After 40 years of making wishes come true, Make-A-Wish America is celebrating something else.The organization chose to celebrate through the eyes of one California teen who had one special and unique wish.Just like a summer camp, Kamp Karina has an activity list that's packed full of fun with dancing, magic, science, and even storytime. All of it was Karina's idea and wish.“The guy who does Olaf’s voice! He appeared there and I was like what the heck! That I had no idea of it surprised me and it made me really happy. It was a shocking moment and it made me really happy,” Karina said.The 16-year-old Central California teen was surprised because, when granted an experience from Make-A-Wish, she really one had one thing in mind.“I actually didn’t know what I wanted to wish for. All I know is I wanted to give, not get,” Karina said.Karina says she's finally free. After seven months of brutal treatment for Lymphoma, she feels like herself again and wants to focus on things she loves, like music and cooking. But her wish is always to help others because she can relate.“I know how it feels to be sick and not have any idea if you’re going to make it or what’s next or - it’s hard, mentally and physically,” Karina said.Karina is part of a new generation of kids who want something bigger, who wants more than receiving something or meeting someone.“But the newest wish kids, which is so inspired, want to go to the fifth idea which is give,” Make-A-Wish CEO Richard Davis said. said. “Karina is embodiment of that. She wanted to give kids a day to forget they're sick.”And so Karina’s wish was granted, and it worked. Hundreds of children from around the country like youths in Connecticut, Florida, South Dakota, California, got to attend Kamp Karina virtually.“We’re introducing a sense of philanthropy and love and care and if you think the world needs anything right now, and I know we need a lot of things, but this hope and the spirit of people working around a child to make their life better is about the most wonderful antidote for anything we’re dealing with that I can think of,” Davis said.Make-a-Wish grants 15,000 wishes a year across America to children who medically qualify. Most of the time, the wish is easily granted.“My favorite ones are the simple ones: I want a dog. I want a blue guitar,” Davis said. “I want to be mayor for a day.”And above all else, it's what comes with that wish that makes Make-A-Wish magical.“We bring families into this right away because it changes the outcome, it certainly changes the trajectory it gives them something to look forward to,” Davis said.When asked if her wish came through, Karina said. “Yes. Beyond, I mean I think, it went past my expectations. I’m beyond grateful and happy with it. It was a beautiful thing.” 2795

A wildfire burning in Arizona, just northeast of the Valley, is now the most massive fire actively burning in the country, according to officials.The wildfire has already demolished more than 114,000 acres, and it is just five percent contained, as of Thursday morning.The good news is no homes nor businesses have been destroyed, but some worry it is just a matter of time, as evacuations have been implemented in multiple towns.Fire crews say the wildfire has spread so rapidly and is difficult to contain because of the heat, low humidity, terrain, and high winds.The threat snuck up on Tonto Basin homeowners like Robyn Hill."I really wasn’t prepared for it. I thought the fire was too far away, and you are just kind of in disbelief," said Hill, who got the evacuation order Monday.Hill said she rushed home from her hair salon business in Payson once the alert came across her phone.She packed up the RV with her husband and two dogs, and they quickly left town."So when you got two hours to get your stuff and go. It would help if you were a little more prepared," she said. "I packed the bread and the peanut butter, but forgot the jelly."While the jelly makes for a good joke, leaving home was no laughing matter."You kind of shed a few tears as you leave the house because it’s my home, it’s my little paradise," said Hill, who tells KNXV she had just finished adding a pool and re-doing her garden and yard during the pandemic slowdown.While Hill and others are evacuating their homes, the Red Cross has been setting up shelters."[Monday] we had over a dozen people check-in," said Jim Gilloon, with the Arizona Red Cross. "We don’t just let them walk in. We do a screen test, we take their temperature, and we ask him questions, and then they are clear to come in."At the shelter, the people forced from their homes can get a meal, information, and then the Red Cross helps find them a place to stay for the night."It’s a wildfire season. So we are prepared," said Gilloon. "The fire is spreading, and there is no containment. So we are looking at several days, a week maybe."Many Arizonans from Punkin Center, Sunflower, and Apache Lake are now sleeping in motels.Casie Malinski though, stayed behind in her Tonto Basin home Tuesday to care for her many animals."This morning I took my older children into Payson and dropped them off with their things," said Malinski. "I have full faith in our hotshots and fire crews who are out here."As 440 firefighters desperately try to squelch the inferno, hundreds more are praying for them."I think everybody is just terrified and hoping they will get it out in time before the residences are lost," said Hill. "Let’s stop it on the highway, please. She is calling for the retailer to remove the item from shelves.As of Monday afternoon her post had more than 166,000 comments and 15,000 shares.Several who commented on the photo disagreed with the woman, saying people of many races have picked cotton. Adnan Syed, the subject of the groundbreaking true crime podcast Serial, has been granted to a new trial by the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, according to the Associated Press.In 2016, a Baltimore City Circuit Court vacated Syed's conviction in the murder of Hae Min Lee. The state then appealed the ruling. According to the Baltimore Sun, the state can still appeal to the Maryland Court of Appeals. It's unclear if the state will choose to do so.Syed was convicted of killing Hae Min Lee in 2000.
