LOCKPORT, N.Y. — Theresa Mellas spent eight weeks on the front lines of the COVID crisis, then decided she needed a different kind of challenge to help her take that experience all in.Mellas booked a one-way flight to Portland, Oregon, bought a bike off of Craigslist that night, and hit the road the next morning.Almost 3,500 miles later she rode right into the ocean at Staten Island last week.But let’s go back to March. Mellas was visiting her twin sister in Germany when she touched back down in Lockport, New York right at the start of the COVID crisis.She’s been a traveling physician assistant for almost ten years and that forced her to have a tough conversation with herself.“What am I doing here? I’m a healthcare provider. Let’s step it up, T. Let’s do this,” she said to herself.She said her parents encouraged her to take up the call from Governor Andrew Cuomo for help at the frontlines. It was a challenging time.“The contract was for 25 days straight. Straight, yeah,” said Mellas. “And then you could renew your contract, so I did.”On top of working in the ICU at a hospital in North Central Bronx overnights, 7 pm to 7 am, Mellas picked up some work in urgent care swabbing COVID patients during the day.“I knew it was going to be hard, and it was hard. Dealing with patients that are suffering, their family members…that was really really tough. But I think we all came out stronger on the other side of it.”Most of Mellas’s patients were on ventilators and she called the experience “grim”, but she said she was also inspired during her time there by all the people that took up the call, as well.“People come together from all over the U.S. Not knowing anything about this illness,” she said.“And then [in] a complete disaster crisis, I mean crisis. It was wild. To see all of these health care providers come together and say, ‘What do we know, let’s pool our knowledge. Let’s try to figure this out. Let’s try to save lives’… that was just awesome. It was awesome.”The last days of May, Mellas’s sister drove her back to their parents’ house in Lockport. She wouldn’t be there long.Mellas, looking for a way to decompress, bought a one-way ticket to Portland.“‘I can’t leave the US, so I’ll just bike across the US. That seems like a really good thing to do,’” she said she told herself. “I really don’t have any other explanation, It was a very impetuous decision.”There wasn’t really a plan. Mellas had some friends she wanted to see and she had never been to Jackson Hole. So, she picked a few locations in the States and connected the dots in-between.“I had google maps, and I would look at the roads and kind of just figure it out the night before is essentially what I would do.”Biking anywhere between 100-130 miles per day, she rode all but seven days on the 40-day trip back to the East Coast.It was her faith she said that got her through her time in New York City and across the United States.“I was on my bike, I was just praying every day. I was like 'I could be in the ICU. I have two healthy lungs, I have a healthy body, healthy mind'… I am so blessed right now. I am so blessed.”And in the end, Mellas maintains she discovered the purpose of the trip as she continued and it really wasn’t about her, but about the people, she’s met in this journey.“I can’t emphasize that the people that I met complete strangers. They offered me food, they offered me showers, you needed a place to stay. I’d knock on people’s doors ‘can I sleep next to your cornfield?’ I met so many incredible people. People came together, people are rallying. LOS ANGELES -- Fire crews are on scene after a small brush fire broke out in a Los Angeles neighborhood Wednesday night. The fire broke out just before 6:30 p.m. in Pacific Palisades. Lockdown has been been the way of life for many months at the Central Union Mission. No residents are allowed in or out, as part of an effort to keep COVID-19 out of this homeless shelter.“That was a difficult choice for us, but our goal from the beginning was to provide a safe place for homeless men to be fed, sheltered and be COVID-free,” said Joseph Mettimano, president of the Central Union Mission. “And so not allowing new folks come in, that was heartbreaking.”It was heartbreaking but effective.Since the start of the pandemic, there have been no cases of COVID-19 at the shelter. It’s a feat they weren’t sure would be possible at the start of the pandemic.“We started working on this process very early with the same countermeasures that everybody else was doing: handwashing, sanitizing hand railings, all those types of things,” Mettimano said.That also included regular health screenings for residents and staff, all of which combined to create a coronavirus-free zone.“I think we've gotten close. The guys that are here in the facility over the last six months and encouraging one another to try to follow the protocols that the mission has [in] place,” said Jonathan Moncado, a resident at the shelter.While the shelter lockdown hasn’t been ideal for him and the other 100 or so men there, Moncado said there is a sense the sacrifice has been worth it.“We just are thankful to the staff that they've kept us safe for all these months,” he said. “There hasn't been one confirmed case or any deaths.”The same can’t be said everywhere.Across the country, people who are homeless haven’t completely avoided COVID-19.The most recent numbers show 400 of the 12,000 people who are homeless in Seattle tested positive for the virus, with at least two deaths. COVID-19 has infected 1,300 of the 66,000 people who are homeless in Los Angeles, with more than 30 deaths. Meanwhile, in Phoenix, about 500 of the estimated 7,400 tested positive, with at least 9 deaths.Yet, the numbers available may not be the most accurate. COVID-19 testing for those who are homeless isn’t widespread. In addition, the recorded deaths from coronavirus often don’t list someone’s housing situation, all of which could be skewing the numbers.Back at the Central Union Mission, there’s an even more pressing situation: a change in the weather.“With winter coming, we want to make sure that we can do all we can to help folks to prevent them from getting hypothermia,” Mettimano said. “So, we're going to have some difficult decisions coming our way.”It is a potential for tough decisions that may need to be made in the face of a devastating pandemic and unforgiving mother nature. 2675

That is the question on the minds of many political campaigns as the nation heads into the final stretch of the 2020 campaign.Door knocking has traditionally been a fall pastime in every presidential election with swarms of volunteers descending upon neighborhoods in the most competitive counties around the country.For months, Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden blocked his supporters from going door-to-door, citing the ongoing pandemic.Meanwhile President Donald Trump’s campaign continued to hit the pavement knocking on as many as 1 million doors per week nationwide.That is how it appeared to be for the rest of the campaign until last weekend when the Biden campaign abruptly shifted policy and gave the green light to let volunteers start knocking on doors.Top Democrats with the Biden campaign insist strict health guidelines will be followed.DOES IT WORK?For Parker Madock, a 19-year-old staffer for Trump in Michigan, door knocking has become a part of her daily routine.“We are knocking right now the people we aren’t sure of,” Maddock said during a recent door knocking event in Livonia, a suburb of Detroit.“Every time you talk with a voter, they are more likely to vote for your candidate,” Maddock said.How many Biden volunteers actually door knock, after being told it was unsafe for months, is unclear.Biden Detroit Volunteer DeLisle Horton-Willis told Scripps National Political Editor Joe St. George recently she thought the timing wasn’t quite right.“I think it’s a little dangerous at this time,” Horton-Willis said.Horton-Willis says she much prefers phone banking and that Michigan Democrats have been making around 10,000 phone calls each day on behalf of Biden.“I can’t do a lot but if everybody do a little. We are good,” Horton-Willis said.The Biden campaign has said Pennsylvania, Nevada and Michigan are expected to see the first major wave of door knocking.
