CINCINNATI — Four Cincinnati Reds players knelt during the national anthem before an exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers at Great American Ball Park Tuesday night.Among the players kneeling in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement were Joey Votto, the Reds' star first baseman, pitcher Amir Garrett and left fielder Phillip Ervin.Garrett recently said he was reluctant at first to speak out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, but he now says he's found his voice and calls for an end to racial injustice."I was scared to talk about these injustice issues we were having because in baseball, there's not a lot of African Americans that play the game, and I was nowhere near Kaepernick (in prominence)," Garrett said. "I felt I could be pushed out of the game. That was really scary for me."Since the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis earlier this year, Votto has been an outspoken supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement. Earlier this month, he was seen wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt during a workout."I think I've changed as a man. I feel my perspective has changed," Votto told the Associated Press earlier this month. "I didn't want to (speak up), but I couldn't sleep. There was a long stretch where I couldn't sleep. When it affects me that deeply, I felt strongly about saying something and learning. Every day I'm trying to learn."The demonstration by Reds players came a day after several members of the San Francisco Giants knelt for the national anthem prior to an exhibition on Tuesday. Among the Giants players who knelt were outfielder Hunter Pence, infielder Pablo Sandoval and rookie Mauricio Dubón, as well as manager Gabe Kapler. The Giants' demonstration prompted a response from President Donald Trump, who said that when any player or coach kneels for the anthem ahead of a sporting event, "the game is over for me." 1907

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The heart and soul of Chula Vista’s economy are the family businesses run by multiple generations. La Bella Pizza Garden is one such mom and pop shop.10News anchor Kimberly Hunt stopped by this 1950s pizza parlor, now run by Tony Raso.“I used to roll pizza and make meatballs in the 70s”, says Raso.Raso proudly displays photos of his mother and father, who opened the restaurant almost 60 years ago.“That's his delivery vehicle in the 50s. We were delivering pizzas way back.”See complete coverage of Life in Chula VistaThey passed the family business on to their son, who proudly keeps their delicious traditions alive.“We get lots of families. They enjoy our classic pizza. It's never changed," said Raso. “We make meatballs, spaghetti, lasagna. They've been cooking all day.”La Bella Pizza Garden now has three generations of family history. Raso’s son Michael works alongside his father. He will eventually take over the business. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – The Chula Vista Elementary School District’s appearance on a website list of applicants seeking to reopen schools was determined to be a mistake, the district told ABC 10News.CVESD never applied for a waiver, stating on their Facebook page on Thursday night:“We are aware of a ‘Chula Vista Elementary’ fraudulently being listed as an applicant for a school reopening waiver. Our District has NOT applied for a waiver to reopen our schools. As a part of the waiver process, we would consult with labor units, parents and community organizations first. Our District is working with investigative authorities to determine how documents were submitted purporting ‘Chula Vista Elementary’ is a waiver applicant with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.”District officials said the 2020-21 school year will begin Aug. 31 with distance learning. On Friday, a district spokesperson told ABC 10News that the listing was the result of an error made by an independent charter school that selected the Chula Vista district name on the San Diego County Health and Human Services website. The spokesperson said the HHSA informed the district of the mistake and the website has since been corrected.Meanwhile, at least 27 schools in San Diego County have already been given the green light to begin in-person learning, with dozens of other schools still waiting for approval. Those schools that have been approved have several things in common, including the ability to maximize outdoor space. The Rancho Santa Fe School District is on the list of those that can bring students back to campus, and Superintendent Donna Tripi said preparing for this was not an easy task."We had to work on the class groupings, we had to do training for staff, training for parents, we had to write up all the protocols and really think out every move that everyone makes on campus,” Tripi said.San Diego County was removed for California's virus monitoring list on Aug. 18, beginning the 14-day countdown the county needs to stay off the list in order to reopen K-12 schools in-person.On-campus classes could resume as soon as Sept. 1, depending on the school district. 2188

CINCINNATI -- A school bus crash Monday afternoon on Winton Road in Cincinnati left a 12-year-old girl in "critical" condition, flung a 2-year-old boy onto the road and resulted in the hospitalization of at least 18 other children, according to Lt. Steve Saunders. At least 11 children, including the seriously injured boy and girl, were taken away in ambulances Monday afternoon after the Pleasant Hill Academy bus and four other vehicles collided around 2:30 p.m. Nine others were taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center after their parents took them there to be checked out."I was devastated," parent Latisha McKelton said of the moment she heard about the crash. "I didn’t know what was wrong with my child. I just had to jump in the first moving vehicle and get here as fast as I could to my child. I didn't know if he was injured. I didn't know if he was going to be alive. I just didn't know. I was praying the whole way."According to a news release from Cincinnati police, a total of around 40 people were involved in the crash.Police said the bus was traveling southbound on Winton when a northbound vehicle driven by 23-year-old Robert Jett made an ill-fated attempt to pass the vehicle in front of him.Jett lost control of his car and struck another, this one driven by Jordan Ervin and transporting a pair of toddlers. Ervin's vehicle spun out of control and hit the bus; bus driver Tina Turnbow attempted to control her spinning vehicle and struck a fourth car, this one driven by LeAndre Acoff.Ervin was hospitalized in serious condition, as were his two passengers: The 2-year-old and a 1-year-old.The injured 12-year-old had been riding in the school bus at the time of the crash, according to the release. A district assistant superintendent went to Children's Hospital to help families there. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who are affected by this," Saunders said.He added charges were pending against Jett. 2010

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. – A black bear is thanking its lucky stars that a Wisconsin family was in the right place at the right time. After a day of fishing on Sunday, Tricia Hurt told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that she, her husband and their son were returning to a dock on Marsh-Miller Lake when they spotted something strange in the water. As the family approached, they realized it was a young bear that was struggling to swim because it had a cheese ball container stuck around its head. They felt compelled to help free the bear from the tub, worrying that if they didn’t, it wouldn’t be able to make it back to short safely. So, Tricia says her son Brady maneuvered their boat while her husband leaned into the water to tug on the container. It took multiple passes, but they eventually managed to free the animal from the plastic. Tricia says the bear then swam back to shore. The family believes that if they had not helped the bear, it may have not made it to shore, because it was breathing heavily and the container had filled with water.Tricia documented their rescue efforts on video and posted it online. As of Tuesday morning, her Facebook post has been shared more than 18,000 times. The family says the bear had actually been spotted several times over the past few days and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources had been looking for it, but without any luck. 1389
