WASHINGTON -- A veteran who lost his genitals due to a blast in Afghanistan has received the world’s most extensive penis transplant, according to the Associated Press.Surgeons at John Hopkins University said they wanted to address “an unspoken injury of war” by rebuilding the man’s entire pelvic region, transplanting a penis, scrotum and part of an abdominal wall from a deceased donor.In total, officials with the hospital said the surgery took 14 hours.Such transplants "can help those warriors with missing genitalia just as hand and arm transplant transformed the lives of amputees," Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, Hopkins' chairman of plastic and reconstructive surgery.The patient, who asked to keep his identity hidden, is expected to regain urinary and sexual function.The scrotum transplant didn’t include the donor’s testicles, so reproduction won’t be possible.Three other successful penis transplants have been performed. Two in South Africa and one at Massachusetts General Hospital.For functionality, surgeons had to connect nerves and blood vessels. VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — The man accused of killing his girlfriend in Cardiff pleaded not guilty Wednesday at his arraignment.Henry Cowen, 41, stood stoically inside the defendant's box, watching Deputy District Attorney Marnie Layon accuse him of murdering 43-year-old Sabrina Lukosky. Friends at the courthouse said Lukosky was a beloved butterfly breeder, who was "so lovely."The investigation began when Lukosky's mother requested a welfare check in early October, after not hearing from her daughter for several days. Officers came to the gray flat the couple shared on Cowen's mother's property in Cardiff. They saw Lukosky's car but noticed a foul smell coming from the residence. A few days later, they executed a search warrant and found Lukosky's dead body and signs of a violent struggle inside the bedroom. "There was a broken stick, a bottle that had been broken, some amount of blood, and the victim had a 1.5-inch vertical gash to her forehead," Layon said. But that was not what killed her. The Medical Examiner said Lukosky died of strangulation and blunt force trauma. Prosecutors believe Cowen then left North County, first to got to Los Angeles. Then they said he took a Lyft to Riverside County, where he met with his children's mother. Investigators believe it was then that Cowen took steps to escape the country."That woman and her father, at his request, took him to the Israeli Consulate there, so that he could make arrangements to obtain a visa to get out of the country to move to Israel," Layon said. "They learned when they were going through the process, that would take six to eight months, and an expression was then made that the preference would be to go to New York."But before he could leave, officers with the Fugitive Task Force arrested Cowen in Riverside County on Oct. 11. He remains in custody with no bail.Cowen has an extensive violent criminal record, including assaulting an ex-girlfriend in California and kidnapping and torturing a man in Washington State. Video of an Arizona guitar hero is wowing people around the country.  The guitarist is Ridge Brown, a senior at Ironwood High School in Glendale, Arizona. He played the national anthem for a school assembly and the video posted by his teacher has gone viral, with thousands of clicks and attention from national news outlets. The reason, Ridge is a student with autism. The performance in front of his classmates was the first time he played in public, and he nailed it. "I was a little nervous, but I always felt excited," Ridge told Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix. "Autism can't hold me back because I'm a real rock star." That's the message his dad, Glen Brown, loves to hear. "There's a very, very smart person inside there, trying to get out," Glen said. Glen's mission in life is unlocking that potential. These days, Glen said Ridge loves talking and interacting with people, but that wasn't always the case. Ridge was nonverbal until age three. Music was the thing that finally freed Ridge from his autistic silence when he started singing with the radio. "It helps me express every emotion I have inside my entire brain," Ridge said. Now, he has plans for an encore."If the Suns wanted me to play the National Anthem at the game I'll be doing that," Ridge said. At the end of Ridge's first performance, a thunderous applause warmed dad's heart. "I broke into tears," Glen said.
