SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, Dec. 8 will be the tenth year since a tragedy in the heart of University City.Four people died in 2008 when an FA-18 military jet crashed into homes in the San Diego community west of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.Rebecca Cosford was in her home and heard two loud noises. The first was the pilot blowing out the plane’s canopy and ejecting. The second sound was the crash.“One was popping, then a massive explosion that shook the whole house,” Cosford remembers.Cosford and her husband ran outside to see a “large column of smoke”.Teresa Rizzo not only heard it: she felt it. Someone yelled at her to stay back and told her a plane had crashed."I just thought, 'That was an airplane?’ That was an actual airplane that fell out of the sky and exploded around the corner from my house?"Marine pilot Dan Neubauer’s parachute landed a block west of the crash site after he ejected. He had been trying to reach MCAS Miramar on one engine, but his second engine failed. The FA-18 dropped like a stone.The four lives lost on the ground were Dong Yoon’s family."I believe my wife and two babies and my mother-in-law are in heaven with God," Yoon said after the crash.Neighbors had tried to help when disaster struck. Alain Blanc had a cell phone in one hand, 911 on the line. His other hand was holding a hose as firefighters arrived."There are moments we don't have time to be scared, you react! I heard this incredible bang, the earth shook, and I was outside. How I got there, don't ask me," said Blanc.Today, two new homes stand where the other two were destroyed. One thing is the same: the sound of roaring jets."Not that far but when they're close, when it's the same elements as it was that day: overcast, the middle of the day, cool temperatures and a plane flies really close by, my heart still races."Many neighbors told 10News they plan to attend a memorial which will be held Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. at University Village Park. 1982

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sara Jacobs, winner of the race to replace the retiring Susan Davis in California's 53rd district, is getting ready to begin the transition to Congress."Kind of feels like college. I’ll be going to freshman orientation, picking my office room, staffing my office. Talking with congresswoman Davis, to others about a transition. And then getting ready so that as soon as I get sworn in, I can hit the ground running," Jacobs told ABC 10News.Jacobs says the new Congress' first priority will be helping the nation bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. She says she'll insist any new round of stimulus spending will include funding to help small businesses and families, including child care.In her victory speech, Jacobs pointed out that at 31, she'll be one of the youngest members of Congress, and just the third woman to represent the San Diego region. Aeiramique Glass Blake, an activist and friend of Jacobs, says her election is inspiring to young San Diegans. "As young people, we need somebody who understands the dynamic and the perspective that we are coming from," says Glass Blake.Glass Blake says that while she knows Jacobs will work hard to represent all members of her district, she also realizes the importance of serving as a young woman in Congress. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several events and school systems in San Diego have had their immediate schedules altered due to the coronavirus.Several conferences set to take place in San Diego have canceled or rescheduled, while others don't have immediately plans to alter their plans.Schools systems are also preparing for the possibility of changing schedules and continuing the school year amid coronavirus worries.LATEST CORONAVIRUS UPDATESHere's a look at what events and schools have changed their schedules due to COVID-19 worries and what we're monitoring: (We'll update this list as soon as more information is available.)Events:The 34th National Institute on White Collar Crime has canceled its planned March 11-13 conference at Marriott Marquis San Diego, citing coronavirus fears. On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. The conference expected more than 12,000 attendees at the San Diego Convention Center.The 2020 CIE Summit business technology summit at Marriott Marquis San Diego has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 "out of an abundance of caution," organizers say.Organizers with the Future of Individualized Medicine 2020, scheduled for March 12-13 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, also canceled their event "based on concern for the health of our registrants, speakers, exhibitors and staff."The American Association for Cancer Research's annual meeting set for April 24-29 has been canceled. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Squatters turned a remodeled home in the College Area into a drug den, days after it was listed on as a vacation rental.Two weeks ago, John, who asked us not to use his full name, listed his four-bedroom home on the site VRBO, complete with new mattresses, comforters, and sheets. This past Sunday, a television installer entered the home to put up three TVs."He heard two people run out of the hallway out the back of the house," said John.RELATED: Residents concerned over rash of vandalism in Chula VistaPhotos taken by the installer show part of the scene they left behind: trashed bedrooms and beds littered with electric scooter parts. Also on the beds were crack pipes and other drug paraphernalia. Burn marks adorned three of the beds. John and his girlfriend had spent more than a week making the place perfect. "Just sad. She was crying out the break-in. Upsetting considering how hard we worked and how much money we spent," said John.John isn't sure how the intruders got past the locked doors. But once inside, it's clear they made themselves comfortable, using John's tools and toiletries, and eating food meant for future guests.
