BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese leader has encouraged people living in Qinghai to build better lives after a devastating earthquake jolted the northwest province in April.Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks Tuesday in Beijing when meeting delegates from the province who gave a lecture on heroic stories of quake survivors and rescuers.A 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Yushu of Qinghai Province on April 14, leaving about 2,700 people dead.Li encouraged people in Qinghai to carry forward the heroic spirit demonstrated in quake relief to strive for a better life.

BEIJING, Sep. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Thursday called upon Chinese industrial firms to improve the quality of their products as part of the efforts to transform China's economic growth pattern.Chinese enterprises should boost the quality of industrial products by upgrading their technologies and establishing a quality-based credit system of enterprises, said Zhang at a forum held in Beijing which focused on how to improve the quality and reputation of Chinese industrial products.He also called for accelerating the establishment of industrial standardization system, actively taking part in drafting and revising of related international standards and establishing a reward and punishment system that favors firms that manufacture high-quality products.Zhang also urged China's domestic firms to step up efforts to nurture indigenous brands to make "made in China" a byword for high-quality products.

At the outset, I wish to extend, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, warm welcome and sincere thanks to all distinguished guests attending the China National Pavilion Day events.Expo 2010 Shanghai is the first such global event hosted by a developing country in the history of the world expo. In the past five months, participants from 246 countries and international organizations have gathered by the Huangpu River to attend the Expo. The Expo site has hosted over 100 foreign leaders and nearly 60 million Chinese and foreign visitors. UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday voiced its hope that the upcoming summit of the Group of 20 largest economies (G20) will help achieve positive efforts that include the efforts to strengthen the institution building, enhance market confidence around the world and accelerate the recovery of the world economy.The statement came as Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was speaking at the informal meeting of the UN General Assembly on the upcoming G20 summit in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea (ROK)."China hopes that the Seoul summit will, in the spirit of mutual benefit and win-win outcome on the basis of implementation of the outcomes of previous G20 summit, achieve the following positive results: First, strengthen the institution building of the G20, enhance market confidence around the world, and accelerate the recovery of the world economy," Li said."Second, complete the IMF's share reform before the summit and fulfill the commitments made by the G20 leaders," he said. "Third, address the imbalance in development issues, so as to provide political support to the early realization of the MDGs," the eight anti-poverty targets to be reached by 2015. IMF stands for the International Monetary Fund, a Bretton Woods institute.A one more positive results that China hopes to see at the end of the coming G20 summit is to "facilitate the achievement of a comprehensive and balanced outcome at the Doha Round and the fulfillment of the Development Round objectives," he said."China stands ready to work with all parties concerned to ensure that the G20 summit continue to develop in line with the common interests of the international community," he said.Meanwhile, the senior Chinese diplomat also voiced his support to the UN involvement in the G20 summit."China supports the initiative of the G20 to invite, as it did in the past, representatives of the United Nations to participate in the summit and its preparations," he said."China welcomes the effort of the (UN) secretary-general to gather the views and proposals of the member states and bring these inputs to the summit in Seoul," Li said."The G20 summit has played a significant and positive role in coordinating global response to the international financial crisis and in promoting the recovery of the world economy. The United Nations is the most authoritative and representative multilateral organization," he said. "Enhancing coordination and cooperation between the G20 and the United Nations will help strengthen global economic governance, promote the sustainable and balanced recovery of the world economy, and address the legitimate concerns of small and medium-sized countries."The G20 members account for 90 percent of global output, 80 percent of global trade, and two-thirds of the world's population. They include: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the ROK, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Justin Yifu Lin, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank, said here on Sunday that China's economy is doing well.Speaking at a forum with two Nobel Prize winning economists in Beijing, Lin praised China's economic policies as "visionary" while the three economists talked about the challenges ahead."We admire the Chinese economy. But GDP is not all being directed for people's happiness." Roger Myerson, a professor with the University of Chicago and a Nobel Prize winner, said.The Chinese economy needs increased labor income and welfare to continue its rapid development, Myerson added.A spate of strikes and worker suicides hit the manufacturing hub of Guangdong in south China beginning in May, as workers demanded higher pay.Lin also called for government support in encouraging Chinese companies to become industrial "first movers" . "As a first mover, you can form the pattern," he said.
