If your dog has been with your family for years, you may have noticed they've changed since you first adopted them, not just physically, but in their behavior. A recent study published in Scientific Reports confirms that.Researchers say a behavior may stay the same, but the way dogs express it will change. For instance, if dogs are active and curious when they're younger, they'll still be that way in comparison to other dogs when they get older. However, they may not be as interested in discovering things as they once were.“We know that dogs can become much more mellow,” said Alex Blutinger, Crical Care and Emergency Specialist at Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital. “They can become less active, less interested in other animals and other environmental factors around them.”In comparison to humans, there's less of a need for dogs to change their personality over time.Dogs only need to meet basic criteria in order to function.Their prime time for development is between puppy age and 7 years old.“You could deduce from it that if your dog has good habits, up until the age of 7, they might retain those habits for the rest of their lives because at that point, it hits their maximum maturity level. At the same time, bad habits might stick as well,” said Blutinger. If you're looking to adopt a puppy, be aware they likely won't be the same dog 10 years down the road. Their personality shouldn't be all that counts. 1429
If you've been hearing the disembodied voice of a laughing young woman or child in your home lately, there's (probably) no need to call a ghost hunter.According to The Verge, Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that "Alexa," the voice of Echo smart speakers, may cackle unprompted from time to time.In a statement to Scripps National, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the company is changing how to make Alexa laugh. "In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase 'Alexa, laugh,'" Amazon said. "We are changing that phrase to be 'Alexa, can you laugh?' Which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance 'Alexa, laugh.' We are also changing Alexa’s response from simply laughter to 'Sure, I can laugh' followed by laughter."A number of users caught Alexa's laughter on video and posted the clips on social media, saying the laughter appeared to be unprompted, often coming in the middle of the night. So Alexa decided to laugh randomly while I was in the kitchen. Freaked @SnootyJuicer and I out. I thought a kid was laughing behind me. pic.twitter.com/6dblzkiQHp— CaptHandlebar (@CaptHandlebar) February 23, 2018 1200
How a man who was discharged from the US Air Force for assaulting his spouse and child was able to purchase the firearms he used to carry out the deadliest shooting rampage in Texas history is just one of many questions facing investigators as they continue to look for answers on Sunday's church massacre that left 26 people dead. The House Armed Services chair called for oversight after the Air Force did not share information that would have stopped the shooter from buying a gun. 503
How do you like them apples?Apple just became the first American public company to cross trillion in value. The iPhone maker achieved that big number on Thursday when the stock passed 7.04 a share. Apple is now up more than 20% this year.Shares surged after Apple reported earnings that topped forecasts and a healthy outlook on Wednesday.Even though some think Apple needs a new product to keep sales and profits booming, Apple has rallied past the trillion level thanks to solid sales of the iPhone 8 and X -- particularly in China and Japan -- and surging services revenue from the App Store.Related: Apple is showering its investors with cashApple is benefiting from investor euphoria surrounding the tech sector broadly as well -- and it could soon have company in the trillion dollar club.Amazon, Google owner Alphabet and Microsoft have all rallied to near record highs this year, too. Amazon is worth nearly 0 billion while Google and Microsoft are each now worth more than 0 billion.Apple is not the first publicly traded company in the world to surpass the trillion dollar mark though.Oil giant PetroChina briefly topped a trillion dollar valuation in 2007 when its stock began trading in Shanghai, but shares quickly plunged afterward. PetroChina, which is also listed on the New York Stock Exchange, is now worth about 5 billion.The-CNN-Wire 1375
In an open letter published Thursday, Syracuse University said that a large gathering of underclassmen on Wednesday night may have already derailed the school's plans to keep the campus open through the fall semester before classes have even begun. According to The Daily Orange, the school's student newspaper, more than 100 students, many of them not wearing masks, gathered on the school's quad on Wednesday night. It's unclear what event the students were attending, or why the students were crowded together.In-person classes at the school are scheduled to begin on Monday.Students at Syracuse have been asked to sign a "Stay Safe Pledge" ahead of the fall semester. In the pledge, students promised to maintain a social distance of six feet, limit gatherings to no more than 25 people and wear a face covering on campus. All students — even those who choose not to sign the pledge — could be referred to the school's Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities for not complying. In its open letter, entitled "Last Night's Selfish and Reckless Behavior," Vice Chancellor J. Michael Haynie called the gathering "unsettling.""... the students who gathered on the Quad last night may have done damage enough to shut down campus, including residence halls and in-person learning, before the academic semester even begins," Haynie wrote.Haynie closed his letter by challenging students to practice better social distancing as the semester went on."I want you to understand right now and very clearly that we have one shot to make this happen," Haynie wrote. "The world is watching, and they expect you to fail. Prove them wrong. Be better. Be adults. Think of someone other than yourself. And also, do not test the resolve of this university to take swift action to prioritize the health and well-being of our campus and Central New York community."Several other large universities have already experienced outbreaks of COVID-19 just days after welcoming students back to campus. Notre Dame shifted to remote learning after 150 students tested positive for COVID-19 after a week on campus. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill made a similar shift after 130 students tested positive for the virus after a week of classes. 2241
