A Florida family is mourning the loss of their puppy Zeus, who died while protecting two of their four children from a venomous snake.Oriley Richardson, 10, was playing in his family's backyard in Webster on September 23 when the 9-month-old pit bull suddenly jumped towards him, his mother Gina Richardson told CNN on Sunday. Oriley noticed the pup attacking something on the ground, but thought it was a rope.It was a coral snake. And Zeus was doing his best to keep it away from Oriley.As the dog struggled to keep the snake at bay, Orion, 11, stepped into the backyard to change Zeus' water.That's when Zeus decided to lay down on the snake, using his body weight to smother the deadly predator and prevent it from harming the boys.Orion noticed that Zeus' eyes looked "bugged out," Richardson said. That's when they turned him over and discovered the snake, which had bitten Zeus four times before he bit off and swallowed its head.The family rushed Zeus to a nearby animal hospital, where staff immediately administered anti-venom.Sadly, it was too late. Zeus died the following day -- the same day as Oriley's birthday."I just started bawling," Richardson said. "My kids woke up and heard me crying and then they too started crying. We were all an emotional wreck."The family, including Sega, Zeus' mom, went to the hospital to say goodbye."Sega goes over to Zeus' head and puts her paws up on the table and takes a sniff," said Richardson. "Her ears came back, she got down, she instantly jumped on the sofa next to me and put her head on my thigh in sorrow. At that moment not only was my family broken, but his own mother was broken."Richardson said she feels "forever grateful" to Zeus and considers him a hero. "I feel like I may have lost one of my children had he not been there," she said.Oriley is especially saddened over Zeus' death. "He was a good boy and I loved him with all my heart," he said. "I played with him all the time. Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Nancy Messonnier believe a spread of misinformation among those pockets of people against vaccinating is the culprit. A common argument from anti-vaxx groups is that the vaccine can cause brain swelling in children. The two health officials clarified that in rare instances with underlying immune deficiencies, an MMR vaccine is not recommended. Dr. Messonnier says a doctor would be able to determine if a child fell into that category. Amid the national debate, a Texas state representative is now pushing for legislation that would allow more parents to opt out of vaccines, arguing to the Texas Observer that if a child gets measles, parents could simply use "antibiotics and that kind of stuff" to prevent deaths. Virtual reality could soon play a role in helping during childbirth. Some women are watching relaxing scenery and listening to soothing sounds during labor with VR goggles. It’s part of the research being done at Cedars-Sinai, a medical center in Los Angeles. The research is being done to see if VR can help ease pain as labor gets more intense. “What we did find was that women found it very helpful,” says Dr. Melissa Wong, who specializes in OB/GYN and maternal fetal medicine at Cedars-Sinai. “That women were describing it … one of my favorite descriptions of it was a woman (who) spoke about it as being like a virtual doula." That's some of the early feedback from women who took part in the study.Wong says there were some women who found the headset isolating because you can’t see others. But she thinks VR could be useful, whether someone is using pain medication or not. “I think it has the potential for the woman who wants to defer her epidural,” Wong says. “And then the other thing is, there are women who also don’t get complete relief from an epidural or who still feel significant anxiety even after an epidural.”The full results of the study will include the pain management scores and will be released in February 2020. 1255

A 73-year-old hiker was rescued Saturday after spending seven days in the wilderness, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Edmo Luna said.Eugene Jo went missing June 22 after becoming separated from a hiking group near Mount Waterman in the San Gabriel Mountains of the Angeles National Forest, according to a Twitter post from the Montrose Search and Rescue Team.Jo was discovered Saturday morning around 11 a.m. Pacific time, according to the search and rescue team. Luna said the man was found "down a ravine in the Devil's Canyon area, quite a few miles away from the trail of the original hike."He had not eaten in at least five days and was drinking water out of Devils Canyon Creek, the search team's post said.The hiker suffered no traumatic injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital for further evaluation, according to Luna.
