SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The North County Transit District will temporarily reduce service for its Coaster commuter trains starting Monday until further notice amid a drop in ridership tied to the coronavirus outbreak.Weekday train service will be reduced by about 50%, particularly around the noon hour, when several northbound and southbound trains will be suspended. Likewise, just one evening train in either direction will continue to run, at 5:41 p.m. southbound and 7:13 p.m. northbound.Breeze bus service will continue as scheduled with the exception of school bus trips, which have been halted while schools are closed.RELATED: What's open during California's coronavirus 'stay at home' orderMorning commuters will have more options, but not many. To that end, the marketing agency launched an online survey for Santee residents to give feedback on the city's strengths, weaknesses and challenges. Responses to the survey are anonymous, according to North Star Destination Strategies."We have partnered with more than 250 communities across North American and I can't emphasize enough the importance of insights gleaned from community members," North Star Founder Don McEachern said.Residents can access the survey at the city's website and submit it electronically. The survey is also available in physical form at Santee City Hall. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University officially broke ground Monday on its Mission Valley campus, four days after closing escrow on the 132-acre property which currently houses the San Diego Community Credit Union Stadium."Today marks a milestone moment for San Diego State University and the city of San Diego," said SDSU President Adela de la Torre. "With today's groundbreaking we begin the work to expand SDSU's educational, research, and entrepreneurial missions. SDSU Mission Valley also addresses the realities of the past few months and the need for new streams of revenue to support higher education opportunities for all."As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the groundbreaking event was not open to the general public. Instead, in-person speakers and invited guests were limited to maintain compliance with public health guidelines.The project has been in the works legally since San Diego voters approved Measure G in November 2018, with centerpiece Aztec Stadium scheduled for completion in Fall 2022."We are building a stadium for Aztec football, international and professional soccer, concerts and any other event you can think of," said SDSU Athletic Director John David Wicker. "A world-class 35,000-capacity stadium designed to offer the amenities fans expect today. This is the most important sports and entertainment venue in San Diego since Petco Park opened and will be 365 days a year use for campus and our community."The San Diego City Council voted unanimously to approve a sale agreement for the city-owned Mission Valley stadium property to SDSU for .2 million in late May, bringing more than a year of negotiations nearly to a close.Council President Pro Tempore Barbara Bry was an early supporter, and released a statement expressing her feelings about the project."I believe that investing in the education of future generations is the most impactful thing we can do. But coming up with plans for an alternative public use for this land in a short period of time seemed like it would take a miracle. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society announced Wednesday that it will offer refunds to San Diego residents who overpaid for certain services between July 2018 and last week. Humane Society officials recently determined that some residents paid fees that were higher than the amounts the city of San Diego adopted on July 1, 2018, for local animal services. The organization plans to contact and offer refunds to residents affected by the overcharging that occurred between July 1 last year and Nov. 19 of this year. The organization also offered discounted services to residents via promotions intended to increase animal adoptions and make it easier to adopt a pet. Residents who paid for animal services at discounted prices will not be contacted, according to the Humane Society. 800
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Film Commission Wednesday announced two additional TV series will relocate to the state to take advantage of incentives provided by the Film and Television Tax Credit Program, including one that will shoot in the San Diego area.The Amazon Prime war crime drama "Hunters" and the Disney+ historical drama "The Right Stuff" will move to California for their second seasons of production, commission officials said.Starting in March 2021, all 88 planned filming days for "The Right Stuff" are set to occur in the San Diego area. Such production helps fulfill the tax credit program's goal of bringing jobs and spending to regions beyond the Los Angeles 30-mile studio zone."We are thrilled to welcome ‘The Right Stuff’ to the San Diego region. The California Film & TV Tax Credit Program has been a critical incentive in attracting productions to San Diego," said Brandy Shimabukuro, film liaison for the City of San Diego’s Film Office. "Productions like these help bolster our local economy and civic pride, while also creating and sustaining jobs in the film industry."Locations for shooting have yet to be determined.The Disney+ series follows the story of the early days of the U.S. space program as it competed to be the first to put man in space. The series is based on the bestselling book by Tom Wolfe.California's tax credit program has enticed a total of 22 TV series to relocate from other states and nations, according to the commission.This round of applications for tax credits for TV projects was held Sept. 29 to Oct. 7. Due to the program's success with ongoing TV projects, the allocation round was open only to newly relocating series and recurring series accepted during previous rounds, the commission stated.For their first seasons in California, "Hunters" and "The Right Stuff" are on track to generate a combined 5 million in below-the-line wages and other qualified expenditures, film commission officials said.Like all film and TV tax credit projects, their overall spending will be significantly greater with the inclusion of above-the-line wages and other expenditures that do not qualify for incentives under California's targeted tax credit program, commission officials said."It's great to emerge from the pandemic shutdown with news that two more successful TV series are relocating to California," said Colleen Bell, the commission's executive director. "Such projects are a primary target for our tax credit program because they bring high-quality jobs and significant in-state spending."Based on information provided with their tax credit applications, the two projects will employ an estimated 440 cast members, 374 crew members and 6,056 background actors/stand-ins over a combined 195 filming days in California.They will also generate significant post-production jobs and revenue for the state's visual effects artists, sound editors, sound mixers, musicians and other workers/vendors as part of their eight-episode seasons, the commission said."We're thrilled to see this round of tax credits generate so much out- of-zone filming because it brings direct economic benefit to regions across the state," Bell said. "Based on their qualified spending and out-of-zone production, the two relocating series announced today will receive reservations for an estimated .5 million in tax credit allocation."The current list of projects eligible for tax credits is subject to change, as projects may withdraw and their reservation of tax credits is reassigned or rolled over into the pool of funds for the next TV allocation period.The state's next tax credit application period for TV projects will take place March 15-22. The next application period for feature films will be Jan. 25 through Feb. 1. 3781
