Ali Schroer was on board when her doctor told her she could save hundreds of dollars a month on her allergy medication by ordering it online. “I was a new professional and just trying to save some money, because it was so expensive,” Schroer says. She ordered the prescription on a website that claimed to be an online Canadian pharmacy. “It looked exactly like what I had been taking for years and years, and so, I really didn't think anything of it,” she says. But in a few weeks, she started to feel strange. “I had stomach pains and headaches and kind of achiness,” she recalls. “I would go almost into shock, like I would really get clammy and hot and get like these fever spikes.”When she told a family member about the medication she got online, they did some research and found the site had a reputation for selling counterfeit drugs. Schroer says she threw the medication away, and in within weeks, she felt completely better. Her story is a cautionary tale of the dangers of purchasing medications online. The FDA recently issued a warning letter about the Canadian drug distributor CanaRx, saying it supplied "unapproved" and "misbranded" drugs to consumers in the United States. “If you order medicines online and think they're getting them from Canada, they're probably not coming from Canada,” says Dr. Carmen Catizone, executive director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. “If you walk into a pharmacy in Canada, then those are medications that are safe enough that are approved by Canada.” An attorney for the company says CanaRx only facilitates the sale of drugs by American pharmaceutical companies licensed by the FDA in original packaging. However, Dr. Catizone says because the U.S. can't regulate drugs from other countries, it's hard to know exactly where drugs you buy online come from. “If something sounds too good to be true, it's probably too good to be true for something that's licensed for a site, where you can get information from a state agency or federal government about,” Dr. Catizone explains. Exterminators are finding COVID control’s a growing new business.Businesses are getting more aggressive about keeping space for workers and customers sanitized and safe.Truly Nolen Pest Control realized it already had an effective COVID killer it had been using to clean up after rat infestations.Mark Ringlestetter with Truly Nolen says, “So at that point, we decided to build a program that would be good for sanitizing surfaces.”So Truly Nolen worked out procedures for a program called Truly Sanitized, developed training and pushed out a new product. Other pest control companies have gone into COVID control too.Right now Ringlestetter says Truly’s charging about two hundred dollars an hour.Ringlestetter says, “Let's take a call center for instance, and you go in and it's ready to go and then you know there's somebody there and you're doing desktops and wiping down keyboards and, you know, creating hard surfaces on chairs then it could go relatively quickly we're moving around a lot of things and we're doing a lot of prep work in advance that, then, that certainly would slow it down.”The product does not have a long term germ killing effect but Truly Nolen’s working on a process that will because even if COVID-19 doesn’t last our extra interest in sanitizing probably will.“I would imagine that it's changed everyone's perception of how, how to protect yourself even against things like the common, the common cold or even the flu. JOSHUA TREE, Cali. – Scientists say climate change could kill off California’s iconic Joshua trees completely. “The future for Joshua trees might be a little bleak and we know that,” said University of California Riverside biologist Lynn Sweet, Ph.D. Sweet says these trees, which have been on the planet for more than 2.5 million years, could soon be extinct due to warming weather. Her team of scientists released a new study showing the impacts of climate change on California’s high desert -- saying as the Earth gets hotter and gets less rain, it will be harder for these trees to survive. “Joshua trees need really special conditions in order to germinate and grow,” Sweet said. “And those conditions might happen less and less frequently.” Sweet predicts Joshua trees could be extinct within the next 50 years. “We’re looking at the future of maybe keeping 20 percent of the Joshua trees if we really get our acts together,” she said. “And we’re looking at less than 1 percent of Joshua tree habitat remaining in the park if we don’t do something about climate change.” Some visitors say they are already seeing the change. “The Joshua trees don’t look happy,” tourist Jean Blattner said. “They seem to be in the park area suffering.” Blattner has been visiting Joshua Tree National Park for the past 30 years and says the conditions are getting worse. “They’re not as full; they don’t seem to have the glisten that they used to when the sun shined on them before,” she said. Not everyone, however, everyone is buying it. “Even though it looks a little dry it’s still full of life,” said Nelson Perez, who has lived in Joshua Tree for 20 years. Perez supports science but doesn’t believe that these trees could be completely wiped off the planet by the end of the century. “I don’t think it’s to an extent that a lot of the climate changers beliefs are so I’m kind of in the middle,” he said. Sweet, however, says science supports her findings and encourages people to think about how their carbon footprint impacts the environment. “So, the degree to which the Joshua Tree is in trouble is really up to us,” she said. “If we can make a difference, we can make a difference for these trees.” 2219
