(KGTV) - An East County woman was devastated to find out the money she spent to buy a new cat likely went to con artists.“I just felt like I lost my sense of love for humanity,” Suzi Moon told Team 10. Moon’s Maine Coon cat, Teka, recently passed away. She was 15-years-old and a longtime member of her family.“He was the best cat ever,” Moon said. When he died, she was heartbroken.“I was in an emotional mode,” Moon said. “I wanted to get another one because I just was so used to that cat.”Moon searched online and found a website that advertised pure Maine Coone cats. She emailed the website and got a response. “They emailed me back and this cat that I saw on the website was a gray cat. Beautiful,” she said.She also spoke to someone on the phone, who sounded legitimate. The man asked her questions, such as whether or not she was having the cat indoors and if she was declawing the cat. Moon eventually scraped up 0 and sent the money through Zelle, something she now regrets.The day the supposed seller was supposed to ship the cat to her, he asked for more money for a special crate. “We need to have you cash app, send ,000 more,” Moon said. After back and forth with the seller and refusing to pay more, Moon said they eventually blocked her number. The 0 she paid was gone. The website, puremainecoons.com, is no longer active. Team 10 found the website on petscams.com, a site that bills itself as a pet watchdog website. The Better Business Bureau said pets are the top scam when it comes to online purchases. The average loss is 0. Moon wanted to share her mistake with others in hopes nobody else falls victim to this scam.“I just felt violated. There [are] people out there taking advantage like that. It’s disgusting,” Moon said.Team 10 called the person Moon said she spoke with about the cat. That man hung up before answering any questions. The BBB suggests do not buy a pet without seeing it in person. The organization also recommends conducting an internet search of the photo. If you see the same picture on different websites, it could be fraud. 2112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hundreds of volunteers, from all over the state, are in San Diego for Governor Gavin Newsom’s emergency preparedness campaign. It’s called “California For All.” The campaign is designed to help emergency responders during wildfires and other disasters. California For All campaign is bringing together 600 volunteers. The Community Emergency Response Teams, also known as CERT, is on a mission to help prepare people in the community in case of a natural disaster.CERT members are also trained to assist first responders. “It’s an opportunity for community members to learn basic skills to prepare their community to respond, in case of a major disaster or any event, where the actual true responders can’t get there on time” Dore Bietz. Governor Gavin Newsom and legislators came together to make a million commitment to the campaign. A video message from the governor was played during today’s session. CERT members also help engage diverse and socially vulnerable communities during times of need. “It is very difficult for first responders to come in when there is a language barrier,” says Bietz. CERT is a FEMA- recognized program. Members suggest every household should have a plan in case there is an evacuation in their area. 1265

San Diego (KGTV)- As Westin Hotel workers fight for better wages, local business owners are fighting to keep business.Hotel workers have been on strike for the past few weeks. Business owners say customers are now avoiding the area and its costing them money.Joey Aiello owns a shoe shine stand that sits outside of The Westin Hotel. He says he’s seen fewer customers this month because of the strike. “People don’t think its a big business but it supports my family,” says Aiello.He says since the workers hit the picket line, he’s lost 00 in business. “The first week they were here I made less than 0 a day. We have to make 0 a day to stay a float.” Other business also say they are concerned about the noise.The San Diego Police Department says they have received six complaints since October 9th. A spokesperson with Marriott International sent us this statement that says in part:“We are disappointed with some of the tactics the union has deployed including the noise levels. We continue to work with local police to address these issues and we are grateful to our guests for their patience during this time.”The Unite Here Union President, Bridgette Browning, says employees are now in negotiations with the hotel. She also sent us a statement that says:“While we are sympathetic to neighboring businesses - we believe the Marriott has the power to fix this strike and the businesses should be demanding that Marriott do the right thing. The workers are not to blame for the low standards that Marriott has created at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Several trailers were set up at El Toyon Park in National City and will become a study site for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial, ran by UC San Diego.Drugmaker Johnson & Johnson is looking to enroll participants worldwide for phase three of its Janssen trial, including here in San Diego.UCSD will recruit the majority of the participants.The trial was scheduled to get underway on October 7th, but UCSD researchers now say they're looking at Friday as a start date."We hope to enroll about 2,000 people in San Diego, the study will be enrolling 60,000 people internationally," said Dr. Susan Little, a UCSD professor of medicine and principal investigator for the trial. "Eight Department of Defense trailers form the basis of our permanent vaccine site, vaccine clinic, in National City."Little said this will be a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to determine the vaccine's safety and efficacy."Does it reduce the frequency of COVID infection overall or the severity of COVID infection among study participants?" she said.Little said there is already a lot of data available from the past."This is the same vaccine vector that has been used for many other infectious diseases like HIV, Zika, Ebola," she said.Although the trial is open to all San Diego County residents who qualify, she said the focus would be on recruiting residents from the South Bay, which is why the clinic was set up in National City, instead of UCSD's La Jolla or Hillcrest locations."Communities of color have been harder hit in the sense they have higher rates of hospitalization, and many of them have higher rates of death, our hope was by placing the vaccine trial in a community that has higher rates of infection we could reach a more highly impacted community," she explained. "Those are populations that we hope will have a greater potential benefit from this vaccine."After concerns were raised over another trial that was later put on hold, UCSD worked with the Chicano Federation to ensure South Bay residents get the information they need to make an informed decision if they want to participate."We are putting safety as paramount for these studies, no study is going forward unless we are confident about the safety of the vaccine," said Little.The Janssen trial will be the third for UCSD to join. San Diego, CA (KGTV)- Some high school students in the Grossmont Union High School District will return to partial in-person learning starting on September 29.Sixty-eight percent of parents surveyed districtwide wanted their high school students to return to an in-person, blended learning model, while 32 percent wanted their students to stay in full-time distance learning from home.The district is moving forward with both options.Starting Tuesday, some students will be back on campus with limitations."Students have to be divided into smaller groups," said Theresa Kemper, the district's superintendent.If parents chose the blended learning model, their student has been assigned to Group A, Group B, Group C, or Group D, based on factions like students per household, transportation needs, and course schedule."They each will come to school one day a week," she said.The group placement determines which day the students will come to campus; they will be learning from home the rest of the time.The district created a roadmap for reopening, which includes five levels."We want to make sure that we're really confident with new routines that have been established, we want to make sure the county health conditions are continuing to improve," said Kemper.All schools in the district have been operating at Level 1, which is strictly distance learning.Level 2 begins next week and allows students to learn on campus one day a week, with 25 percent of the campus population, in class sizes of eight to twelve students."Our Special Education academies and alternative schools are also starting at Level 2, but will attend two days a week instead of one," she said.All students will be screened and have their temperatures checked before entering the classroom, teachers, and staff will be tested for COVID-19 regularly, and everyone will be required to wear facial coverings.The schools will also be deep cleaned each day, and students will be physically distanced from one another."If everything looks good, after about two weeks, we could potentially announce going to the next level," said Kemper.By level five, students will be back on campus five days a week.Kemper said the district is taking a cautious approach and has plans in place if a school needs to jump back a level at any time."If we change from two days a week to one day a week, then we already got a plan in place, and it's easy to transition to that," she said.
