BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union leaders have agreed to immediately impose travel restrictions on most foreigners entering Europe for at least 30 days to limit the spread of the new coronavirus. With virus cases in Europe numbering over 60,000, nervous national governments have introduced individual border closures and quarantines. The EU sought over three hours of video talks Tuesday to forge a united front against an illness that is also wreaking economic havoc. European Council President Charles Michel said the 27 EU countries agreed to impose border restrictions on tourism and non-essential business “as fast as possible.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said citizens of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the United Kingdom and Norway are exempt. 762

As we head into college football and NFL season, fans across the country will now be able to do something for the first time: legally bet on games. Indiana is the latest state making it a reality on Sunday, and there are more places following suit. Lou’s City Bar in Washington, D.C. is getting ready for a busy weekend as football season gets underway. Manager Mark Helliwell is working on a new way to bring in more customers: legal sports betting.“We’re trying to do everything we can to create interest,” he says. “If we can turn this place into a little Caesar’s Palace on Saturday and Sundays so people don’t have go to Vegas.”He applied for a license that will allow customers to bet on games inside his bar and just posted the permit.“Put it up last night and has to stay up for 30 days before our hearing,” he explains. “Our hearing’s in October.”Legalized sports betting is quickly moving across the country. In addition to D.C., several other states either already have sports betting or it will become legal when new laws take effect over the next several months.“Right now, there are only eight states that haven’t either legalized sports gambling or don’t have a bill to legalize sports gambling,” says attorney George Calhoun. Calhoun is one of the attorneys who helped convince the US Supreme Court last year to allow states other than Nevada to legalize sports betting, which he says will help protect gamblers.“They know they’re doing something that’s legal, they’re gonna get the protection,” Calhoun says. “If they have a problem, they’re gonna have access to the courts and law enforcement and they’re gonna have certainty if they win a bet they’re gonna get paid.”According to the American Gaming Association, in the states that now allow sports betting, gamblers have wagered more than billion since it became legal. 1855

At Dayton Consolidated School in Maine, one student has inspired a big change to the curriculum. Morey Belanger, a 6-year-old kindergartener, is the school's first deaf student. To make her feel welcome, the school embraced the opportunity to teach all the students some sign language.Sign language posters now line the walls of hallways, and students have learned how to sign more than 20 words including colors, letters and words related to school."Morey -- without even knowing it -- has taught us so much," said school Principal Kimberly Sampietro. "She has brought a culture to our building that we didn't have before."The school installed a hearing assistive system and implemented extra teacher training to incorporate sign language into every classroom, including core subjects, music and computer class. Sampietro said many teachers also began using their free time to watch sign language videos and read books on special education. The kindergarten class is also getting some help from Morey."Morey helped all of them to learn the alphabet," Sampietro said. "The kids have just really embraced her. They look up to her, they want her around, and they want to partner with her."Morey's mom, Shannon Belanger, said her family has been blown away by how supportive the school has been."I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed," Belanger said. "I think all the kids feel excited that they know another language and I think they think it's fun."To celebrate the students' hard work, the school invited a real-life princess who knows sign language to come speak to students this week."We wanted to show our students that this isn't something they can only speak with Morey," said Principal Sampietro, who said most students in their rural Maine school have not encountered many people with hearing impairment. "We wanted to show them that signing happens in all kinds of settings."Morey's mom said she loves art and performing. So when Cinderella came to sing to the entire elementary, she helped with the singing and the signing, of course. 2067

Brian Thomas just bought a new washing machine after spending time looking for a good deal."I found it a little stressful," he said. But he found a great deal. That stress he was enduring is happening to other consumers as tariffs have already led to price increases. It’s sticker shock. "It's increased, absolutely — you see 0-0 increase at least in what I looked at,” Thomas said.Appliances in particular have price increases from tariffs. Mexico exported billion worth of appliances just to the United States last year. At that time, the Trump administration hit the country with a 25 percent tariff on all imported goods. While the two countries play economic hardball, it’s the consumer who ends up paying more for everyday items coming from overseas.Metro University Associate Economics Professor Alexandre Padilla said there is debate on how tariffs will impact all. "The people that mostly are hurt or harmed by those tariffs are actually on the lower side of income,” Padilla said.People in favor of the tariffs say they keep jobs in the U.S."Should we penalize 10 million people to save a hundred thousand jobs? That's the question,” Padilla said. While Mexico tariffs are currently not in place, China's are. In May, tariffs increased on 0 billion worth of Chinese goods. 1305

Billionaire Mike Bloomberg has qualified for the next Democratic presidential debate. A new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll published Tuesday shows Bloomberg with 19% support nationally. It's the first time Bloomberg will stand alongside the rivals he has so far avoided by bypassing the early voting states and using his personal fortune to define himself through television ads. The former New York mayor will appear Wednesday in Las Vegas alongside Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg. His campaign says he's “looking forward” to it. The Democratic National Committee recently changed its rules for how a candidate qualifies for the debate, opening the door for Bloomberg. Tom Steyer hopes to qualify.Currently, former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont lead the way in the in the 867
