CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- With cases of coronavirus continuing to spike in the United States, Southwestern College announced Tuesday that the campus will be conducting courses online for about a week as a precautionary measure.Students and campus staff are moving all in-person classes to online or distributed instruction from March 16 through the 20.The decision joins numerous other institutions throughout the country to help suppress the spread of the virus.List: Major universities suspending in-person classes amid coronavirus fears"This is a rapidly changing situation and we appreciate everyone’s patience as college leadership works to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for our students, employees and community," said SWC President Kindred Murillo said. They are also canceling "large public events at all our campuses." The college has satellite campuses in Chula Vista, National City, San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, and Coronado. "Athletic events will continue as scheduled without spectators," Murillo said.SECTION: CORONAVIRUS, EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOWThe college will be off for spring break March 23-27. The campus will reopen for regular "face-to-face" instruction on March 30.The campus serves about 19,000 students across its network and offers public programs such as swimming classes, a fitness club, a child development center, and art gallery."We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation in San Diego and readjust our prevention efforts as needed," Murillo said.In the last several days, dozens of major universities, including UCSD and Stanford University, have decided to cancel in-person classes as coronavirus fears spread nationwide. This is due to health officials recommending that the public avoid close social contact as they try to get a handle on the virus spreading nationally. On Monday, San Diego health officials confirmed that a female resident in her 50s tested positive for the virus after traveling overseas. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A family in Otay Ranch is hoping a group of teens will face consequences for allegedly assaulting their teenage son.The incident was captured on cell phone video and posted to social media by the teen's mother. The family says their teen was waiting for his mom to pick him up at Cotixan Mexican Restaurant on Thursday after school, when a group of teens walked in and started kicking and punching the boy. RELATED: Group calls for investigation into bullying of Muslim student in El CajonIn the video, you can see someone on the ground getting repeatedly punched and kicked. At one point in the seven-second clip, you can see someone throw a chair on the teen. The boy's father, Margarito Martin, tells 10News he was shocked when he saw the video. He says everything started days before on Instagram, when, he says, his son told someone to stop harassing one of his friends. Martin says one teen then started messaging his son telling him he was going to beat him up. Martin says the incident was reported to Chula Vista Police but he's worried the teens will get away with what they did. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several Chula Vista elementary schools are working to give students hands-on engineering experience the district says they can take into the job market. On August 1, 2016, a new type of learning burst into being with the start of the Innovation and Energy Station in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. The station helps teach students STEM. The station serves sixth grade students as well as serving as a community lab. In 2018, the lab grew again to include the Energy Station at Saburo Muraoka Elementary School. In August of this year, the program grew yet again to include the Hydro Station, which teaches students about the water industry. The lab begins by helping students identify which careers align with their interests while highlighting jobs in San Diego’s priority sectors. “It was designed to give students the opportunity to learn about their own strengths," Michael Bruder, District engineering teacher told 10News. “The students’ eyes light up when they see the lab space. You get the ‘Wow’ effect. You literally hear the students say ‘Wow!’ as they enter,” Bruder continued. At the Energy Station, students use Minecraft to create an energy efficient home and/or landscape. Students exploring other themes could be testing wind turbines or building circuits. The program also offers students a connection with local employers, giving them the chance to connect their hands-on experience and the region’s in-demand skills. Qualcomm, Microsoft, SDG&E, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association all partner with the program. “I want employers to realize that career education must start before high school,” says Matthew Tessier, assistant superintendent of innovation and instruction at CVESD. “We’d love to partner with more people and expand to every single priority sector.”Click here to learn more about the program. 1950
