DALLAS — Southwest Airlines is moving closer to the first furloughs in the airline's nearly 50-year history. The airline warned nearly 7,000 employees this week that they could lose their jobs unless labor unions accept concessions to help Southwest cope with a sharp drop in travel during the pandemic. That's roughly 12% of the airline's staff.The jobs impacted include customer service agents, ramp agents, operations agents, provisioning agents and freight agents nationwide. Last month, Southwest warned another 400 mechanics could be furloughed. Southwest is seeking pay cuts of around 10% in exchange for no furloughs through 2021. In WARN letters required by law of the possible involuntary furloughs, Southwest says they were able to operate without any employee pay cuts, layoffs or furloughs this year because of the Payroll Support Program in the CARES Act from Congress. Once the protections and funding expired on September 30, the airline says they implemented voluntary separation opportunities, "with approximately 25 percent of Employees taking voluntary options," the airline writes. The airline’s top labor-relations official says negotiations with unions have stalled. Unions say they have proposed cost-cutting measures to Southwest, but management has rejected them and refuses to consider any more voluntary buyouts to reduce the workforce. 1372

Deputies in Indian River County, Florida were on alligator patrol Friday.The sheriff's office received a call about an alligator on the loose at a local Target. Deputies Bobby Gage and Victoria Pianelli were called to the scene to inspect the situation. Pictures on the the sheriff's office Facebook page show the deputies calmly holding the little reptile.They later returned the alligator to a retention pond behind the store. 456

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — There's something of a spectacle along the beach in Del Mar these days: A bulldozer that's helping to preserve the city's main attraction.The heavy equipment is taking wet sand from the water line up to the public entrance areas, where it will protect access points to the beach. On Wednesday, the work was being done near the 23rd Street entrance. On Tuesday, it was closer to homes near 29th Street. "Without a beach in Del Mar, we're not Del Mar," said Councilman Dwight Worden. Worden says the bulldozer can only do so much. In the bigger picture, the city is negotiating with the California Coastal Commission on how it can combat rising sea levels. Worden noted that scientists have predicted the sea level to rise by six feet by the year 2100. "If it rises, it's going to erode the beaches, if it floods more from climate change, we'll have more flood water coming down and putting them at risk, so it's a combination," he said.Worden says the city has a plan to preserve its beaches through at least 2050 largely through a sand replenishment program, which the commission has not approved. He said Del Mar has put a controversial plan called "Managed Retreat" off the table. Managed Retreat could entail removing the multi-million dollar homes that line the shore to allow the beach to expand inland. The Coastal Commission has given the city 25 suggestions on its plan. Worden, however, said some of those suggestions appear to be nudging the city toward practices that could be like Managed Retreat. "If you look at the 25 changes, they're kind of gumming around that back and through the kitchen door," he said. The two agencies will next meet in February. We just got a notification today about a Black-owned business in Ireland,” said Mariam Kazadi, the co-founder of the BBLK app.The app uses GPS to find Black-owned businesses near you. Or you can search through businesses that allow you to order online. It is organized by the type of service.As communities push for racial justice, there has been growing momentum to support Black-owned businesses. Yelp saw searches for “Black-owned business” spike 6,000% between June and August.Companies rarely identify themselves through Google searches as being minority-owned, which can make it difficult for consumers to find them.“Black-owned businesses not only don’t get visibility, but they don’t get funding. So, we want to put the Black dollar back into the community so those economies and communities can grow,” Kazadi said.The BBLK app is free for users and businesses.
