A dispute is brewing between city officials in Denton, Texas and the parents of a 10-year-old boy with autism after body cam footage was released last week from an incident in April showing a school resource officer body slamming the boy, WFAA-TV reported.According to an account of events given to WFAA, the boy, Thomas Brown, poked other students and was ignoring his teachers when a school resource officer was called to the special needs classroom. The boy then backed into a cubby as school staff and the officer closed in. Video of the incident shows the officer picking up the boy as the boy began kicking and screaming. Moments later, the boy was brought to the ground, and placed in handcuffs. Thomas' parents said the use of force was "excessive.""I see a little boy hiding," mother Emily Brown told WFAA. "Not doing anything that's an imminent serious harm to someone else."Brown said she realized just how serious the incident was after she got home and noticed bruises on her son's body. Both the Denton school district and city of Denton both disagreed with Thomas' parents."The safety of all of our students is a top priority and we have protocols in place to ensure this," the Denton Independent School District said in a statement. "In this instance, protocol was followed, with the school resource officer making the determination, after all other efforts to deescalate the situation proved ineffective, that the student was a detriment to his own safety and that of the other students and staff."In the city's statement to WFAA, it claimed that Thomas "was posing a serious threat of injury to himself or others."According to ABC News, the Browns plan on suing the school district and city over the incident.  1791

A driver was killed on Interstate 24 when a piece of concrete went through his windshield. Police said the object was likely thrown. The incident happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday near Shelby Avenue. Officials with Metro Nashville police said 54-year-old Joe C. Shelton was killed.According to police, the piece of concrete was likely thrown from the Shelby Avenue Bridge. The incident closed the interstate for most the morning, causing major delays for commuters.     509

A chalk art controversy at Cleveland State University is getting national attention online.A group of students created a memorial for the victims of 9/11 on the sidewalks outside the CSU student center. On the morning of the somber anniversary, the university's maintenance crew removed the murals with a power washer.Now CSU and the head of its maintenance department are getting blasted on social media. The comments and reaction have not been good.But what is being lost in the online outrage is that this form of expression is actually not allowed on campus.CSU sophomore Tiffany Roberts pointed out the streaks of color that remain on the sidewalk outside the CSU Student Center Wednesday."So right here, we had two twin towers and it said 'pause,'" said Roberts.She was standing near her project on the morning of Sept. 11 when a crew showed up with a power washer."It was really disheartening to see all of our hard work kind of wash away like that," said Roberts.Roberts, along with nearly a dozen of her classmates, are members of a conservative campus group."Our whole intention was to just honor those people," said Donato Nunez.On Sunday night, they used chalk to pay their respects to the victims of 9/11."I looked through the handbook to make sure it was OK for me to chalk on campus," said Roberts.Roberts told WEWS she didn't see anything about chalk."The only thing I found was that you are not allowed to attach anything to the sidewalks or the pavements," said Roberts.Monday morning, the CSU Director of Facilities Management, who also happens to be Muslim, sent a crew out to wash the artwork away.A handful of conservative websites, along with social media, quickly erupted with outrage, alleging that it may have been politically motivated. "Absolutely disgusted by this!" wrote one Facebook user. "People can desecrate the American flag, people can refuse to stand for the national anthem, they organize Rally's to keep others from using the freedom of speech, and all that's ok... Students work hard in drawing an American flag on Sept 11th, it gets washed away, on the order of an Islamic man, and that's ok! Exactly what's wrong with this country!"Now some members of the conservative campus group acknowledge the rumors got out of hand by social media users who were unfamiliar with the facts.  "It just looks so bad, and we didn't want that," said Nunez.Cleveland State said this has nothing to do with religion and it does not allow students to use chalk to express themselves on campus.
