The company that made billions selling the prescription painkiller OxyContin has filed for bankruptcy days after reaching a tentative settlement with many of the state and local governments suing it over the toll of opioids. The filing late Sunday night in White Plains, New York, was anticipated before and after the tentative deal, which could be worth up to billion over time, was struck. But legal battles still lie ahead for Purdue. About half the states have not signed onto the proposal. Several of them plan to object to the settlement in bankruptcy court and to continue litigation in other courts against members of the Sackler family, which owns the company. The bankruptcy means that Purdue will likely be removed from the first federal opioid trial, scheduled to start in Cleveland on Oct. 21. 819

The full search warrant and related materials for Michael Cohen were released Thursday in a court filing in federal court in Manhattan.A redacted version of the document was released in March -- the new filing contains unredacted portions including those related to campaign finance. They were made public after Judge William Pauley ruled that "the campaign finance violations discussed in the Materials are a matter of national importance."Pauley ordered those sections to be unredacted after prosecutors informed the judge that they had "concluded" their investigation into the Trump Organization relating to Cohen's campaign finance violations."The weighty public ramifications of the conduct described in the campaign finance portions warrant disclosure," Pauley said.A number of news organizations, including CNN, had asked to unseal copies of the search warrants and affidavits relating to the April 2018 raids on Cohen's hotel room, home and office. In March, the judge ordered prosecutors to release the search warrants materials but allowed them to keep the sections relating to campaign finance under seal because of an ongoing investigation.Of the nearly 900 pages relating to the search warrants that were released, there were redactions spanning over 20 pages under the heading "illegal campaign contribution scheme." Some of the pages contain duplications.Last year, Cohen pleaded guilty to nine federal charges including tax fraud, lying to Congress and two campaign finance violations for facilitating hush money payments to former Playboy model Karen McDougal and adult film actress Stormy Daniels, two women who alleged affairs with Donald Trump a decade ago. Trump has denied the affairs. When Cohen pleaded guilty, he implicated Trump, saying he facilitated the payments "in coordination with and at the direction of" a presidential candidate. He later identified Trump by name in testimony before Congress. Prosecutors identified the person as "Individual 1" in court filings who they said had "become the President of the United States." Cohen is serving a three-year prison sentence.Trump's name has not been explicitly stated by prosecutors in any court filings related to Cohen's campaign finance case.On Thursday, the entire record will be released with minimal redactions for "limited references" to an uncharged third party, the names of government investigators, and some individuals who discussed business transactions with Cohen. The conclusion of federal prosecutors' investigation of the Trump company's role in the Cohen matter marks a significant victory for the President's family business. An attorney for the company declined to comment.A lawyer for Trump, Jay Sekulow, said: "We are pleased that the investigation surrounding these ridiculous campaign finance allegations is now closed. We have maintained from the outset that the President never engaged in any campaign finance violation."This story is breaking and will be updated. 2980

The body of a missing Texas police chief who fell overboard while on a fishing boat was recovered Sunday morning, the US Coast Guard said.Kemah Police Chief Chris Reed was on the boat with his wife in Galveston Bay on Friday afternoon when it was hit by a wake of a passing vessel. His body was found about 8 a.m. a mile and a half north of the Texas City Dike in Texas City, the Coast Guard said.Reed's wife remained on the boat and was not injured. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time, Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Caren Damon told reporters.Kemah is on Galveston Bay about 40 miles from Houston.Coast Guard crews searched more than 650 square miles over some 40 hours.About 40 vessels, including 15 from the Coast Guard, searched, the Coast Guard said. An aircrew and a team of drones -- along with 12 state, local and federal agencies -- were involved, said Tom Munoz, emergency management coordinator for Texas City."Number one, he's just a great cop, just to start off with. He's been in this county a long time, working for several different agencies," said Texas City Police Chief Joe Stanton before the body was located. "We're a tight-knit group. He's one of ours. And, we're out there and we're gonna find him."In addition to his career as a police officer, Reed was a retired Army paratrooper and was on the Clear Creek Independent School District board, according to CNN affiliate 1407

The global death toll from the coronavirus has now topped 2,000, but that’s little compared to the flu. In the U.S. alone this season the CDC estimates at least 14,000 flu-related deaths. Still, the fear of coronavirus may be spreading faster than the virus itself. Quarantines, lockdowns and daily death toll updates have heightened the fear of the respiratory illness.Much of it stems from the unknown. The exact mortality rate is still a big question says Dr. Emily Landon, an epidemiologist and infectious disease specialist at the University of Chicago Hospital. “If you just have a cold you just stay home, and you never get tested. And so those people don't appear in the totals which make it look like it might be more deadly than it is” she says. Dr. Landon says the virus is causing alarm for several reasons: Everyone is susceptible, there is no vaccine yet and it’s unclear whether antiviral medicines will be effective. “More people that get this new coronavirus, it looks like more of them will die than the same number of people who get the influenza virus,” says Landon. Social media misinformation, like a global air travel map that went viral – incorrectly predicting the spread of the outbreak, have not helped. “Fear has driven the Chinese response to the crisis,” says Phillip Braun, a clinical professor of finance and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. That fear-factor he says is costing global financial markets“For China it is going to be billions for the U.S. it's unclear yet,” explains Braun.Suspended flights, supply chain disruptions and factory and store closures are already hurting major U.S. companies like Wal-Mart, Starbucks and Apple. “Apple's already announced their earnings are going to be reduced because their factories in China are shut down so they're not going to have enough supply of Apple iPhones here in the states,” says Braun.Still, public health officials like Dr. Landon are quick to point out that they are being vigilant about identifying cases, quarantining and in turn isolating the virus so it can’t reproduce.“The only thing that's really going to protect you is if you clean your hands before you touch your face. Period,” she says.Economists and healthcare experts agree that while there is cause for concern so far, there is not yet reason to panic. 2346
