SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – On a windy and cold November day, there was a feeling of winter in the air in South Jordan, Utah.“Yeah, it’s really windy,” said Mohan Sudabattula with a laugh. “I was not hoping for this weather.”However, with a U-Haul truck full to the brim, you can’t help but feel a sense of warmth.“We collect gently used, durable medical equipment from patients who no longer need them,” Sudabattula said. “We clean them up, refurbish them and get them out to patients all around the world.”Mohan Sudabattula started Project Embrace three years as a college sophomore.“I got a lot of mixed reviews on the idea at first,” he said.He’s still an undergrad and with his heavy course load, he also does some heavy lifting.“My hands are already so raw,” he said as he examined his hands between moving medical equipment.When we caught up with Project Embrace, the group of volunteers was gearing up for a delivery to the Navajo Nation.“We’ve got great wheelchairs, canes and crutches,” volunteer Lexy Nestel said as she glanced over the mountain of donated equipment. “I believe health and wellness should be available to everyone.”Back in March, Project Embrace was about to head to Seattle for a donation when COVID-19 hit hard. They put a pause on the project for a while, but then saw demand skyrocket“With how overwhelmed the hospital systems are, you have people show up who need a walker or wheelchair but then have to wait days, sometimes weeks, in order to get that,” Sudabattula explained.These days, their work includes three rounds of sanitizing even the tiniest of spaces found.“Most people are going to be spending their time scrubbing,” Sudabattula said as he passed out toothbrushes to volunteers to clean in between screws on the medical equipment. “COVID has been awful, but at the same time, it’s really unified the community in wanting to support one another.”Despite all the changes and uncertainty in the country, Sudabattula said their mission remains the same.“You will find us wherever the most pressing need is,” he said.No matter the temperature. 2085

Severe weather brought heavy rain, hail and flash flooding to some parts of Maryland.  In Frederick, flood water was so high Tuesday night it covered the tires on cars. Some residents say Market Street was so flooded it looked like a river. Police sent alerts asking residents not to drive on the roads. Emergency crews rescued six people from three vehicles trapped in floodwater.  Click below to see storm pictures from across the state:Businesses in Frederick were also impacted by the storm. The basement of the YMCA on N. Market Street was completely flooded. SILVER SPRING, Md. -- For Habibah Jackson, the path to a healthier life may look like a personal journey, with only her dog, Rocky, for company.It’s anything but.“They like to say, ‘Oh, you're a walking group.’ We’re so much more than a walking group,” she said. “We like to say we're a ‘walking movement.’”Jackson helps lead neighborhood walks for GirlTrek, a nonprofit group of nearly 800,000 African American women taking one step at a time, together.The pandemic changed it a bit. So, to unite all of the now-solo walkers across the country, GirlTrek’s Ebony Andrews said the group launched a podcast, called Black History Bootcamp, focusing on African American women’s history.“Our focus is to help save the lives of Black women by inspiring them to take charge of their self-care, to own their joy, to claim what's their best lives,” Andrews said. “And one of the primary ways we do that is through encouraging community and encouraging walking.”It’s a move that can make a difference. According to the CDC, Black women are at high risk for heart disease and stroke and three times more likely than white women to die in childbirth. Some studies have linked those health effects for African American women to chronic stress, due to experiencing racism.GirlTrek seeks to counteract that.“Walking helps with stress. Walking is also something that requires limited resources. It's putting one foot in front of the other and getting out the front door,” Andrews said. “We have a saying that we say within our office that, ‘When women walk, things change.’”It’s something Jackson sees, too.“If you look at the social change that's happening now, imagine if you weren't in shape enough to walk - how could you actively protest if you're not physically able to keep a stance?” Jackson said. “People are walking for eight hours.
