(KGTV) -- While COVID-19 has taken the lives of thousands across the country, one couple has come up with a way for their memories to live on. Rebecca Heiss and Dermot Jevens, from South Carolina, came up with the idea to create a site to honor those who lost their battles to the virus. “This is going to be an entire community built memorial,” says Jevens.“It was frustrating and sad and scary, and realizing that these were people,” says Heiss. “They weren’t just numbers.”“Mourning America” launched in late March. So far, there are 4,500 names posted. The couple has received nearly 100 submissions from families all over the U.S., with the picture and story of their loved one. The couple says some families haven’t been able to give their loved ones a proper memorial. “This lady’s mom passed away in a nursing home. She wasn’t able to be there with her,” says Jevens. “She wasn’t able to go to the funeral. You can feel that pain and almost that release as she was writing and sending in the story.”The couple has not received any submissions from San Diego yet, but they say their mission is to honor each person who has passed from the virus. If you have a loved one or friend who lost their battle with the virus, the couple encourages you to submit their story and photo to the “Mourning America” site. 1323

A bipartisan group of mayors urged congressional leaders on Friday to provide funding for local and municipal governments that have struggled amid the coronavirus pandemic. The letters was signed on behalf of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The letter was co-signed by Democratic mayors Greg Fischer of Louisville, Kentucky, and Nan Whaley of Dayton, Ohio, and Republican Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami.“We strongly encourage Republicans and Democrats to come to an agreement on a COVID-19 relief package that will contain the onslaught of the pandemic and promote our economic recovery,” the letter read in part. “We implore our leaders: Do not give up. Do not accept failure. Come together to meet the needs of our citizens and enable a safe economic recovery."As a direct result of the pandemic, our budgets have been hit hard and revenue shortfalls threaten our ability to meet essential needs. Jobs have been lost and critical services are being cut.”In the spring, the House passed a bill that included nearly trillion in funding for states and local governments, as many states and towns prepared to make massive and unprecedented cuts to local services such as police, fire and schools. Trump has in the past expressed opposition to bailing out state and local governments on the verge of financial ruin due to a lack of tax revenue.House Democrats, Senate Republicans and the White House have remained far apart on a broader stimulus package. Democrats have made funding of local governments a top priority for a spending bill while Republicans say they want a more focused stimulus package. 1608

(KGTV) — White House chief of staff John Kelly will leave his position within the Trump Administration by the end of the year, President Donald Trump told reporters on Saturday afternoon.CNN on Friday reported that Kelly was expected to announce his departure in the coming days."John Kelly will be leaving ... I don't know if I can say retiring, but he's a great guy," Trump told a pool of reporters outside the White House before departing to Pennsylvania for the Army-Navy football game. "John Kelly will be leaving at the end of the year. We will be announcing who will be taking John's place, it might be on an interim basis."Kelly has been part of the president's administration for 17 months, serving as Secretary of Homeland Security before moving into the role of Chief of Staff following the departure of Reince Priebus in July 2017.While no one has been officially announced to succeed Kelly, sources tell ABC News that Nick Ayers, who currently serves as Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, is the leading candidate to take over.Kelly's departure has been long-rumored in Washington, even while he had recently accepted Trump's invitation to stay on in the position through his 2020 re-election campaign, ABC News reports. 1250
