On Wednesday morning, a viral post on Twitter claimed that there were more ballots cast in Wisconsin than registered voters. As the Wisconsin Elections Commission helped explain, that claim is not supported by data.The tweet, which has since been removed, claimed that there were only 3,129,000 registered voters in Wisconsin. However, that number represents the registered voters in the state from the 2018 midterms.After the tweet went viral, the Wisconsin Election Commission tweeted an explanation. The election commission said the State of Wisconsin had 3,684,726 active registered voters as of Nov. 1. That is higher than the number of ballots counted so far, which is 3,240,275.The WEC also pointed out that Wisconsin allows for same-day voter registration, which could further increase the number of total voters.The tweet with the misleading claim has since been removed from Twitter, as the social media platform says it "is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process." 1018

(KGTV) — The Oceanside Main Street program launched a campaign to support local businesses in May and now that restrictions have been extended, so has the fundraiser.Manager Gumaro Escarcega said the goal is for the community to help the community, so they partnered with Whitlock Ink to create t-shirts and masks to sell that say “Oceanside Strong.” Initially, ,000 was raised and a majority of that was distributed to 13 Oceanside small businesses. Escarcega said with restrictions continuing, they made the decision to keep fundraising, so the products are still available.“As the pandemic continues to impact our communities, we felt that we need to send positive messages out there,” said Escarcega.Stacey Holmes owns Otterlei Coastal and said she’s felt the hit of the pandemic, so she was relieved to receive the help from the campaign.“We were able to use the grant for a little buffer, not knowing what tomorrow is going to bring,” she said.She also said that not only is the money-making a difference, but the community is coming together like never before to help each other. She said store owners are encouraging customers to stop by each other’s shops and restaurants, which has also helped.“I’m trying to pay it back forward to, make sure you go visit such and such store, go visit this restaurant or what have you, so even as a business we’re all supporting each other as well,” she said.Escarcega said right now, Main Street is working on another grant program that should be launched in August. He said the goal is to create a shop local campaign.“Just keep moving forward and keep thinking positive and we’ll all get through this,” said Escarcega. 1694

  

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- It can be easy to take the ability to read for granted, but there's nothing easy about admitting you can't read, especially for adults. Just ask Gary Swimpson."I have a 7-year-old grandson that can read better than me," he says, "it hurts. I'm 61 years old, I'm supposed to be reading to him, but I can't let that get me down. I have to keep pushing forward."Pushing forward is Gary's mantra. He exudes positivity, but it wasn't always that way. "As far as my background, where I come from, 'the hood' and all that, you know I made a lot of bad choices coming up and so I'm trying to do the right thing in life for the first time in my life." He says the hardest part of his journey has been having the strength to continue pushing himself to do it. "When you never read growing up and now you're in your fifties or sixties and you try it, it's a challenge."When Gary moved from Los Angeles to Oceanside, he decided it was time for a fresh start, beginning about a year and a half ago with the Oceanside READS Learning Center.Chelsea Genack Eggli, the literacy coordinator for Oceanside Public Library, said, "It takes a lot of courage and it takes a lot of strength to go back to school when somebody is older in life," she says.Before the pandemic, literacy tutors met with adult learners in person, one-on-one. Now they meet via Zoom."He was having a hard time seeing his growth. I saw it because when he came he wasn't reading at all, and then he read a chapter book," says Chelsea. Gary says, "It made me just feel so good," when he saw the numbers on an assessment showing his progress.Now, not only is Gary reading, he's also writing poetry for a contest --- an ode to Oceanside. When asked what he'd like to say to others who could benefit from the program, Gary says, "Well, we have always heard that it's never too late right? It's how much you believe in yourself." He goes on to say, "There's always a chance to get your life together as long as you're breathing. It worked for me and I'm really grateful, and anybody can do it. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - A full-page ad published in the Sunday Union-Tribune is creating waves in the effort to save San Diego beaches. Save Oceanside Sand is a North County group who started about three months ago to help protect the beaches in Oceanside after decades of erosion. Co-founder Dirk Ackema tells 10News, “When that ad came out in the Sunday paper we were so excited, so surprised, so curious.” We did some digging and found out Christie Walton posted the ad. Not only is she an avid surfer and San Diego resident, she is the daughter-in-law to the founders of Walmart. Both Walton and Save Oceanside Sand have similar perspectives when it comes to saving the sand. They believe in installing jetties and backfill beaches to protect the sand. In the ad, Walton talks about the current dredging method as not being a long term solution for San Diego Coast. The installation of jetties and groins to protect coastlines has been used around the world. Walton even looks to the specific groin used in Hawaii as an option to be used here in San Diego. Save Oceanside Sand has grown traction throughout the community over the past few months and are looking to expand further now knowing Walton could be a major ally. 1229
