It also has a staggering number of veterans who don’t have a place to liveAnd, even more alarming is the number every year who take their own lives.As ABC 10News Anchor, Kimberly Hunt explains…a non-profit in San Diego lead by, and staffed by, veterans is looking to change that.There are an estimated 1,100 homeless vets on the streets of San Diego. Statistically they commit suicide at a rate of 1.5 times higher than the general population.Kyle Drake is president of Cammies and Canines Sanctuary… a veteran owned, faith bases non-profit helping veterans by providing, among other things transitional housing, structure, and therapy.On this sprawling ranch in Dulzura, they’re given an opportunity.But Cammies and Canines Sanctuary under the importance of companionship. It pairs each veteran with a rescue dog which has been schooled by their master trainers as a service animal.Kyle’s construction company builds tiny homes on the property for each vet to have a sense of place. Tony’s pest control company, Mosquito Joes trains interested veterans to work in the pest control industry, and everyone is given a sense of responsibility and respect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County Officials gathered to brief the community about a potential pandemic of the Coronavirus locally. Currently, there are no community-spread cases of the virus in the County. However, officials are asking the community to prepare for the event. They are also urging citizens not to panic.Empty shelves line many big-box stores, as San Diegans fear a potential widespread Coronavirus pandemic, which would trap them in their homes for weeks at a time. But county officials said there is no need for hysteria."There is not a reason to panic, but we want people to be vigilant," Gary Cox, Chairman of the San Diego County Supervisors, said.RELATED: California declares state of emergency after 1st coronavirus death"There is a needle to be thread frankly speaking, between adequate preparation versus reactive, inappropriate response," San Diego County Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Nick Yphantides, said.This does not mean for every San Diegan to run to the store and buy everything. While County Officials say community spread of the deadly virus is only a matter of time, extra supplies are something we should all have anyway, whether it is for an earthquake, fire, or Coronavirus."Have two, three, up to four weeks of supplies including food, beverages, water, any medications that you might need, as well as materials for your pets," San Diego County Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten said.RELATED: Some stores see empty shelves amid coronavirus concernsLast week, the County health laboratory was stocked with 600 Coronavirus test kids. Now they are down to about 400. But with the possibility of a spread, new kits will be delivered to their lab by Friday."There is no commercial test available as of yet," Dr. Wooten said. And we will honor that obligation until it is unsafe to do so," San Diego County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Paul Gothold, said.If a person in San Diego test positive for Coronavirus, the County says military bases will no longer be used as Quarantine Centers. MCAS Miramar was only used temporarily for repatriated citizens who were overseas. New cases will be logged at hospitals, tested at the County lab, and quarantined at the patient's home."Individuals who become formal Persons Under investigation, our anticipation would be for those individuals to quarantine themselves at home," Dr. Yphantides, said.County Health officials reiterated that the best way to protect yourself is to continue good hygiene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego firefighters came to the rescue of a Mountain View family after they lost their home to a fire the day after Christmas.The fire left seven people displaced after tearing through the home just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday on Teak Street near Ocean View Boulevard. The fire burned through one of two homes on the lot and the family says they had to pull bars off the window to escape the fire, leaving four people injured.While crews responded and were able to get the fire quickly under control, the family lost everything — including Christmas presents that two little girls who lived in the burned home had unwrapped just one day earlier.That's when San Diego Fire-Rescue stepped in. Sunday, firefighters from Stations 12 and 19 delivered gift cards, toys, and clothing to help the family through their loss. "The gifts were courtesy of the San Diego City Fire Fighters Local 145. The family was very appreciative of this wonderful surprise that illustrates the generous spirit of the holiday season," the department said on social media.The family has also started a GoFundMe to help with expenses due to the fire. 1149
