They paid off ,000 in debt and saved ,000 for the down payment.“It’s actually like adjusting in terms of watching television, and they had like the Disney Channel on, and we had to take turns so I could watch the news,” said Jennifer’s father.According to Hot Pads, it takes 28 years for a San Diego renter to save enough to put down 20 percent on a median-priced home. Moving in with parents can cut that down to 12 years.Relying on relatives may not be an option for many San Diegans.Todd Lane, president and CEO of California Coast Credit Union, says you don’t necessarily need to save as much money if you have a higher income.“Look for a program out there with a mortgage lender that offers you the option for not having to pay for mortgage insurance and making less than 20 percent down payment that’s really the key,” said Lane.Lane also suggests you avoid making big purchases prior to applying for a home loan.“Don’t just go out and borrow for a car loan just before your gonna go out and get an home loan; keep that older car,” Lane recommended.Financial adviser Dennis Brewster said aiming for a condo instead of a home is a great way to get in the home buying game.“Anything to start building the equity helps – instead of paying rent,” said Brewster.Other pro tips include using 401K investments for a down payment, or having relatives co-sign the loan. 1704

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Kensington's historic Ken Cinema, an institution in the San Diego neighborhood for nearly 75 years, is closing its doors for good this March.The theater will shut down after March 22, a spokesperson with owner Landmark Theaters told 10News.According to the spokesperson, "After long consideration and much effort, we regret that we are unable to continue operating the Ken Cinema ... The company recognizes what a cherished asset the Ken has been to the neighboring community. The changing theatrical landscape and challenges to independent exhibition are the major contributing factors."RELATED: Poway bowling alley to close in latest big change to busy corridorSince 1946, Ken Cinemas has operated in Kensington on Adams Avenue, bringing local theater-goers independent and foreign films, and restored classic movies. It was the first theater to specialize in the film genres in San Diego.According to Landmark Theaters, the 300-seat cinema is the last single-screen theater in San Diego.In 1975, Landmark Theaters became the theater's owner. The Ken had already faced closure under the Landmark brand in 2014, leading to outraged fans voicing their concerns on social media. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's been 25 years since President Bill Clinton approved Operation Gatekeeper, the measure focused on the issue of immigrants crossing the border illegally — specifically the San Diego sector.Two key parts of Operation Gatekeeper were surveillance equipment and enforcement infrastructure, like walls and fences. Twenty-five years later, Border Patrol Agent Theron Francisco tells 10News, "Before Gatekeeper this area was in utter chaos, agents were apprehending 1,000 per shift. We had hundred of thousands of apprehensions a year." It's a measure that Francisco says paved the way for Border Patrol today."It's absolutely night and day from where we were back then," Francisco said.Tuesday, those against Operation Gatekeeper held a rally. Former Border Patrol agent Jenn Budd tells 10News, "That was the whole purpose, to push them out here to make it more difficult and dangerous for them to cross. I didn't want to be a part of it but its something I have to admit I was a part of."Budd tells 10News, it's partly why she left Border Patrol, "I left because I felt the policies we were enacting were killing people and what we were representing to the public wasn't the truth." Meantime, Border Patrol agents say it's only helped increase San Diego safety."The days are gone where illegal aliens are running through people's backyards trying to hide from Border Patrol," Francisco added. Budd says, "We need them to work for us, we need them to protect our borders we need them to keep drug smugglers out, but we don't need children dying in their custody and all sorts of things they're doing right now." 1637

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a move to help shed the mounting costs of a real estate deal gone wrong, the City of San Diego says it is stopping lease payments on the sharply criticized 101 Ash Street building.The city sent a letter to Cisterra Development, which brokered the real estate deal, that it will be "suspending further lease payments for the 1010 Ash Street building," starting with the Sept. 1 payment. The letter adds that the city will not be making any lease payments "until these issues are fairly resolved.""The City has lost use of the building due, in part, to direct physical loss and damage to the premises, including widespread and negligent disturbance of asbestos," the city's letter reads.RELATED: Options and possible consultation costs for vacant buildingThe property at 101 Ash St. has sat vacant in downtown San Diego for most of the last four years. As it remains empty and unused, taxpayers are paying a daily bill to the tune of ,000.The city intended to move 1,100 city employees into the building, but officials soon discovered problem after problem to the site's 19 floors. In December 2019, the city finally moved workers in, only to vacate them a month later when the county detected traces of asbestos.The building was purchased by the city in 2016 in an approved lease-to-own agreement valued at million.RELATED: City leaders vote for updates on 101 Ash Street as costs mountLast month, a letter obtained by ABC 10News showed the city was considering proposals for additional services including bare requirements to reoccupy the building, fire/life/safety recommendations, and potentially demolishing and replacing the existing building. Those services were estimated to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.A spokesperson for the city told ABC 10News, "Many documents, including this letter, may not be final. It appears you have documents that are not final and should not be treated as such."In August, City Council leaders voted 5-4 to request monthly updates on the status of the building and costs for several next steps options by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, including putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursuing a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely. The last option could risk litigation and credit damage. 2365
