With TikTok facing just one more day before a US-imposed ban on downloads of the popular app, President Donald Trump said Saturday that he will allow a deal that will allow the Chinese-owned service to be used in the US.While details of the possible transfer of TikTok to Oracle are not known, Trump said the deal has his blessing.“I have given the deal my blessing. If they get it done that’s great; if they don’t, that’s fine too,” Trump told reporters.Trump has cited privacy concerns for taking the action against the social media network.TikTok has gained popularity among younger Americans in recent months for its short, entertaining video clips. The TikTok community has often been critical of Trump. Earlier in the summer, users of TikTok organized by reserving tickets to Trump’s rally in Tulsa, which failed to draw the type of crowds the Trump campaign expected. The Trump administration has complained that the application takes data and is used by the Chinese government."All the things that you care that you want to make sure the Chinese Communist Party doesn’t have, we have a responsibility to make sure that the systems that you’re using don’t give them access to that," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in July. 1244
With the Republican Party picking up its national convention and moving it to Jacksonville next month, the local sheriff says his county isn’t ready to host such a massive event. The event was moved out of Charlotte after President Donald Trump and Republicans could not receive assurances from North Carolina that the convention could be held without social distancing restrictions.Traditionally, political conventions are massive undertakings for law enforcement agencies. While security at the convention itself is generally handled at the federal level, thousands of officers help secure the area around the venue. When the GOP convention was held in Cleveland in 2016, Cleveland Police had backup from agencies across the US. The officers provided security at protests, as well as surrounding events attended by delegates and surrogates. But with the event moving to Jacksonville on short notice, plans that take months to come together haven’t had a chance to crystalize."With less than 40 days until the expected Republican National Convention is slated to arrive in Jacksonville, I am compelled to express my significant concerns with the viability of this event,” Sheriff Mike Williams said on Monday. “It is my sole responsibility to provide safety, security for our city and more importantly for the citizens who I serve. So, with a growing list of challenges, be it financial, with communication, with the timeline, I cannot say with confidence that this event or our community will not be at risk."This year’s convention is expected to be scaled back from those in the past due to coronavirus concerns. But with unrest over concerns of racial injustice throughout the US, large protests are still expected outside the site of the convention. 1759
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — Rock climber Emily Harrington has become the first woman, and fourth person, to free-climb the Golden Gate route on Yosemite National Park’s granite wall in a single day.The 34-year-old began to scale 3,000-foot El Capitan early Wednesday. The San Francisco Chronicle says Harrington reached the top in 21 hours, 13 minutes and 51 seconds, despite banging her head on the granite wall at one point.Free climbers don't use ropes to ascend, only to catch them if they fall.Harrington posted about her accomplishment on Instagram over the weekend.“I never believed I could actually free climb El Cap in a day when I first set the goal for myself,” she wrote in a caption. “It didn’t seem like a realistic objective for me. I didn’t have the skills, fitness, or risk profile to move so quickly over such a large piece of stone. But I chose it exactly for that reason. Impossible dreams challenge us to rise above who we are now to see if we can become better versions of ourselves.”As for her head injury, Harrington says she suffered a “nasty slip” that almost took her resolve. It left a deep gash on her forehead, but she soldiered through it and reached the end by about 10:30 p.m. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ????? ?????????? in an attempt to chase down a car that rear-ended him.Olufemi S. Olomola, 38, was charged with two counts of abduction, reckless driving and felony hit and run for the Monday night incident.John Murray and Tameka Swann said Olomola picked them up from their home just before 8 p.m. Monday for a night out on the town. But, shortly after pulling away, they said someone rear-ended their Uber on Chamberlayne Avenue.“Our Uber attempted to pull over so that they exchange information, but the car didn’t stop behind us. They went around us and sped off and that’s when our Uber sped off behind him,” Swann said.Murray began to stream their trip on Facebook Live from the backseat. The driver pulled onto West Broad Street and raced through several red lights, according to the video. The couple said an SUV then crashed into the side of their car at West Broad Street and Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The video showed the driver continuing to speed away, narrowly missing a bicyclist.“At approximately 8:15 p.m. on Monday, officers were called to the 2800 block of West Broad Street for the report of a hit and run. Officers arrived and spoke to the driver who reported that while transporting passengers, his vehicle was struck by another car and that car left the scene,” a police spokesperson said.“That was the scariest moment of my life,” Swann said. “I have never been that scared in my life. It was a nightmare.”The couple says they suffered minor bruises and were checked out at the hospital.A spokesperson with Uber said they are also investigating the ride.“This driver’s behavior is concerning, and we have removed his access to the app pending investigation,” said an Uber spokeswoman.Anyone with information about the first hit and run or this incident is asked to call Detective G. Drago at (804) 646-1369.Olomola is due in court on Thursday morning. This story was originally published by Brendan King on 1909
