In the 2020 general election, President-elect Joe Biden beat out a number of formidable candidates to earn the highest office in the land, including President Donald Trump, Libertarian nominee Jo Jorgensen and Santa Claus.Yes, even ol' Kris Kringle received at least one vote for president in 2020, according to the Vermont Secretary of State's website.Every state has its own rules for conducting write-in candidates. In fact, according to Ballotpedia, most states will only accept votes for certain pre-approved write-in candidates.Ballotpedia reports that only eight states — Alabama, Delaware, Iowa, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and Wyoming — will count the write-in votes for any write-in candidate. And of those states, it appears only Vermont publishes the name of every write-in candidate on its election results webpage.Write-in candidates received 1,942 votes for president in Vermont in the 2020 presidential election. That's compared to the 242,820 that Biden received in carrying the state. It's also more than the 1,269 that independent candidate Kanye West received, despite being listed on the ballot.Among write-in candidates, Sen. Bernie Sanders received the most with 619. That's not exactly a surprise — the left-wing, progressive senator calls the state home and is currently in the midst of his third term as one of the state's senators.Other top vote-getters included moderate Republicans like Sen. Mitt Romney (57 votes) and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich (30 votes). Candidates who sought the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, like Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (78 votes), Andrew Yang (42 votes) and Pete Buttigieg (24 votes) were also among the top vote-getters among write-ins.Notably, 37 Vermonters thought Vice President Mike Pence should get a promotion to the Oval Office.Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, also received a handful of votes. When totaling up various iterations of his name (Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dr. Fauci, Tony Fauci, etc.), he received 13 write-in votes.Then, there were the celebrities. TV hosts Oprah Winfrey (6 votes) and Mike Rowe (5 votes) racked up multiple write-ins. Jennifer Lopez received a vote, as did LeBron James and Dwayne Johnson. There was even a write-in for a ticket of Tyra Banks and "John Teffer" — though that voter may have misspelled the name of Jon Taffer, the host of reality TV series "Bar Rescue."Write-in votes also dipped into the fantastical and absurd. INDIANAPOLIS — It has been quite a journey for Kari Wegg.She had been working tirelessly as a NICU nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for more than 25 years when she found herself fighting for her own life with COVID-19 in that very same hospital.“It’s devastating. I never thought something like this could happen to me,” Wegg said. “It’s been so hard because I was healthy, and I thought if I ever got it, I would be fine.”Wegg first got sick in June and diagnosed with pneumonia. Then in July, she, her husband and two children tested positive for the coronavirus.“I do work in a hospital,” she said. “My husband also works in a hospital. It’s very possible we got it from the hospital.”Her family had mild symptoms and recovered quickly. However, Wegg did not.“It’s been since July since I’ve seen my boys., and I haven’t been able to hug them or love on them, and they miss me so much,” Wegg said.Wegg was put on a heart and lung bypass machine on Aug. 19. She says her doctors discussed removing care.“Their dad had to sit down and tell them their mother might die, and they’ve had to try and cope with that,” she said.But Wegg says her husband wouldn’t give up. Calls were made, and she was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago on Sept. 5 for a double lung transplant.Northwestern was the first hospital in the country to perform a double lung transplant on a COVID-19 paitnet, and Wegg was only the sixth such patient to undergo the surgery.“I am eternally grateful to the family of my donors,” Wegg said. “I don’t know anything about them or how they died but they gave me the gift of life.”Grateful to be alive, but devastated financially with non-stop medical bills, she suffers in her bed, while her fellow healthcare workers continue the fight. Wegg says she even has coworkers who have died of the virus.Wegg says she's praying that more people take the virus seriously."I’m hoping my message as a nurse who didn’t expect any of this can get out there and bring it home to people who don’t necessarily want to wear a mask or want to isolate themselves or quarantine," Wegg said. It seems Americans are returning to air travel, despite another spike in coronavirus cases in the United States.The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says it screened more than 1 million passengers Sunday, the highest number of travelers screened at the agency's checkpoints since March 17, around the time the pandemic hit the U.S.The weekly volume of screenings was also the highest it’s been since the onslaught of the coronavirus, with about 6.1 million passengers screened nationwide last week.The number of fliers remains well below pre-pandemic levels, but TSA says the 1 million single-day passenger volume is a noteworthy development that follows significant TSA checkpoint modifications in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.The agency says it has been deploying acrylic barriers and technologies that reduce or eliminate physical contact between passengers and TSA officers.New credential authentication devices are also being installed at various airport checkpoints, enabling passengers to insert their ID directly into a card reader, eliminating the need for a TSA screening officer to touch the ID.Additionally, many checkpoints now feature computed tomography (CT) scanners, allowing TSA officers to manipulate an image on screen to get a better view of a bag’s contents.“This technology often enables officers to clear items without having to open a carry-on bag,” TSA said. “The new CT scanner further reduces the need for a passenger to remove contents of their bag during the screening process.”TSA has established a “Stay Healthy.
