Haitian officials said it was the strongest earthquake to hit the country in more than 200 years.Eight Chinese peacekeeping police officers also died in the quake."We received the first sum of money donated for Haiti on Jan. 14, and since then, more and more citizens have come here for donations," said Zeng Zhiqian, of the Chengdu Charity Federation."Starting today, we prolong our working time by two hours. We will also work on weekends to receive donations," he said.In Dujiangyan City, about 200 students and teachers at the Xiang'e Primary School held a candlelight vigil Monday evening, praying for the children in Haiti.Sichuan is now recovering from the 8.0-magnitude quake on May 12, 2008, which left about 87,000 people dead or missing."The Haiti quake reminds me of the Wenchuan (in Sichuan) quake. We Sichuan people are beneficiaries of domestic and international assistance. Now it's time for us to give a hand to Haiti people," said Tan Yunjun, a staff of the Dongfang Turbine Co. Ltd. in Sichuan's Deyang City.The company suffered severe losses in the Wenchuan quake, with building collapses and huge casualties.The company held a donation ceremony on Monday, collecting more than 80,000 yuan from the staff in less than one hour. ABU DHABI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 World Expo, slated for May 1 to Oct. 31 in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, will provide an opportunity for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China to enhance their mutual understanding, officials said Wednesday.The UAE is the first country to complete the "base-build" of its own pavilion at the Expo, with the exception of China's national pavilion, the state news agency WAM reported.The UAE pavilion will carry the Gulf nation's message to the people of China and many other countries, Saqr Ghobash, chairman of the National Media Council that is coordinating the project, was quoted as saying."We are particularly focused on the theme of Expo 2010 -- ' Better City Better Life' -- because we recognize that this resonates very deeply with the UAE's own experience," he said.Ghobash added that the UAE government and people have made huge strides towards creating a modern society that respects its past whilst embracing the present."We have much to share with our friends and partners in other countries. SHANGHAI, Feb. 15 (Xinhua)-- The luxury ocean liner Queen Mary 2 arrived at the Port of Shanghai Monday afternoon, making its first port call in China since its maiden voyage in 2004.The world's reputed cruise carrying about 2,500 passengers and 1,200 crew arrived at the port at 1:30 p.m., and would stay for about 10 hours before leaving for Nagasaki, Japan.Queen Mary 2 was the largest luxury liner which ever made calls at the Port of Shanghai, marking the beginning of a peak of cruise arrivals at the host city of the 2010 World Expo.Shanghai immigration officers had flown to Hong Kong, the previous destination of the cruise, to ensure that all passengers on board could go through necessary customs procedures earlier."So visitors on the ship would have enough time to have a peek of Chinese Lunar New Year's celebration in Shanghai," an immigration official said.Queen Mary 2 is one of the world's largest, longest and most expensive luxury liners, which cost two years and one billion U.S. dollars to build.The ship is 345 meters long, 72 meters high, and 41 meters wide with a cruise speed of 30 knotsThe cruise is owned by the cruise line conglomerate Carnival Corporation.
