As many people started decorating early, it's likely 2020 is a "boom" year for Christmas tree sales. Some even bought a "real" tree for the first time.In July, Bob Schaefer had a feeling it was going to be a big year for Christmas tree sales. The general manager of Oregon-based Noble Mountain Tree Farm says his company looks at the big holidays leading up to the Christmas season to get an idea of what the market will be like.“The next thing we watch is pumpkins - again, off the charts, early,” Schaefer said.Noble Mountain is a large tree producer, and it has been in the Christmas business since 1969. It now sells about half a million trees a year. Schaefer says it developed helicopter harvesting and can have your tree cut and shipped in 24 hours.“This year, we shipped to Dubai, Hong Kong, Canada, Mexico and of course the US,” Schaefer said.Christmas trees are a 10-year crop and once a farm has harvested those trees that are mature and ready, that's it for the tree.“Our sales were off the charts and we did sell out,” Schaefer said. “We’re wholesalers, we don’t sell to individual customers, but our wholesale sales were done by the first of October. Our trees were committed for sale."Schaefer said people started decorating the weekend after Halloween, leading to thriving initial sales.“If it turns out that COVID has people staying home and they have in their hearts the need for a lot of Christmas cheer, then we can provide that with a real tree,” Doug Hundley, spokesman for the National Christmas Tree Association, said.He said if you don't have your tree yet, don't worry. They won't sell out."We’ve never had a shortage. What we have now is a nice balanced, tight market between supply and demand,” Hundley said.It's no easy feat to predict the market, in fact, it's next to impossible, he said.“When we have a boom year like we may be having right now, we kind of suspected it, but we didn’t anticipate it and we can’t produce a real tree overnight,” Hundley said. “So, we have to provide what we have and hope it’ll work out.”He said if lots are empty, it's because the major tree weekends have passed.Ninety percent of people have already gotten their tree this year. Hundley says what's left will suffice for those who still need one. He hopes they all sell. If they don't, they're rendered useless.“The beauty of real trees over fake is we have a highly biodegradable product, it’s grown naturally, part of nature, benefits the environment supports the American economy and when we’re done, we can grind them so easily and chip them into mulch,” Hundley said. “They literally become soil in a couple of years, put back in the ground.”If you are purchasing a natural Christmas tree, experts recommend not adding additives. AURORA, Colo. -- Inside the HealthONE Behavioral Health and Wellness Center in Aurora, Colorado, doctors and other staff members are dealing with a surge of patients.“With the impact of COVID, we have seen an increase in patients,” said HealthONE occupational therapist Emma Kowal.And one staff member, in particular, is bringing a level of care most others cannot.“A.J.’s definitely my favorite co-worker,” said technician Colin Smith.“He knows when we put the vest on – it’s time to go to work,” Kowal said.Three-year-old A.J. is a Labrador and golden retriever mix who came on board at HealthONE just in the nick of time, you could say - one month before COVID-19 shut down much of the country.“A.J. comes in and he’s instantly disarming,” Smith said.“This unbounding sense of love that he can provide to people,” Kowal said.A.J. is working with Kowal, visiting as many as 100 patients a week.“Whether that’s petting him, just touching him, brushing him,” she said. “Earlier someone bent down and kissed him on the head.”HealthONE and other mental health inpatient facilities like it are seeing a critical care need. The CDC’s latest numbers show 40% of U.S. adults reporting some kind of mental health issue – depression, anxiety and substance use among them – because of various challenges and hardships related to the coronavirus.“Dogs are often really familiar and really comforting for people,” Kowal said.Just this week, A.J. is visiting a floor of adolescents who recently attempted suicide.“The kids love him so much,” Smith said. “The way their faces just kind of light up when he comes on the unit. I wish they did that for me.”And Smith says it goes way beyond that.“A.J. is also a dream colleague for staff,” Smith said. “Oh my gosh, so much. He definitely helps when the staff gets stressed out. The majority of our industry partners never shut down,” said Peter Coleman.Coleman is the CEO of Buffalo Niagara Manufacturing Alliance (BNMA). Of the alliance’s 200 manufacturing companies, 80% were able to continue through the pandemic without layoffs, while 20% of the companies had some furloughs and layoffs.Now, as some of those companies are ready to bring back workers, they are running into three main reasons why some workers can’t or won’t come back.“I think one is health and safety. People who may be susceptible to disease are reluctant,” said Coleman. “Number two is childcare. We have reduced childcare accessibility and obviously schools are closed, and three the enhanced unemployment benefits.”In some cases, some people are making the same amount or even more money on unemployment. This is in part because of the federal government’s 0 per week Pandemic Unemployment Assistance on top of a state’s normal unemployment benefits, which range from 5 to 3.“The typical unemployment benefit in New York state for a manufacturing worker would put most workers in a ,000-,000 a year annual salary,” said Coleman.BNMA estimates it is only struggling to bring back about 10% of the workforce its companies furloughed, in part, because its industry’s annual salary is higher than the enhanced unemployment benefits.However, smaller businesses, restaurants, and lower paying industries are dealing with this more. So, now some in Congress are pushing to end Pandemic Unemployment Assistance at the end of July and replace it with a temporary cash bonus for those who find a job.“Our industry, we are going to be hiring,” said Coleman. “We need to employ 10,000 people in western New York in the next five years, just to handle the retirees that are leaving the market.” 2119
As the debate over police defunding wages on in parts of the country, officials in Albuquerque, New Mexico have found a middle ground.Mayor Tim Keller recently introduced a plan to strip the police department of million each year to help create and fund a new department that would respond to certain 911 calls instead of police.He says the city is the first in the country to do this."It’s a public health approach to public safety,” said Keller.The new department would consist of service workers, public health personnel, and specialists who would respond to calls related to homelessness, mental illness, and drug overdoses."For modern history, every city has said we’ll either send police or fire,” said Keller. “It’s about restructuring, institutionally, how we respond.”"We’re not the experts. We go over there and a lot of times our officers don’t know what to do,” added Albuquerque Police Chief Michael Geier.Geirer says the introduction of the new department comes as a relief. His police department is already short-staffed with officers, so handing these calls off to specialized personnel would not only help his department but the public.“We’ll be able to handle the higher-priority calls, and then our response time, and our community engagement," he said. "There will be more trust in the community.”Greier says, to a degree, the Albuquerque Police Department has already started delegating certain calls to the fire department and it has spared officers from responding to nearly 15,000 calls in just the last few months--many of which could keep an officer on scene for hours.“We want to get past responding to the symptom of the root cause,” said Albuquerque Chief Administrative Officer Sarita Nair. “We want to get down to that root cause and start addressing issues there.”Mayor Keller says the move to create the new department was only made recently, so there will be substantial planning and public input before it actually goes into effect. 1979
