SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday, Aug. 3, will mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge.A free concert will be hosted at 6:30 p.m. at the Coronado Golf Course, featuring the local band "Ron's Garage." Construction began in February 1967 and two years later, then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan ushered in the iconic structure as the first person to cross over it.Instantly, it changed how San Diegans commuted, mostly replacing ferry service used to cross San Diego Bay for 83 years.The bridge's iconic curve across the bay reaches 200 feet at its highest point, allowing an aircraft carrier to pass underneath its five lanes.Just a few years after the bridge debuted, the Coronado Cays, Coronado Hospital, and Coronado Shores condo community opened and Richard Nixon hosted the first state dinner held outside of the White House at Hotel del Coronado. Not only was the bridge a vital asset to the military facilities on Coronado but also the residents -- on and off the island.Coronado City Councilman Bill Sandke said, “This bridge is an icon around San Diego. There’s no way around it.”Port of San Diego officials say the bridge has made it easier to connect the five cities around San Diego Bay.The Port has plans to install color-changing LED lights on the bridge within the next two years, adding to its iconic nature.“Certainly red, white and blue for the Fourth of July. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University’s oldest known alumnus passed away just 17 days after celebrating his 107th birthday, the campus reported.According to school officials, William “Bill” Vogt is among the first students to set foot on the campus at Campanile Drive in 1931."It was during the Great Depression at a time when Edward L. Hardy, whom Vogt once recalled as “very low key,” was the school’s second president," the school said.SDSU said Vogt completed his "business degree course work in late 1934 when San Diego State had no official commencement ceremony for mid-year degree completion. Although he said he requested a diploma, he could not recall having ever received one."In 2018, SDSU President Adela de la Torre honored his request and presented Vogt with a diploma 83 years later during a ceremony.The school said that Vogt was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired in 1970 with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve."A notice of his death issued by the Navy said he enlisted in the Reserve with a rank of Yeoman First Class in 1940 and was called up Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as an intelligence officer at several locations, including California and Washington, D.C. While living in Seattle, he was called back to active duty upon the outbreak of the Korean War," the school said.Vogt's son described his father as a role model, best friend, and hero, but also as a loyal Aztecs basketball fan.“He saw 90 years of SDSU basketball and this was the best team in 90 years,” Bob Vogt said. “The team meant a lot to him." 1641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several North County residents felt their homes and businesses rattle briefly after a loud boom Friday.The noise and shaking were reported at about 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies in the North County received calls from Vista about the noise. 10News also fielded several calls from Oceanside and San Marcos over the incident.USGS did not register any major earthquakes in the region Friday, according to the agency's website. At about 1:31 p.m., USGS recorded a 1.6-magnitude earthquake with a depth of about 5 miles in the Ocotillo Wells area, about 100 miles east of Oceanside.Camp Pendleton was scheduled to perform exercises involving mortar fire and high explosive munitions, according to a noise advisory statement, and finish its Exercise Iron Fist training alongside Japanese armed forces on base Friday. However, a spokesperson for Camp Pendleton told 10News the base was on normal operations Friday.The base's website advises that, "depending on atmospheric conditions, the sound of the explosions may be amplified and heard up to 50 miles away."
