SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 25-year-old has been arrested after being shot by a store clerk he was trying to rob, San Diego Police say.According to police, Hector Lopez-Gastelum entered the La Michoacana store on the 700 block of Vesta Street around 10:40 a.m. on October 18 demanding cash. Police say Lopez-Gastelum was armed with a handgun.After the clerk handed over the cash, the suspect reportedly demanded that a second register be opened.“While Lopez-Gastelum was still in the store, the clerk shot him twice in the torso with his own handgun, which is legally owned,” police said.The clerk then retrieved Lopez-Gastelum’s handgun and called 911. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 29-year-old Cal Fire firefighter who died Monday after a training hike is being remembered. Yaroslav Katkov was hiking Sunday with his crew from Cal Fire / San Diego County Fire Station 16 in De Luz when he had a medical emergency, Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said. Katkov was flown to Temecula Valley Hospital in Riverside, where he died Monday morning. His cause of death was not specified. “On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our sincere condolences to CAL FIRE Firefighter Yaroslav Katkov’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. It’s the work of brave firefighters like Yaroslav that keep our communities safe, and we are deeply grateful for his service,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom and Porter ordered flags at the Capitol and Cal Fire facilities to be flown at half staff.Porter said Katkov joined Cal Fire as a seasonal firefighter in August 2018. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A developer is proposing to build 1,200 housing units over the now-shuttered Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club golf course.New Urban West is planning what's called "The Trails at Carmel Mountain Ranch." The plans, submitted to the city, call for 1,200 multifamily homes - a mix of for sale, and for rent - plus 111-acres of open space, including six miles of trails. The 164-acre project would make 10 percent of its rental units available for low-income households at 65 percent of the median income. "The plan features affordable and market rate housing for young families, working professionals, and seniors in very close proximity to thousands of jobs and a major transit center," said a statement from Jonathan Frankel, a vice president at New Urban West.Carmel Mountain Ranch golf course closed in 2018, amid a series of golf courses shutting down due to skyrocketing water rates. The course has since been fenced off, and is dominated by weeds and overgrowth. Now, a group of residents called Carmel Mountain United is raising concerns over the development in the golf-centric neighborhood. The neighborhood has several golf-cart crossing warning signs and its streets are named after famous courses.Troy Daum, who heads the group, says many people bought in the neighborhood because of the golf course. Now, his group is raising concerns that the development could increase traffic and make it more difficult to evacuate quickly in the event of a wildfire. Daum said New Urban West has ignored those calls and should instead focus on redeveloping area retail centers into mixed-use housing. "I don't think there's compromise with 1,200 homes," Daum said. "There's just not room in the community to handle that."Frankel says the project comes after neighborhood workshops and online surveys. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with a death at a Rancho Pe?asquitos home stemming from a reported fight at the residence.San Diego police said officers were called to a home in the 12500 block of Darkwood Rd. in Rancho Penasquitos just before 4:15 p.m. Wednesday in response to a reported fight at the house.According to police, a man called 911 to report his 23-year-old son, Wyatt Austin Lane, had been in a fight with a guest at their home earlier in the day.Regarding the fight, the father reported that his son told him “the guest had lost and never regained consciousness,” according to police.Officers arrived to find a deceased male inside a bedroom with “apparent trauma to his body,” police said. The victim was not immediately identified.Lane was arrested and booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder.SDPD Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the incident. 921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Security is tight at San Diego's mosques following an arson attack at a mosque in Escondido early Sunday morning. Someone set fire to the Islamic Center of Escondido on West Sixth Avenue around 3 a.m, but a handful of worshippers was inside, and the group put out the fire before it caused any significant damage. When police arrived, they found a message in graffiti referencing the recent shootings at mosques in New Zealand. Monday afternoon, two San Diego Police Department patrol cars sat in the parking lot of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Directors say worshipers are nervous. "They accept the faith of what happened, others are very, you know, worried as well. It's a mixed mood," said Khelil Ouznali, vice chair of the board of directors. The center already has surveillance cameras all over the property and guards on duty, but now the directors are considering hiring armed guards. "We are looking into improving security, you know, we are looking into different options based on the feedback from our community," said Ouznali. On the campus of San Diego State University Monday, dozens of students rallied against hate. They marched through the student union chanting, "No hate at state, Muslims are here to stay, no hate at state, Muslims are here to stay!"
