branded with his initials.The court proceeding in Brooklyn culminates several years of revelations about the organization, which charged people thousands of dollars for self improvement courses.Those people included Hollywood celebrities and others willing to endure humiliation and pledge obedience for Raniere’s vision of how to pursue perfection.Prosecutors said Raniere led what amounted to a criminal enterprise. Co-conspirators helped recruit and groom sexual partners for him.Raniere’s sentencing comes about a month after Clare Bronfman, a wealthy benefactor of his, was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case.The Seagram’s liquor fortune heir was taken into custody to begin her 81-month sentence immediately after her appearance in federal court in Brooklyn on Sept. 30.Bronfman admitted in a guilty plea last year that she committed credit card fraud on behalf of Raniere. 1185

NEW YORK — Free parking, free gym memberships, even free rent for three months — Manhattan rents have hit their lowest levels in nearly a decade.Nicole Beauchamp, a real estate agent with Engel & Volkers, said the current housing market in New York City is unprecedented."I have never seen this amount of landlord concessions, and they have actually increased from the summer," she said. "There is a great amount of opportunity right now to snag a good deal on an apartment in Manhattan."The latest report from realtor Douglass Elliman found that the median price of a Manhattan apartment last month was ,100, down from ,500 last October.The savings are even steeper for smaller apartments."We've seen a 19% decrease in the prices of studios," Beauchamp said.Landlords are hoping to lure renters back to Manhattan after thousands moved out during the peak of the pandemic."The vacancy rate, last month I think was just under 6% and this month, we're over 6%," Beauchamp said.That adds up to 16,000 empty apartments in Manhattan, and the greatest share of those vacant apartments are downtown."I saw some incredible deals down in Tribeca over the summer that are still persisting right now," Beauchamp said.More than 5,000 new leases were signed in Manhattan last month, up 12% after a September slump.Many renters are finding more room across the East River."I think there is stronger demand in Brooklyn than the rest of the city," real estate agent Akil Rossi said.The Elliman report found Brooklyn leases surged in October to the second-highest October total in 12 years. NEW YORK -- Police took a man into custody after a 92-year-old woman was shoved and hit her head in an apparent random attack in Manhattan earlier this month.Rashid Brimmage was arrested Tuesday afternoon. Clinton's "She Persisted in Sports: American Olympians Who Changes the Game" will be published Sept. 22 by the children's imprint Philomel Books. The latest of Clinton's best-selling "She Persisted" picture books will include sections on Wilma Rudolph, Mia Hamm, and Venus and Serena Williams. Also on Monday, Philomel announced that a new series of chapter books will feature 80-page stories on women that Clinton previously honored.
