BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms since early the week have swept a wide swathe of south China, leaving dozens people dead or missing and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate.     In Jiangxi Province, two people were killed, three more were missing and more than 100,000 have been evacuated following the heaviest rain this summer, local flood control authorities said. The rain damaged 178,000 hectares of crops, caused 8,231 houses to collapse, and incurred a direct economic loss of 1.31 billion yuan (191.7 million U.S. dollars). SHENZHEN, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) said Saturday that the ARATS will offer more support to help Taiwan businessmen weather through the financial crisis.     Chen said this at a symposium here Saturday on the development of Taiwan companies amid the financial crisis.     According to the Taipei World Trade Center, the second purchase delegation from the mainland had shown intention to purchase more than 600 million U.S. dollars worth of goods from Taiwan companies in the coming 12 months during a weeklong visit to the island, mainly involving food, drinks, garments and daily necessities.     "Under the current circumstances, we should positively seek more cooperation opportunities to overcome the hardships," said Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     The mainland will send the third procurement delegation to the island in August, focusing on the island's chemical industry, electronic products and automobiles.     More than 50 representatives from the mainland-based Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises, the Taiwan-based "Chinese National Federation of Industries" and other organizations attended the symposium, which was jointly held by the ARATS and the SEF.

BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council Monday published a guideline to maintain current agricultural development and promote income for farmers.     The guideline was issued on the Chinese central government's official Web portal www.gov.cn.     It consists of 22 items in eight parts, calling for more efforts to expand domestic demand, promote exports and stabilize grains' prices.     The guideline calls for more support for spring sowing, including pest control, guarding against natural disasters and science and technology services.     It also stresses the importance of granting subsidies to farmers and setting grain prices.

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- China said Wednesday that boosting regional trade and investment was a crucial task for countries in east Asia.     Premier Wen Jiabao also called on countries in east Asia to "deepen financial cooperation and infrastructure construction to increase the ability to confront economic risks." During talks with his Thai counterpart, Abhisit Vejjajiva, Wen said China would always support the leading role the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) played in east Asia. TAIPEI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian has been indicted on new corruption charges, prosecutors said here Tuesday.     While in office, Chen and his wife Wu Shu-chen took 10 million New Taiwan dollars (302,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes from a local businesswoman, and demanded bribes and donations totaling 300 million New Taiwan dollars from a former banker, prosecutors said at a press conference.     Chen was first indicted on Dec. 12 for money laundering and bribery. He and his wife were charged with embezzling 104 million New Taiwan dollars (3.15 million U.S. dollars) in public funds and accepting bribes of at least 9 million U.S. dollars in a land purchase deal. Chen and his collaborators are also accused of laundering the illegal income.     Chen has been in detention since last December and faces life in prison if convicted.     He was elected to the post of Taiwan leader eight years ago but was ousted in an election in May last year.
