In an episode of his widely popular podcast that was released on Thursday, Joe Rogan repeated the debunked claim that left-wing provocateurs had been arrested for setting wildfires in Oregon.Last week, rumors began spreading on social media that left-wing activists, anti-fascists and members of the right-wing group The Proud Boys were responsible for setting at least some of the wildfires that are currently ravaging the state.The online rumors prompted social media posts from several local law enforcement agencies in which they debunked the rumors and asked local residents to refrain from spreading disinformation. The Douglas County Sheriff's Department even said that rumors of antifa-sparked wildfires caused their emergency disptach system to become overrun.Even the FBI debunked the rumors in a press release on Sept. 11."FBI Portland and local law enforcement agencies have been receiving reports that extremists are responsible for setting wildfires in Oregon. With our state and local partners, the FBI has investigated several such reports and found them to be untrue," the FBI's statement read.But in an episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience" released Thursday, the podcast host repeated the debunked claim to millions of listeners."I actually love Portland, it's one of my favorite places to perform. Most of the people there are very nice. But there's a madness going on there — you want to talk about madness in crowds. That exemplifies that right now," Rogan said."They've arrested people for lighting forest fires up there. They've arrested left-wing people for lighting these forest fires," Rogan added. "You know, air quote 'activists.' This is also something not widely being reported that people have been arrested for lighting fires up there." 1777

If you can't beat Amazon, partner with it.Kohl's is doing another deal with Jeff Bezos. The department store chain said Tuesday that 82 stores in the Chicago and Los Angeles areas will soon accept return items from Amazon. Kohl's will pack and ship the merchandise back to the online retailing giant for free.Earlier this month, Kohl's announced a plan to sell the Alexa-enabled Echo home speaker, Fire TV, tablets and other Amazon-branded devices in 10 of its stores.The latest partnership between Kohl's and Amazon comes as traditional retailers try (and often fail) to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape. Toys 'R' Us filed for bankruptcy protection late Monday.Toys 'R' Us has been hurt by Amazon, as well as Walmart and Target. But other retailers are following the lead of Kohl's and have decided to work more closely with Amazon to boost sales.Sears, which also owns Kmart, has been one of the worst-performing retailers of the past decade. In areas north of town, like the hard-hit Kingwood neighborhood, tall piles of debris--furniture, cabinetry, bedding--only just recently starting to get hauled away.  And there's no escaping the smell. The Red Cross continues to make daily deliveries to the hardest hit areas. Driving a Budget rental truck tattooed with a temporary Red Cross logo through the Kashmere Gardens neighborhood, volunteers hand off two cases of water to 26-year-old Joel Salazar.He takes it inside his empty apartment--a converted garage owned by his aunt-- where he's lost just about everything he owned. They didn't have insurance. But then again, they didn't expect it to get as bad as it did."The water [from the creek occasionally] gets high over here, but it's never high enough to go into a house. And everybody kept saying, it's not going to be that bad," Salazar said, adding, "I'll be fine."Now, he's relying on the kindness of others to get by--a mattress donated by friends, a t-shirt given to him by a local graphic printing company, and a place to sleep courtesy of his Uncle Hector, whose carpentry skills will come in handy soon. The smell has finally started to fade inside Salazar's place, and they can begin renovations.But there's something else that's made Harvey--and losing his apartment-- that much tougher for Salazar."When I came in here, I just started crying, like I was hurt. This is my house, the place I shared with my mom."Salazar shared the cozy one bedroom with his mother up until her death just over a year ago. She had Leukemia, and for a while it had appeared she'd beaten it, thanks to Salazar; he was the bone marrow donor."And then the cancer came back."She died soon after."I mean, I never really lived on my own until this past past year. It was difficult the first couple of months, and it still is."It was so hard in fact that Salazar had to put most of what reminded him of her--family photographs on the walls and tables--and hide them on the top shelf of his closet. "There was just a lot of memories there, and I just felt depressed every time I saw them."But heading home to take stock in what stayed dry, Salazar takes down the boxes of photos--some of his mother's most cherished possessions, now his, too. Harvey, he says, is his turning point. He's quick to stress that he'll always be thinking about her, but no longer will he feel the need to dwell on his mother's death."This flood is actually--it's kind of a good thing because, you know, I can rebuild and make the apartment my place and my home," he said, welling up with emotion. "It's going to give me a chance to move forward and be able to come home and relax, instead of always thinking about my mom."And you can bet that after Salazar decides which photos to display on his walls once more, the boxes with the others will go back up onto the tallest shelf he can find."They're safe with me." 2944

In a fleeting moment, life can change dramatically. Two summers ago, Fred Quin was celebrating the 4th of July at his family’s lake cottage near Grand Rapids, Michigan. They loaded up the boat and headed to the sand bar.“I decided to go off the front of the boat, and that’s when it gets fuzzy,” Quin siad.Quin's girlfriend, Meghan Anderson, noticed Fred was acting strangely. She walked over to him and grabbed his shoulder.  He didn’t move.The group grabbed a raft, put it under Fred, called 911 and floated him to shore.  They were met by an ambulance.Within four hours, Fred was in surgery.  He'd shattered his C-6 vertebrae, causing his body to become motionless. "The surgery was to remove those pieces, put a donor bone in, put a plate in the front side, and on the back side put two rods going down my spine. And they fused my C-5 to C-7 vertebras," Quin said.The trauma doctor told Fred he would never walk again, and he would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.“It was devastating,” Anderson said.Quin wasn't giving up on his hope to walk someday, so he spent every day in therapy. With Anderson always by his side and after months of rehab, there was a sign of progress. Eventually, he began to regain feeling in his leg.“My first moment was my big toe on my left foot,” Quin said.Quin moved back home and started intense workouts at Detroit Medical Center's Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM).“Fred’s determination is what makes you make it enjoyable to come to work,” RIM Physical Therapist Kyle Weishaupt said.They have been putting Fred in a wearable motorized machine that helps increase strength and endurance during workouts.“With the robot, the Exoskeleton, and me, we can get him up, and we can do over 1,000 steps in one session,” Weishaupt said.As the steps progressed, so did Quin and Anderson’s relationship. On their eight-year dating anniversary, they returned to the water for a pontoon ride, and Quin proposed.“The next goal is to walk down the aisle with Meghan with just with one crutch,” he said.On May 12, Meghan became Fred’s bride, and he accomplished his biggest goal.He walked down the aisle on his wedding day — fulfilling his dream and sharing his special day with family and friends. “Whether it’s exactly how we wanted it to happen or not, that’s not what matters. It's that we’re doing it together, and we’re happy," Meghan Quin said. After the honeymoon, the Quins plan on getting back to their life and setting new goals for their future. His next big challenge is to master walking in the grocery store.  2673

In a security policy that has been implemented in many stadiums and arenas around the country, large bags will soon be banned inside Cinemark's movie theaters, the company has announced. The ban will go into effect on Thursday at all of its theaters. Cinemark is the parent company of chains such as Rave Motion Pictures, Century Theatres, CineArts and Tinseltown. Bags larger than 12 inches by 12 inches by 6 inches will not be permitted. Exceptions may be made for medical equipment and diaper bags. Cinemark said there will not be anywhere to check bags. The chain also said that the company reserves the right to inspect all bags entering its theaters. A Century Theatre, which is owned by Cinemark, was the scene of a mass shooting in July 2012, when 12 were killed and 58 were wounded by a gunman. Survivors and families of the victims sued Cinemark claiming the company did not take adequate safety and security precaution. A US federal judge then threw out most of the claims against Cinemark in 2013.  1078
