(KGTV) – A growing number of locals who trying to make it in San Diego are flying out of the Tijuana International Airport to save money on airline tickets.In only its third year of service, San Diego's Cross Border Xpress, or “CBX”, is soaring in sales. “You can save so much money by traveling out of CBX,” said Luis Palacios, CBX's Chief Commercial Officer. The pedestrian bridge in Otay Mesa goes over the border and into the Tijuana airport. It’s located about 20 minutes south of downtown San Diego. San Diegan Arun Srinivasan uses CBX to fly to business meetings in Mexico. “It’s essentially like having a second airport in San Diego that just costs less,” Srinivasan said. “Every roundtrip flight, I've saved three to four hundred dollars.” RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Local cities among top in the U.S. for staycations Srinivasan said CBX also saves him time. “[Departing from] San Diego, I have to connect through LAX or San Francisco." From the Tijuana airport, there are 35 nonstop flights throughout Mexico and two to China. Security is a concern for some travelers. A 2019 report ranked Tijuana as the most dangerous city in the world. Palacios said CBX puts safety first. “It’s totally secure. PENSACOLA, Fla. — Rivers swollen by Hurricane Sally's rains could mean more problems for parts of south Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Sally has diminished to a tropical depression. But it's still a rainmaker as it has moved Thursday into Georgia, on a path to the Carolinas. At least one person was killed on Wednesday in Alabama and one other person was reported missing. Hundreds of people were rescued on Wednesday by first responders. The storm flipped boats and cars and even caused significant damage to a bridge outside of Pensacola, Florida.Authorities warned that rain from the storm could swell eight waterways in Florida and Alabama to record levels. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned residents and visitors of possible river flooding in the coming days. The National Weather Service says the small city of Brewton, Alabama, can expect moderate to major flooding. 886

Part of the cure for COVID-19 might be found in sharks dwelling deep in our oceans.“Everybody’s, ‘oh, there’s a hundred million being taken anyway, why are you worried about vaccine?’” said Stefanie Brendl of Shark Allies, a nonprofit for shark conservation.She says during the pandemic, more sharks are being harvested for squalene, an oil found in their livers and is often used to increase the effectiveness of vaccines.“The more products we come up with that require shark parts, the more we’re fueling this 100,000,000 sharks a year number,” she said.Brendl says many pharmaceutical companies are using shark squalene to produce a coronavirus vaccine and that if everyone in the world received two doses, 500,000 sharks would have to be slaughtered to meet the demand.“We need to look at this and we need to hold the vaccine companies accountable to test alternatives,” she said.One of the companies, Brendl, is calling out pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, which plans on manufacturing 1 billion doses of a “pandemic vaccine” in 2021.While GSK says squalene pulled from shark livers is used in some of its vaccines, the company claims it’s also exploring squalene found in some plants.“One research team has tried to make in yeast so you could grow cultures of yeasts similar to fermenting beer,” said David Kroll, Ph.D., a professor of pharmacology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus.He says finding a cure for coronavirus will be the biggest vaccine undertaking in recent medical history.“The biggest concern is whether more sharks are going to have to be killed for this monumental global effort,” Kroll said.Shark experts believe this is a global challenge.“Many of the sharks that are being targeted are deep sea sharks and they’re found in open ocean environments that may not be protected,” said Chris Lowe, a professor of marine biology and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach.He says tens of millions of sharks are already killed each year and some companies poach shark corpses for squalene to make numerous products ranging from vaccines to cosmetics.Lowe warns an increase in killings could impact our ecosystem.“Those animals play a very important role that could affect people on land,” he said.While the cost of a cure for COVID-19 is still unknown, Lowe says killing more sharks could mean extinction for several shark species. 2414

Police have issued an Amber Alert after a 13-year-old girl was abducted outside her home in Lumberton, North Carolina, Monday morning.Hania Noelia Aguilar was at the Rosewood Mobile Home Park waiting for the rest of her family to come outside and drive to school when she was forced into a car just before 7 a.m. ET, the FBI and Lumberton Police Department say."A witness saw a male subject dressed in all black and wearing a yellow bandana force Hania into a relative's vehicle that was parked in the driveway," the FBI said in a statement."Hania is a Hispanic female, 5 feet tall, weighing approximately 126 pounds. She has black hair, and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue shirt with flowers and blue jeans," it said."Hania's mother asks whoever took her daughter to please bring her back home," the Lumberton Police Department said in a release posted to Facebook.It said Hania was driven away in a green, 2002 Ford Expedition with South Carolina license plate NWS-984. The hood of the car is peeling and there is a Clemson sticker on the rear window.Police, the Robeson County Sheriff's Office, FBI agents and agents with the State Bureau of Investigation are following nearly 50 leads, the release said.CNN affiliate WRAL reported that Hania was an eighth grader at Lumberton Junior High School.It quoted her sister Heylin Perez as saying Hania had gone outside to start the family's car despite her aunt telling her not to."She just got the keys and started to turn it on," Perez said. Parents are approaching back-to-school as best they can, whether their kids are learning at home or face-to-face in the classroom. Many are also relying on after-school programs to help keep their kids mentally and academically successful."The reality is that because most of our schools are virtual or hybrid, after school is all the time and so our programs have been on overdrive to try and meet the need of all of our working parents. And whether you’re working from home or you have to go into work, it’s really hard to do that when you have kids that are home," said Jodi Grant, the Executive Director of the Afterschool Alliance.Grant says after-school programs during the pandemic are essential. The national organization works with 27,000 programs across the country that are not only providing meals to children, but also virtual classroom spaces and childcare for working parents."I think we need to stop and put the kids first. And there’s a lot of creative ways that our kids can be learning, and they don't need to be isolated. After-school programs have jumped to do that and jumped through hoops to do that," said Grant.YMCA of the USA has slowly been reopening some programs since the spring, including a number of day camps this summer. As the fall approached, organizers realized they needed to expand after-school programs."We saw the need in the community to pivot to an all-day childcare model, where the children can now come to the Y, they’ll be separated into different pods and staff as they go through their virtual learning programs via their schools," said Ryan O'Malley with YMCA of the USA.O'Malley says there are more than 370 YMCA locations providing full-day childcare and virtual learning classrooms in 45 states across the country. Boys and Girls Clubs of America has 4,700 locations in the U.S. and right now more than 83% of them are providing some level of service."I think it's critical for both the physical safety but also the emotional safety for those young people and being able to provide those services," said Misty Miller, Senior Vice President for Organizational Development, Field Operations for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.Miller says a majority of their Boys and Girls Clubs have opened in some capacity."With many of our schools being virtual, we have about 1,300 sites that are opening for the full day to be these virtual learning hubs or safety zones, if you will, which is a different place for us. And it's a very expensive place for us. Clubs are increasing their operating costs," said Miller. Boys and Girls Clubs reports it’s spending at least three times as much as it normally does on after-school care to accommodate safety protocols for COVID-19. YMCA of the USA says they've lost more than billion in revenue since the spring and that after-school programs are suffering financially right now."Very much so. I think it's a combination of things. One is that the programs that are operating its much more expensive to do. In many cases they have to rent additional space, they have to hire more staff, it's longer hours. We are pushing very hard in the next COVID bill to get some federal resources into after-school [programs] so that we can do this one-time short-term influx of money," said O'Malley.Some after-school programs are even helping families cover the costs of childcare, since many parents are finding it hard economically right now to pay the fees."We are looking to the communities for that support but we’re also looking to the federal government for that support. Ys are facing financial hardship that only the federal government can provide, so we’re really asking Congress to give back and look for that relief for charities that are so important to keep non-profits open like the Y open," said O'Malley. 3810
