SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Siblings are frantically searching for their missing mother, after she walked out of Hospital Angeles in Tijuana Friday afternoon, according to her family.Jessica Puente, 73, accompanied her daughter, Johnica, for a surgery. When Johnica woke up, her mother was gone. "First thing I was like where's my mom, where's my mom? And they were like we don't know where she went," Johnica said.After questioning staff, a security monitor revealed Jessica walked out while speaking with the security guard at 11 a.m. Jessica asked the guard where to exchange money, Johnica said. She thinks her mom was going to find something to eat."We'll leave no stone unturned in Tijuana," her brother said Sunday night. He and their other brother flew into San Diego over the weekend, from their Seattle home, to help with the search."We tried to call the consulate but they're closed, we um called all these hospitals, we even went to the morgue, they went to the morgue this morning to see if there are any unidentified bodies," Johnica said they filed a police report with San Diego PD, passed out fliers in Mexico and have been using their connections to churches to spread the word.Johnica described her mother as shy, and says when she gets tired, she can get a little confused. She said her mother liked to dress up with flowers in her hair, jewelry, "her jacket and her shoes, she always liked to match, even though she's almost 73." Jessica is not only a mother of three, but grandmother to a little boy and girl, both under 10-years-old.When we asked how Johnica was able to stay so calm while talking about her mother's disappearance, she replied, "I don't know I just believe that she'll come up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego workers are now checking the more than 250,000 water meters across the city to make sure families are billed accurately.The city announced earlier this month that it overcharged hundreds of families in four neighborhoods - Rancho Bernardo, Mira Mesa, Rancho Penasqutios and Carmel Valley. There's now a full city audit of the water billing department, and the department itself is checking the meters independently.RELATED: San Diego to expand audit of water billing overchargesSan Diegans have complained to 10News for months about spiking water bills, with little to no help or explanation from the city. Some have even questioned whether their meter is read - given that it's often covered in dirt. Terri Mitchell, who lives near Oak Park, said she raised concerns to one meter reader recently over his workload."He says i'm going to have to dig here, I've got like 400 more meters," she said.RELATED: Dozens of San Diegans come forward with high water billsThe city invited 10News to join one of its meter readers as he checked meters in Rancho Bernardo on Friday. The city wanted to show that there is a system in place to read the meters, since people were questioning the validity of their water bills and whether their meters are even read. "A lot of customers sometimes feel that since they can't see the meter, that we're not reading it," said Steven Broyles, who has read water meters for the city for 18 years.Armed with a pick and a handheld computer, Broyles opened a handful of meter caps along Madrigal Road in Rancho Bernardo, as part of his day to read 500 meters.RELATED: City of San Diego finds 343 water customers were overchargedSome weren't easy to see. Broyles used the pick to scrape dirt off of one meter, and also looked closely at another that had scratches over where the numbers are visible. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six people were arrested at a Pacific Beach DUI checkpoint Friday night, according to San Diego Police.The checkpoint was held on the 2700 block of Garnet Avenue between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.According to the department, nearly 1,350 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, 845 were screened, seven drivers evaluated, and six arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.“Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public,” the department said. 619

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some University City residents are upset over the city's lethal methods to curb the squirrel population at Nobel Athletic Area park. Many see the park as an escape from the neighborhood's concrete jungle. "One of the joys of being here is to watch the wildlife in the morning-- the rabbits and the squirrels especially," resident, Tracy Benson said. But that began to change once Benson started seeing more green boxes on the ground, similar to water irrigation units.RELATED: Chula Vista seeks public input on future bayfront parks in online survey"There is a hole back here, and in this hole is where the bait is placed. So the idea is the animal eats the bait, comes out, and essentially dies," Benson said. The more of these boxes the animal lover saw, the fewer squirrels she ran into on her walks.10News contacted the City of San Diego to get answers. A spokesman explained that the green apparatus is a "bait box." It helps manage what they call an "overabundant squirrel population."The City's Parks and Recreation Department began using them a few years ago to stop the squirrels from damaging their athletic facilities, landscaping, and eroding the hillside. While Benson understands the need, she believes the method is too cruel.RELATED: San Diego crews work to repair road after massive water main break in North Park"Poison has no place in a public community like this," Benson said. The facility caters to young children and includes an off-leash dog park, both could potentially be affected by the poison nearby. Instead of bait boxes, Benson suggests educating the public by putting up more signs around the park."[The public] are going to have an understanding that if they feed the animals, they actually do more harm than good. The city adds, if they do not control the squirrel population in this way, the effects go up the food chain. There will be more coyotes and snakes, animals that would be dangerous to park users. Still, Benson says there must be another way."I think that is upsetting, and I don't think that is the measure that should have been taken to properly control the population of squirrels," Benson added.The city says they periodically place the bait boxes in their parks when needed.  2491
